A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Good Hello!
  8:32pm MissRikki:

Greetings
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Austin Rich:

I love it! The "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" band is getting back together.

Tuna free, I see.
  8:47pm MissRikki:

Gotta save the dolphins, I suppose
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Mr Fab:

What's goin on here? Wolves? Dolphins? Mutants?
Avatar 9:02pm HyperDose:

Here we go 🤠
  🎸 9:02pm Geoff-U:

Good eve
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Austin Rich:

We used to do this show at KPSU in Portland many years ago... and this show is some of our best on-air moments. I'm providing the turntables and other samples, and Miss Rikki provided "word salad" from a variety of sources, including the computer and CD players.
  🎸 9:04pm Geoff-U:

The Tuesday Rock Block: this show from 6-8 and then KBOO's The Melting Pot from 8-10pm
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Austin Rich:

Good Hello, Mr. Fab and Geoff-U!
Avatar 🎸 9:04pm Mr. X:

Word salad is nutritious.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Austin Rich:

Miss Rikki: any insight into your audio input?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Austin Rich:

Mr. X! Good to see you!
  9:05pm Miss Rikki:

Piled on for maximum consumption
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Will the Sound Guy:

Hi Austin Rich and all!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Austin Rich:

I'll have to check out the Melting Pot. I'm not familiar.

Will! Good to see you!
  9:06pm Miss Rikki:

I generally chose bits of quotes from throughout pop culture that fit the subliminal messages required for that show
  9:07pm Miss Rikki:

Some of us forget the greatest speeches never aired
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Austin Rich:

For some reason, at PSU, I got a certain amount of free design work from the Design Department. So we commissioned the "logo" for "A Momentary Lapse of Reason: A Radio Almanac" from them.
  9:07pm andrewBunny:

Good Hello, dear friends
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Austin Rich:

If anyone can identify these clips, I'll update the playlist later.

Good Hello, AndrewBunny!
Avatar 9:08pm postconsumer:

loving this!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Austin Rich:

Additionally, my friend Paco Jones - who has composed a number of theme songs for me - did the theme song for our show, and I even paid him for it! I used it every show, except maybe the first couple? Paco does great work.
  9:09pm andrewBunny:

Robert Redford's Wolf Record?
Avatar 9:09pm postconsumer:

live, improvised sound collage?
  9:09pm Miss Rikki:

Paco is brilliant
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Austin Rich:

That's from my collection! The redford / wolves record. Great for samples.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Austin Rich:

I think it's in the playlist?
  9:10pm Miss Rikki:

It is
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Austin Rich:

I know I had found this Miles & Monk album at a thrift store in rural WA just before this show, and brought it in to see if it would play all the way through. it did!
  9:11pm andrewBunny:

I found a copy @RPM Records here in Traverse City in the free bin (IIRC)!
  9:12pm andrewBunny:

<scrolls up and looks at playlist> Ooops!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Krys O.:

Gotta get some sleep. Have a great reunion!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Austin Rich:

We had two turntables, we had five CD players, we had a computer, an auxiliary cord that was often for my iPod, and a few other things... phone, six mics, etc...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Austin Rich:

Thanks Krys O!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Austin Rich:

We had bands on a few times. We would play albums we didn't know and review them on the air, while the song was playing. This is only a small slice of our shenanigans.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Krys O.:

Ah, looks like NVM gets a guitar too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Mr Fab:

that sounded like Zappa
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Austin Rich:

It was often controlled chaos.
Avatar 9:13pm postconsumer:

nice. my show used to have a second hour, where we would do a live improv thing. controlled chaos, definitely!
Avatar 🎸 9:14pm Mr. X:

Typical predator: I am doing you a favor by eating you. Your herd will grow stronger."
Prey: "Yeah. Thanks a lot. If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't need to be stronger!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Mr Fab:

haha Mr. X.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Austin Rich:

I worked for the school that was attached to the radio station at the time. Since I had alluni status, I could have a show. So I would get off work, go to the nearest bar, prep for the show, then meet up with Rikki. We'd compare notes, and then we'd be on the air.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Austin Rich:

In the morning, before work, I would pick out a bunch of records and CDs, and email out the "theme" for the show. Then we'd veer WAY off theme, most of the time.
Avatar 🎸 9:17pm Mr. X:

I'm a few minutes lagged, due to crappy Cottage Grove cable connection. My comments will all come too late, so bear with me.
  9:17pm Miss Rikki:

For me, it was usually after a 12-hour work day, and hoping the ol' brain meats still spit something out
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Austin Rich:

Meh. We're all sort of in our "own time." That's very AMLOR.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Austin Rich:

We both worked too much. This was sort of a "Brain Dump" in a a lot of ways.
  9:18pm andrewBunny:

WTUL back in New Orleans had a great show in the 70s when I was just getting into music called Bizzare Radio. They'd play birdsong records, sound fx tracks, things like Discreet Music all at the same time. It was my fave radio show.
  9:18pm Miss Rikki:

Brain dump works
  🎸 9:24pm Ellen Lovebug:

I'm here! I'm going to scroll up through the chat and see what I've missed, wow, that's a lot of chat!
Avatar 9:24pm postconsumer:

KFAI in Minneapolis had a show, also, called Technological Retreat: archive.org...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Austin Rich:

Good Hello, Ellen! Always good to see you in the chat!
  9:27pm andrewBunny:

thx, pc. just bookmarked that; i'll have to check it out!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Austin Rich:

Hmmmm. I need to check out that link, postconsumer...
Avatar 9:28pm postconsumer:

Really enjoying the mix, Austin Rich. What year were you doing this again?
  🎸 9:29pm Ellen Lovebug:

I loved doing college radio. I was on a talk show called Access. I was the resident "TAB" temporarily able-bodied person. The rest of the crew all had prominent disabilities. Our sound person was blind. One of our talk show hosts was deaf with a Cochlear implant. One had cerebral palsy. One was blind. We did a bunch of normalizing of student life with disabilities, talked about accommodations, and had different theme topics each week. We caught a lot of attention with our week on sexuality awareness and rights involving disabled students
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Austin Rich:

2014.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Austin Rich:

That's so cool, Ellen! Any recordings?
Avatar 🎸 9:30pm Mr. X:

My family used to watch Laugh-In every week. Flip Wilson was on it a lot. So I kind of grew up with Flip Wilson.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Austin Rich:

Rikki and I would just look at each other, and gesture, "I've got something," and then the other would fade down. Then we'd just watch for when someone pressed "stop," and we'd start the next sample, whoever had something cued up.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Austin Rich:

I've a sucker for Flip. I think both Rikki and I bonded over Flip Wilson clips.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Austin Rich:

Occasionally, I would go out into the lobby of the radio station, and grab whoever was there, ask them to go into the studio and speak on a random subject, and then turn on the mics. Then Rikki would mix music behind it.

We had a lot of fun gimmicks. Like I said: this is just a slice.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Austin Rich:

I made it a rule that nearly all the records I used for mixing were thrift scores.
  9:33pm Miss Rikki:

Flip Wilson forever!
  9:34pm Miss Rikki:

The records from my half were thrift finds and from my mother's collection of oddball audio delights.
  🎸 9:34pm Ellen Lovebug:

@Austin I used to have 2 cassettes, but I don't know where they are, possibly somewhere in storage. They used to be at my parents' house for safekeeping
Avatar 9:35pm postconsumer:

craziest setup we ever had: a dj was spinning in the live studio. we could hear him, but he couldn't hear us. our accompaniment was: 2 minidisc players, 2 turntables and a sampler. this mix was sent down to the on-air booth, where the on-air dj was also adding to the collage! those were the days...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Austin Rich:

Keep your eyes peels, Ellen! Those tapes are a cool artifact.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Austin Rich:

Yeah, I miss having access to a full studio. But I do alright in the Lava Lamp Lounge.
  9:36pm Miss Rikki:

The Dr. Frank connection
Avatar 🎸 9:36pm Mr. X:

LOL Checkers
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Austin Rich:

Oh yeah, we bonded over Dr. Frank early, too!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Austin Rich:

That interview with Dr. Frank was still one of the coolest things that just fell in my lap. That and the Exene interview.
  9:39pm Miss Rikki:

Agreed. Also Ashtray. I'm probably biased there.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Austin Rich:

That Ashtray in-studio was super-popular on my page for a long time.
  9:40pm Miss Rikki:

It may have been their only radio appearance
  🎸 9:41pm Geoff-U:

Do you splice all this together live with a sampler? It's amazing
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Austin Rich:

No sampler. Just turntables, a computer playing samples from the internet, cd players playing stuff live.
  🎸 9:42pm Geoff-U:

Excellent.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Austin Rich:

I'm riding the turntables buttons on one side. playing music with the other.
Avatar 🎸 9:42pm Mr. X:

Another Laugh-In star, Lily Tomlin.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Austin Rich:

(Mr. X is starting to get the secret theme, Rikki.)
  🎸 9:42pm Ellen Lovebug:

My earliest memory of Lily Tomlin is the movie 9 to 5
  9:42pm andrewBunny:

Looking at the Dear Friends Firesign record: I'm guessing you also have the Duke of Madness Motors book/dvd collection from Seeland?
  9:43pm Miss Rikki:

(We're busted}
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Austin Rich:

Need to get that DVD / book set. It's been on my mind for a bit.
Avatar 🎸 9:43pm Mr. X:

Nixon was on Laugh-In too. Oh sorry, spoiler alert.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Austin Rich:

I used to make it a point to put "Laugh-In" references in all my 'zines back in the day.
  🎸 9:43pm Geoff-U:

Probably olde news but freesound.org has *lots* of fun free sample digging
  🎸 9:44pm Ellen Lovebug:

You bet your sweet bippy
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Austin Rich:

Oh yeah! Freesound makes an appearance on my show almost every week.
Avatar 🎸 9:44pm Mr. X:

@Ellen LOL
  9:45pm Miss Rikki:

I may have secret field recordings on freesound
  🎸 9:45pm Geoff-U:

Oooh! Miss Rikki do tell
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Austin Rich:

Gotta love the Sacco & Vanzeti jokes...
  🎸 9:47pm Geoff-U:

I found samples of Japanese school kids doing exercise chants... quite awesome when looped
  9:47pm Miss Rikki:

Some of my water heater that sounded like a percolator. Sounds of the All Souls Procession in Tucson.... things like that. Do they purge files?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Austin Rich:

I laugh at this bit every time I hear it.
  9:54pm Miss Rikki:

The loop back for this piece is that the voice you hear is currently working on The Archies comics
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Austin Rich:

"I Care About Them Exactly As Much As You Do" is a line I think about all the time.
  9:55pm Miss Rikki:

Also, the record came from my mom
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Austin Rich:

The Wayne Mason Trio record, I assume?
Avatar 9:55pm postconsumer:

Have to head out - enjoyed the show!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Austin Rich:

Thanks postconsumer!
  9:56pm Miss Rikki:

That's the one.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Austin Rich:

Hopefully we don't have any misophonic members of the audience. There is a short clip coming up that involves some mouth sounds in the next hour.
  10:01pm Miss Rikki:

HAHAHAHHAHAH. Oh, the Great Cilantro Debate. Is Dave From Tucson here?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Austin Rich:

I wish. That would be great to get him in the chat. There's some other waiting room references in this two hours, for sure.
Avatar 🎸 10:03pm Mr. X:

The encapsulation of an Age I never meant to live through... Nice work, Austin and Rikki.
  10:03pm Miss Rikki:

I have at least half a show worth of TWR material sitting in a can. We should probably finish at least that episode
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Austin Rich:

Ha! That would be funny, seven years later.
  10:04pm Miss Rikki:

Thank you Mr. X
  10:04pm Miss Rikki:

The waiters are never timely. That's why we love them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Mr Fab:

“ misophonic”?
  🎸 10:20pm Geoff-U:

As long as it's not a clip of my coworker crunching through an entire kale salad in a quiet meeting room I should be fine (this happened)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Austin Rich:

Sound sensitivity, to mouth sounds, often.
  🎸 10:21pm Geoff-U:

I have misophonia and it was so validating to find out it was a real thing... I though I was just a sensitive weirdo
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Austin Rich:

And that's the end of that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Mr Fab:

I hate the Eagles. Does that count?
  10:22pm andrewBunny:

Thankfully, I -like- cilantro.
  10:23pm Miss Rikki:

Eagles-haters are a majority
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Austin Rich:

Mr. Fab: sort of? We seem to all hate the Eagles here at Sheena's.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Austin Rich:

I'm pro-cilantro.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Austin Rich:

Ha ha! We never found that other time... until now!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Austin Rich:

The Professor does not make an appearance in this show, but The Professor was often a guest / other factor to reason with on this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Mr Fab:

Thx for the freesound.org tip. I’m always looking for wacky audio to add to the Sheena’s stream.
  10:25pm Miss Rikki:

The Professor was sent to his room due to Felix Unger issues
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Austin Rich:

Oh, yeah! Freesound is the best! So much great material.
  10:26pm Miss Rikki:

Freesound is a rabbit hole of infinity.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Austin Rich:

"The Professor's Wife" was also a guest / sometimes character. I think DJ Victrola make an appearance, once. Tunacan Jones, who still does radio online somewhere, was also a recurring character.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Austin Rich:

We had an "open phone." Any time the phone rang, we just answered it on the air.
  10:27pm Miss Rikki:

Missus The Professors Wife
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Austin Rich:

Usually the phone thing never backfired too badly.
  10:28pm Miss Rikki:

Unless it was Tuna from the bathroom upstairs. Those calls could go either way.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Austin Rich:

I want a Heart on my profile, Mr. Fab! I'm gonna make a donation soon.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Austin Rich:

The pre-planned Tuna calls could go... sideways... in a fun way.

Then there was the episode where he took over and locked us out of the studio.
  10:29pm Miss Rikki:

Yep.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Austin Rich:

The Canadian punk band "PUP" showed up at KPSU one day, and no one showed up to host them. (The DJ flaked.) So we had them on the show, just because they were there.
Avatar 🎸 10:31pm Mr. X:

Googling Tunacan Jones and his TopDollar Hour, not finding anything after 2018, Last I heard he was in Spokane.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Austin Rich:

Four Dimensional Nightmare, who has played on my show since I joined Sheena's, played on our show, and we have lovely, two-camera video of him performing. Just need to edit it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Austin Rich:

He's on: tpgradio.com, under the name "David Camp" now.
  10:33pm Miss Rikki:

Clearly a fake name
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Austin Rich:

Still the Top Dollar Hour. He was a frequent collaborator of Ricardo Wang / What's This Called?
  🎸 10:46pm Geoff-U:

Where / what station was MLOR on?
  10:46pm Miss Rikki:

It was on KPSU
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Austin Rich:

They didn't have the biggest range, but it was a utility that students and alluni could access.

In Portland

Tunacan had this idea entirely, and prompted me for the questions to ask. We improved the rest of it.
  10:48pm Miss Rikki:

I was not included on the decision, as I recall.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Austin Rich:

But you jumped in flawlessly, which I appreciated. You were very good at that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Austin Rich:

There need to be more Kids In The Hall references.
  10:49pm Miss Rikki:

I spoke Tunacan thankfully
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Austin Rich:

I should have reversed that number! Don't call it! That's another station!
  10:50pm Miss Rikki:

Or do and record the results.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Austin Rich:

I thought I cut that out. I forgot about that entirely on the re-listen.
  10:52pm Miss Rikki:

We just won't speak of it again. What number?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Austin Rich:

Precisely.
Avatar 10:55pm Cp304:

all that jazz
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Austin Rich:

Yeah! Well said, Cp304.
  10:56pm Miss Rikki:

Still not Zappa either.
Avatar 10:58pm Cp304:

Good Luck! I'm finally sipping on some bourbon.

I always get my astrophysics and philosophy from Pan Am, and my natural history from Reobert Redford.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Austin Rich:

It's the only way to learn. We were in college, after all.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Austin Rich:

I lied. I realize that this Parker album came from a co-worker, and not a thrift store. But most of the rest of the albums I brought were from thrift stores.
  🎸 11:01pm Geoff-U:

Thanks for another fun show!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Austin Rich:

Thanks for listening, Geoff!
  11:03pm Miss Rikki:

Katherine Hepburn dude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Mr Fab:

Thanks for all the cilantro!

Whoops!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Austin Rich:

I get a lot of things wrong.

Too many Hepburns

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Austin Rich:

Now, I'M that...
  🎸 11:04pm Ellen Lovebug:

It was fun that you played the Redford wolf album, right while I was discussing a scene in a werewolf novel with an author
Avatar 🎸 11:08pm Mr. X:

Great show! Thanks!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Austin Rich:

I love that Redford album, Ellen. It kind of soothing to listen to, for me.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Austin Rich:

I wish there was a bigger click when you hung up on people. That's my only complaint about KPSU.
  🎸 11:13pm Ellen Lovebug:

I agree
  11:13pm Miss Rikki:

Nothing sounds like a rotary slam.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Austin Rich:

I wanna thank Miss Rikki again. We've got about 5 minutes of stuff left. You were a great co-host, we did one of my favorite shows together, and I hope we do more, soon!
  11:15pm Miss Rikki:

A few years after this, Arbys approached the author of BadSandwichChronicles at his day job with a puppy and two bags of roast beef sandwiches.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Austin Rich:

Whoah! That's hilarious!
  11:16pm Miss Rikki:

If you dig deep enough, you'll find the post where he tells the tale. There were Arbys Twatter posts about it at the time as well.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Austin Rich:

Jeffrey Lee Pierce is so good in interviews.
  11:17pm Miss Rikki:

He was a true legend.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Austin Rich:

This is my favorite Dead Milkmen song. I knew a girl in Eugene - Honey Vizer - who used to do a heartbreaking version of this song.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Austin Rich:

It's funny: Rodney Anonymous favorited a post I made today, and I forgot entirely that I was playing a Milkmen song to close. Weird synchronicity.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Austin Rich:

Thanks again everyone!
