A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Good evening!

Wiggling the rabbit ears around while the picture tube warms up.
Avatar 9:03pm MarkTime:

THe penguin on my telly is about to explode
Avatar 9:04pm austinrich:

Good Hello, everyone! Just getting the bus going... We'll be pulling out here in the a moment...
Avatar 9:04pm WR:

I gotta use the pliers to change the channel since the knob got lost.
Avatar 9:05pm MarkTime:

The remote control at my house was "Get up ya lazy bum and change the channel"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Scott67:

Ya fucken frightened me in your intro Austin! If it & broke don't baroque it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Scott67:

Avatar 9:08pm austinrich:

Scott67 totally gets the joke!
Avatar 9:09pm austinrich:

I was the remote in my house, as the oldest kid. I was sort of happy to opt out of certain viewing opportunities.
Avatar 9:14pm austinrich:

A good portion of this material comes from the "Hyped2Death" library of rare punk 7"s and 45s. Stuff only the old fogies care about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Mr Fab:

Ha, i didn't realize that "T.V. Pharmaceuticals" and "Television Television" were two separate songs. Skillful mixing, Mr DJ man!
Avatar 9:15pm austinrich:

A lot of these songs have very "similar" chord structures.
Avatar 9:16pm austinrich:

I am absolutely in love with the riffs on this song. I've been thinking about doing a version of it, but with different lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Scott67:

Skyhooks, Horror Movie would fit in here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Scott67:

Max Headroom was my TV guru.
Avatar 9:24pm austinrich:

If I haven't already plugged it enough, I have a Max Headroom podcast, too. We're on a bit of break for the holidays, but we should be doing new episodes soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Scott67:

Loved Repo Man! πŸ‘πŸ˜ŽπŸ»
Avatar 9:25pm austinrich:

When I was going through my film courses for my major, I wrote a few different papers on Repo Man. It's sort of like Holy Mountain, in a way...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Scott67:

I was a total fanboy back in th day! Mmmmm Max had it all goin on in his plastic Head. Matt Frewer never really exploded out of it though.
Avatar 9:27pm austinrich:

He's had some good roles over the years, but he never went mainstream. He's picked a lot of really interesting roles, but never any breakout ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Mr Fab:

What do you do on you Max Headroom podcast?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Scott67:

I wrote an Art Uni essay on Blade Runner.
Avatar 9:29pm austinrich:

We watch something related to Max, and talk about it. Then I cut in samples from the show, to illustrate our points. We keep in "PG" for some reason. It's mostly fun; my co-host has no idea what Max is, and has been shocked as she has watched them with me.
Avatar 9:29pm austinrich:

I wanna read that essay, Scott67.
Avatar 9:29pm austinrich:

I also made contact with the creators, so we've ran some interviews. Including one panel discussion, reuniting three of the primary creative team members for the US show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Scott67:

Max was a British TV Show though, yeah?
Avatar 9:32pm austinrich:

There was a UK show, and a US show. The two iterations have one writer in common, who wrote the scripts for both.
Avatar 9:32pm austinrich:

Been trying to get in touch with the British creative team... they're a little harder to reach.
  9:34pm andrewBunny:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Scott67:

If they're still alive? Early 80's seems a lifetime ago now. But still fresh to me. I never fucken grew up!
Avatar 9:35pm austinrich:

This song comes from a full live set performance by the band in question, PDX's answer to The Flaming Lips, The Pink Snowflakes! I hosted them a few time over the years:

Avatar 9:36pm austinrich:

Yeah. And they're REALLY old. They know George R.R. Martin socially, and stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Scott67:

They're fanfuckentastic!
  9:40pm andrewBunny:

This and that. No big whoop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Mr Fab:

I remember when Max headroom was on David Letterman (via a TV monitor), Max was being his usual wacky self, and Dave wise-cracked β€œdo you have a plate in your headβ€œ? Headroom’s reply: β€œI have a whole set of china!”
Avatar 9:42pm austinrich:

I've seen that Letterman clip! It's great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Scott67:

Austin, there will be a TRASH CULT Show starting in the Jungle soon mate. You may enjoy it!
Avatar 9:43pm austinrich:

If you wanna listen to the entire live performance by The Juanita Family & Friends, here's a link! It's got an interview too, if I remember correctly... it was 15 years ago.

Avatar 9:44pm austinrich:

Make sure to remind me when that's on, Scott67. I'll need to watch that.
Avatar 9:44pm austinrich:

Watch / listen. Pardon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Scott67:

Or listen even?πŸŽΆπŸ“»
Avatar 9:45pm austinrich:

Watch? Like I watch anything but Max Headroom...
  9:45pm andrewBunny:

Ned's!!! Oh, man, I loved them back in the day!
  9:45pm andrewBunny:

As a bass player, I loved that they had 2 bass guys!
Avatar 9:46pm austinrich:

I mean, if you had any sense, you probably dated a girl that loved Ned's... and now you've got a soft spot 20 years later.
Avatar 9:46pm austinrich:

(Or is that just me?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Scott67:

Mr.Fab, is 5pm Saturday Slot still okay for a 3 hour TRASH feast?
Sorry to arrange shit with you in people's Shows, but I'm a chatty guy. & email is fucken boring.
  9:47pm andrewBunny:

OK. You pegged me! I indeed had a Ned's girl!
Avatar 9:47pm austinrich:

My next punk band is "The Sloppy Licks."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Scott67:

Austin, if I get my head around the ACCU, there should be plenty to watch to.
Avatar 9:48pm austinrich:

I keep getting bugged by all my Discord friends that I should have a visual component, but it's just me in my office drinking bourbon. It's not that exciting to watch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Scott67:

My first girlfriend & I called our Dog Fang. But it died under anesthesia being de-sexed.
  9:50pm andrewBunny:

Strangely enough, I'm listening and drinking vodka. Not exciting, either.
Avatar 9:50pm austinrich:

Ooooo, that's awful, Scott. I'm sorry.

We just lost a pet recently. It's awful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Scott67:

You can chuck Images, gifs & Art on the ACCU. In place of Album Art.
Avatar 9:51pm austinrich:

Hmmmmmmmm. I'm should look into that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Scott67:

Thanks Austin, it was 1988. But I have lost 3 more of my closest canine cobbers since.
Avatar 9:54pm austinrich:

Loosing a pet is AWFUL. It's a family member, and it's hard. But we persevere. We have two new cats that we got a year ago, so the overlap was nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Scott67:

Gus the Dog is my Brother from another Species Mother right now. It's just me & him in my home. There's a couple of pics in my Profile.
Avatar 10:01pm austinrich:

My wife and I have been talking about a dog, but we had a storm knock down some of our fence, so we're waiting to get the fence repaired for the dog's sake. We want a safe yard for them to run around in.
Avatar 10:04pm austinrich:

I love the MUZAK that was playing in the background at Big Time TV.
Avatar 10:06pm austinrich:

Oswald 5-0 was a Eugene band that put on a lot of great shows. They sort of owned a certain era of 90's punk for the city. We ALMOST got to play a show with them, which I still have a mis-printed flier from.

Tragically, Robert from Oswald 5-0 died in a car crash in the early 2000's. A great compilation of their material was released, but they never got the notice they deserved, in my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Scott67:

Okay, well this just went from great Show, to Beautifuckenful Show mate!
Avatar 10:07pm austinrich:

This is the comp you'll want to track down if you can find it:

Avatar 10:08pm austinrich:

Oh, and that Neutered Prunes album... the one that's still available...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Scott67:

I think you will enjoy TRASH CULT Austin.
Avatar 10:10pm austinrich:

I'm looking forward to it, for sure!
Avatar 10:11pm austinrich:

Coming up next is a song I don't know anything about! I recorded it off the radio in the late 90's... I actually played it on my show then, but didn't keep good records then. Any chance anyone can identify it?
Avatar 10:12pm austinrich:

I think it was a live song, from a live album. (Only based on context clues.) Otherwise: I have no idea what this song is, who it is, etc. The answer is probably pretty boring, but I'm still curious...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Scott67:

It's bloody good whatever it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Scott67:

Can you play that mystery song to that App thing that names tunes?
Avatar 10:23pm austinrich:

I've tried that a couple times. Nothing has come up, and I've tried a few times over the years. I figure this audience would know better than almost anyone else.
Avatar 10:24pm DJ Babs:

Damn! I missed the mystery song! I will have to check it in the archives! Howdy all! Happy Tuesday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Scott67:

TV's on & I'm takin a shit. New favourite lyrics.
Avatar 10:24pm austinrich:

Good Hello, DJ Babs! Maybe I'll play the mystery song after all of the pre-programed material, for anyone who missed it.
Avatar 10:25pm austinrich:

Yeah, that Ticks song is something special.
Avatar 10:25pm DJ Babs:

Awesome! I do love a good mystery!! Also I love a good themed episode!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Scott67:

G'day Babs! Austin's Shoe is you & Derek's kinda maple syrup, surely!
Avatar 10:26pm austinrich:

I try to keep a theme when I can, but I often get distracted by my own themes... if that makes sense. (They get too in my head, I guess?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Scott67:

His Show's prettygood too!
Avatar 10:27pm austinrich:

I don't know. I have a lot of shoes, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Scott67:

Fuckit! Just gunna Clicky Star the whole bloody Show!
Avatar 10:28pm DJ Babs:

Howdy Scott! Yes! It's true! They are quite complimentary!
Avatar 10:29pm DJ Babs:

@Austinrich...you should definitely talk to Derek about themes taking over...he knows all about that!
Avatar 10:29pm DJ Babs:

I love this tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Scott67:

I look forward to Mick & I joining you guys in the Jungle Room. To TRASH CULT the joint with yz!!
Avatar 10:30pm austinrich:

I start in one place... i end up somewhere else...
Avatar 10:30pm austinrich:

I get this "Doctor TV" riff stuck in my head, too. I wanna cover this one someday... but maybe change the lyrics, too.
Avatar 10:31pm DJ Babs:

We really do have a fantastic crew! It will be so great to have you on air with us!
Avatar 10:32pm austinrich:

All the shows on this channel really do it for me. It's like knowing the "cool" DJs at a college station. But they all have their own channel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Scott67:

I'm enjoying the ride!πŸ‘πŸ˜ŽπŸ»
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Scott67:

The 1st TRASH CULT Show is all Aussie. 3 hours of the shit, punctuated by Me & Mick talkin shit.
Avatar 10:35pm DJ Babs:

I am so looking forward to learning all about the good Aussie bands I don't know about yet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Scott67:

We do a whole set of Bands from our town of Bendigo. Most who don't exist anymore.
Avatar 10:39pm austinrich:

The sound on this recording is awful. I did my best to improve before broadcast, but...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Scott67:

I like the sound smear test! It's Punk mate!πŸ’€
Avatar 10:40pm austinrich:

Oh yeah, I'm totally out of the Aussie loop. I know Radio Birdman... and those other bands they mention in the Radio Birdman documentary... and that's it.
Avatar 10:40pm austinrich:

This "Television Generation" song is also something that gets stuck in my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Scott67:

It shall be, the Education of Austin.
Avatar 10:41pm austinrich:

Please! I love this kind of stuff, but I'm boringly US-centric.
Avatar 10:42pm austinrich:

Hey, it's Max!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Scott67:

Fuck mate! Aussie is where it's all getting sweaty & shitfaced in the Pub Rock Punk scene man!
Avatar 10:43pm austinrich:

"I wonder where this wire goes?" I still say that when I'm bored and want to leave the room.
Avatar 10:44pm austinrich:

I lied. I guess I kinda know the stuff on this comp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Scott67:

I still have my Reagan, "what's this button for ", moments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Scott67:

Well there ya go mate. Ya stepped in some Oz!
Avatar 10:46pm austinrich:

But really, this comp probably only scratches the surface.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Scott67:

So much more since 87 mate.
Avatar 10:47pm austinrich:

I get this "Cortinas" song stuck in my head, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Scott67:

I forgot how funny the Max Movie was!!
Avatar 10:48pm austinrich:

As a snotty youth, I used to say that 85 was the "good rock and roll" cut off. But I realize there is a lot more good stuff, if you keep looking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Mr Fab:

Have had this on (loudly) as I do some work around the house, and I can’t believe how many punks songs there are about TV! It’s weird, there were almost no songs about TV before punk. Future archaeologists judging our culture by our music would have no idea what an impact TV had. Until they get to the punk era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Scott67:

There will always be the disenfranchised needing to fuck shit up with sound mate!
Avatar 10:51pm DJ Babs:

Super fun!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Scott67:

There was always a TV in all my digs, no matter how shitty. A TV came before a fridge even! It gave us shit to get angry at!!
Avatar 10:53pm DJ Babs:

Day 4 of Dry January and I already miss wine SO BAD
Avatar 10:54pm austinrich:

I should do a dry month soon. Maybe Feb? I've got nothing going on next month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Mr Fab:

Amazing, a full show even skipping the obvious ones like β€œTV Party,” or β€œTVOD.” And then there’s all those songs about specific shows, like β€œwhere’s Captain Kirk”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Scott67:

Legendary Babs!! Summer here, so take my beer? From my cold dead hands!
Avatar 10:55pm austinrich:

I do love that "Where's Captain Kirk" song.
Avatar 10:56pm austinrich:

I mean, I pulled all those obvious ones too, Mr. Fab. But I figured I had more than enough to fill this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Scott67:

One of my big accomplishments at my old radio station in PDX was getting the singer of The Epoxies to do a radio show... which got her into DJing in a larger sense. She's hilarious, and a great entertainer. I heard that The Epoxies were coming back once Covid isn't a concern here...
