Franco Twinkie:

Richard Meltzers weaving all over the highway style of music criticism of the early 70's in Coast Magazine was a foundational tactic for understanding the vagaries and contradictions of rock music out West. I didn't know Steve was an avid fan. Explains a lot at this late date.
  1:46pm
Marie:

I couldn't stand the nebulous totally self-referential music criticism that was in the Village Voice, etc.. It was hard to read and at the end it was like, so, what does the music sound like? What kind of music is it? Did the critic like it? It';s like the writer was trying to "riff" with words and not accomplishing the main goal--communicating about the artist and the music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
Franco Twinkie:

This was well documented, so I'm not saying anything provocative. I saw Vox Pop at Beyond Baroque in Venice, and Paul did the whole show without a stich of clothes on.
  1:48pm

@Marie, I completely agree, especially in retrospect. It took the notion of rock-critic-as-artist much too far.

As a, I don't even know what to call it - a mutant form of explication, rock criticism of that particular time is almost unreadable. But strangely, I think it was equal to the subject it was attempting to talk about.

Hey Amy, yeah, totally. I'm not sure if that started with Hunter Thompson or what but it was like, get over yourself, man. And, sometimes it seems like music critics are frustrated musicians

Hey Franco, just saw your comment. I don't know if music was harder to describe at that point. I mean, it def. seems challenging in general, but their focus on their own very specific experiences was not good to me

@Marie - I totally agree with you. It's frustrating reading music criticism when it seems like the critic is more a fan of writing than music. Historically, I think the apex of this style was mid 80s-mid 90s.

Glad he mentioned Pat, a close collaborator/archivist lo these many years. I I met Steve in ‘98 and interviewed him 2 years later for an article on Pat’s variegated career. Have seen Dream Syndicate, Miracle 3 a few times since; and a recent solo house concert Pat selected the set list for.

True that Marie. John Ned Mendelsohn had a group called Christopher Milk in the early 70's. Even as a seventeen year old, my opinion of them was corrupted having read Johns imperious observations.
