A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hey hey! My T. S. Eliot impression is pretty sharp. I usually save it for April. It's a big hit with K8.

Hey, TDK60. Yeah, following SM Ken's lead, my new phrase for the week is National Psychopathy Carnival Week. But I'm taking advantage of it to jump on the cheese grenade. Making a baked ziti today.

Ooh, this is the version where Eliot accompanied himself on a guitar, during his brief and largely forgotten beatnik phase.

Hi Trouble, everyone! What's shaking, Handy?

Do I dare to eat a peach?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am mariano:

Only if you're a drowned Phoenician sailor, Handy.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:07am Handy Haversack:

It's that thick St. Louis accent that kept him from success in the cafes of Greenwich Village.
Avatar 9:07am Zipperhead7:

Howdy folks! Figures that Eliot would have aristocratic diction
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am mariano:

Handy: His anti-Semitism was doubtless informed by his constantly being upstaged by a young Dylan.
  9:09am Peter from Dover NJ:

Good morning Trouble, thanks for keeping us company this morning.
  9:10am Braf:

Choose misery, Mr. Eliot.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:10am Handy Haversack:

Is there no tragic outcome that can't be traced back to the fickle preferences of the Beatniks?

Harold Budd probably helps everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am ParUbi:

t.s.eliot, what a pleasant surprise!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am mariano:

Eliot's readings of Four Quartets are also really good, and there's an excellent reading by Alec Guinness that I found on Soundcloud. Of course, I could listen to Alec Guinness reading actuarial tables.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am (Murakami Whywolf))):

Spaulding Gray, I think it was, described hearing the Eliot recording coming out of dorm rooms filled with 'coeds' who claimed not want to die virginal during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Note the St Louis similarities to Burroughs' declamatory voice, or maybe Burroughs intentionally aped his a bit, or maybe that's just how U.S. private schools taught it 1866-1950.

Murakami: You are spot-on with the Eliot-Burroughs connection. The word that comes it mind is "patrician". I think it may also be relevant that they both attended Harvard, and Eliot was from a prominent "Boston brahmin" family.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am mariano:

Murakami: I think in Eliot's case it's also a matter of "more English than the English." As soon as he got there, he went full native (to be fair, it was his heritage): the poshest accent, the most conservative monarchist politics, the high-churchiest Anglo-Catholicism, etc. Kind of like a more genteel version of Americans who go to Ireland with the "Kiss Me I'm Irish" sweaters.

Sipping espresso with chicory while listening and reading passages from Upton Sinclair’s “Cry For Justice,” the introduction for which was written by comrade Jack London.

Excellent poem by a Percy Adams Hutchinson (American poet 1875-1952) followed by a quote from a writer Henry A. Overstreet (born the same year) that is just hitting the spot right now. Much like your set, Trouble, and the company here …

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Dave in Vermont:

Purple sadness is the sadness of classical music and eggplant, the stroke of midnight, human organs, ports cut off for part of every year, words with too many meanings, incense, insomnia, and the crescent moon. It is the sadness of play money, and icebergs seen from a canoe. It is possible to dance to purple sadness, though slowly, as slowly as it takes to dig a pit to hold a sleeping giant. Purple sadness is pervasive, and goes deeper into the interior than the world’s greatest nickel deposits, or any other sadness on earth. It is the sadness of depositories, and heels echoing down a long corridor, it is the sound of your mother closing the door at night, leaving you alone.
-Mary Ruefle
from My Private Property (p 37)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:00am Handy Haversack:

I will be pan-searing and spicifying some Brussels sprouts for appearances' sake.

Not to be too negative, but that NYS bill sounds like total posturing and shifting the problem to users, not manufacturers. It will squeeze the people who can least afford it and who need those bikes to make a living and will make no difference to anyone else. Go after the manufacturers and the Silicon Valley venture-capital architects of the gig economy if you want to make a difference, O legislators. But all they want to do is posture. Antiworker regulations only hurt the workers, it turns out.

Zinn, Astoria?

I'm with Handy - bike "accidents" are mostly murder by automobile. There's a great amount of education on all sides that's needed. There's an interesting question up here in Kingston which has some new bike paths: should electrics be allowed on them? Stretches of some of them are part of the Empire State Trail system.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Irene Trudel:

Greatly appreciated, WHenry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Dave in Vermont:

To oversimplify it, there's plenty of rooms for all public transpo, freight, skateboards, bikes etc etc when we get rid of private cars (making some exceptions of course)

Thanks as always for the Black Panther stuff!

Have you read “Black Against Empire”? The introduction was riveting. Has Huey Newton and (I think) Bobby Seale coming down the airliner staircase of a plane just landed in Peking (maybe) to a throng of love from Communist China. Preempting Nixon’s visit as the first American emissaries during the Cold War.

Just before the pandemic I had to return it to the library and didn’t get to read the rest. Think I must have it for my own library.
