Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:54am listener james from westwood:

I am at this moment copyediting a biography of Johnny Cash, so hearing "Cold Shoulder" on the stream is an extra treat!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:57am Doug Schulkind:

@listener james from westwood
I was digging it, too. Waited for it to end before connecting to the stream!
  8:57am Listener Robert:

Are you deliberately trying to sound like one of those pre-recorded network announcements for the affiliate stations to cue to?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:58am listener james from westwood:

Always gotta let the Man in Black have his say!
  8:58am Listener Robert:

Was Belafonte a serious xylophonist?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
I have no idea what you are referring to. Just sounding like the person I think I sound like.
Avatar 🥁 8:59am PAULS:

Doug -- the typo in the show description. Has it been there forever or did you add it recently?? (tuba choirs 'form' Mozambique). Good morning.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:00am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
I made that GIF from footage taken from the film Odds Against Tomorrow.
Avatar 🥁 9:01am PAULS:

Belafonte was clearly an angry xylophonist
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:01am listener james from westwood:

I came for the heavy xylophoning, I stayed for the skinny tie.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:01am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug 'n Friday folks.

LR he looks pretty fu..ing serious.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:01am Doug Schulkind:

@PAULS
The typo has been there for 25 years and I never noticed it.

Hi there Doug and all other listeners!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

Someone has GOT to be fucking with me. There is simply no way I would never have seen that before. And listener james from westwood would have gently alerted me!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, Brian in UK! Andrew in Toronto!

Drumming out our frustrations today I see. I'll grab a mallet! Good morning Doug and all listening in.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

@PAULS
I just fixed the fucker. That's really cray-cray, though.
Avatar 🥁 9:04am PAULS:

morning, Irene! And Doug - I'd start with family members and work from there
  9:04am Listener Robert:

I meant your announcement a few minutes before the show sounds just like the automated ones they'll put on networked transmissions telling the affiliate stations it'll be X time before they come out of commercial, etc. Your voice is "too good". I get the same thing when I answer the phone; people think I'm a recording because I try to sound extra clear.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:06am listener james from westwood:

@Doug: I thoroughly spaced on that one! I blame Andy Breckman.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Maggie B.:

Ah, you fixed it! I read your show description over and over again and thought I was losing my chops. What was the mistake?
Avatar 🥁 9:08am PAULS:

@Maggie B it read "tuba choirs form Mozambique"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

So happy you're here, Irene! duke! StringOFperils! Maggie B!

@Maggie B
The word from was presented as form.
Avatar 🥁 9:09am PAULS:

Which sounds like a headline from the late 1930s
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:09am listener james from westwood:

It was so gratifying to watch the pledge % ascend like a graceful freeform rocket over the month. And then keep on chugging after Halloween like the Voyager probes still pinging away from the fringes of the Solar System!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Althought it is true that for many years, the text of my show description was in much smaller type, so it's possible I missed it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:11am Brian in UK:

Doug, let it go. We will still listen & chuckle at your witticisms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Maggie B.:

Is it a known fact that tuba choirs didn't form Mozambique? Who is to say?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:13am dutchtheo:

Howdy Doug and drummers, I just filled out the tuba form... now it is gone!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

I must have a an old screen shot of my playlist page from ages ago that will tell the story. As a ex-professional editor/copyeditor, I'm mortified. As a unabashed purveyor of the heavy-heavy funk, I don't give a lick!
  9:14am Listener Robert:

You under-credited the donors, in that it wasn't Saturday, but Friday afternoon (ET) when the original fall fundraising goal was met this year. Considering this and last year's Hell/Heaven/Heckraisers, WFMU's been conservative setting those goals.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
I hope you submitted your tuba form in triplicate.

@Listener Robert
You are right. It was during Sheila B's show. Thanks for catching yet another of my errors!

Hey Doug! Did you ever consider adding a more classical-oriented show to the stream? I am feeling the loss of Bethany Ryker's A440.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
I have long desired a classical-oriented show. On WFMU and on the stream. I have always felt that the absence of so-called "classical" music (whatever the hell that is) from the WFMU universe has been a huge flaw in our freeform ointment. Bethany's show has been, whenever it's been on, a balm. And the bomb.
Avatar 🥁 9:55am bobdc:

Yeah, I love Brahms and Mozart, but I didn't mean them.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:56am adamdoesit:

Chris, Doug, and doctorjazz, I pulled out Abdullah's "Children of Africa" LP the other night, and there was Kippie in the liner notes, "the father of us all." I'd seen him there before; this time his name resonated in a whole new way. Sometimes "from" and "form" are one and the same.

Since you chose to play this: heard interview with Jordan where she said this arrangement of Sunshine is based on drunk Pennsylvania coal miners playing the song over and over on a juke box. Something that she and George Russell witnessed. Thinking of how a song where sunshine is deep complement might resonate with coal miners is illuminating to say the least.

Sheila Jordan hit New York and found it hard to break into the scene. She had a long run singing at a lesbian bar in the Village. The legendary pianist Herbie Nichols sometimes accompanied her. On occasion, Cecil Taylor sat in for Herbie.

You are absolutely right about David and Stork, and I adore that they include "classical" in their palette of sound colors.

Also, you should check out Cecil Taylor's early LP "Love For Sale." That will hip you to the possibilities.

I love Sheila's slender tone, but it's her rhythmic sensibility that just slays me. Got me thinking about how closely she studied Bird, and transposed him into such a feminine voice. Excited to hear her with Rudd (and Lacy, too?).

Yes Doyle Dane Bernbach! My mind went blank for a moment there. (Not an increasingly unusual occurrence.) As I did happen to mention, the great Steinski once worked at DDB. He was working there at the time that he and Double Dee won that contest with Tommy Boy Records.

The Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 was famous for its unruly audience. They had just witnessed Jimi Hendrix and were not in the mood for anything but more Hendrix.
