Playlist image Favoriting

From 1968 till 1985 (then) anonymous British studio musicians had to buy their own copy of hit records and reproduce them in studio having limited time. The results were compiled by Pickwick records on budget LPs named Top of the Pops, having nothing to do with the popular TV program of the BBC that just simply had forgotten to trade-mark the name. In this episode you'll hear the alternative versions of hits from artists like David Bowie, The Sweet, The Osmonds, Slade, The Rubettes, T-Rex, 10CC, ELO, etc...

Hi Jan! Chresti, Fab, MHLee, and David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm

Hi David! Yes, some singers were really making an effort to sound like the original.

Hi, Jan! Interesting marketing ploy. I assume buyers didn't know what they were (not) getting until they played these?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
StringOFperils:

I think 10cc's 'Donna' was meant to be preposterously terrible in the first place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Look what the cat brought in! It's Paper Kosmonaut!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
MHLee:

The earliest cover of Pink Floyd was a budget band from Canada released in the US... but no one in the US would have heard the single the budget band was covering so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi SOFp! Yes, it was a lucrative business model.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi PK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

"Alle Dertien Goed! in the Netherlands at least had the original artists. But then that was at the Philips label. But they both had hoezenpoezen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
Jan Turkenburg:

and "Alle 14 Favoriet!"
Avatar 12:41pm
Mr Fab:

Def a "buyer beware" scam going on with these, SOp. If they're anything like American budget labels, they would have been sold as impulse buys near checkout stands in places like drugstores, selling for less then the real records, luring in the not-so-sophisticated.
The almost-porn covers probably helped sell a few copies too, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I believe the LPs were sold at roughly the price of a real artist single. In The Netherlands we had something like this with Dutch language hits, played by others, but often somewhere in small characters the actual artists were mentioned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

This is one of my own creations (a fake "Alle 13 goed!" I did a couple of years ago: i.redd.it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm

ha ha, the "crazy horse" sounds more like a kitten mewing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
chresti:

I recall being duped by similar hits compilations when I checked one out at the library when I was 11.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

And this one: i.redd.it...
(I am no longer on Reddit but these still are in the catacombs..)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
MHLee:

We slways seem to find a couple of terrible attempts to do the same for WWR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Jan Turkenburg:

@ MrFab yes, it's hilarious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
StringOFperils:

Canada had stuff like this too. In addition to licensed compilations by Pickwick, and K-Tel, which was infamous for 'groove-cramming', managing to fit about 20 songs on each side so it sounded just as crappy as it did coming out of the dashboard radio in your dad's car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Jan Turkenburg:

this elo-cover is quite good too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

i.redd.it... (I do have a weakness for these kinds of records. That is why it is sonice to make fun of them.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

@ Jan: Indeed it is, These musicians weren't goofing around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
MHLee:

www.youtube.com...
Here's the Pink Floyd budget cover that proceeded the song itself in thus US....
Avatar 12:50pm
Mr Fab:

K-Tel in US/Canada did feature "Original Hits by the Original artists!," not remakes, tho as SOp pointed out, they would cram way too many tracks on to one side. To make them fit, some times they would abruptly fade down some tracks, to my annoyance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

We had K-tel here too, Mr. Fab. I always was amazed about how many songs they could get onto one side of a record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
StringOFperils:

Yes, they were legit licensed things. Double-dipping off the cash pile.
  12:51pm
David in California:

I wasn't duped by soundalike records, but later I was duped by oldies compilation cassettes for which artists like Lou Christie and Archie Bell had done cheap rerecordings of their hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Jan Turkenburg:

PK, do you know these books: www.kdx.be...
Avatar 12:53pm
Mr Fab:

I hated when they did that, David! I bought a crappy Tommy James album I believe that was inferior '80s remakes of his hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
MHLee:

I love purchasing comps of Amazon because they often are completely illogical... my "60s hits" one had the Shags (not the Shaggs) and the Blues Image version ofBorn to Wild
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

@ Jan: Yes, but I never knew where to get them. Thanks Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

The funniest thing about my Alle 13 Goerd parodies is that if you google them, they are amongst the originals and you never even notice they're fake until you read the names of the artists and songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
MHLee:

On yeah and the last song of the 60s hit comp was a song from 1981
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Jan Turkenburg:

hahahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm

Mick Faker is too loud. He even shouts his whispers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm

Apparently Elton John was on some of these
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
MHLee:

Oh this is bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Augh my ears!
  1:00pm
David in California:

MHLee, a friend says that Elton John did a soundalike version of To Be Young, Gifted, and Black.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
StringOFperils:

This songs seems so incongruous with the near-pedophilia LP cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
StringOFperils:

Oh yeah!! Aim low!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
MHLee:

This kinda grooves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
StringOFperils:

Gawd I hated this (original) record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

This version really misses some salt. It just doesn't kick the same kind of ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
StringOFperils:

This is why the New York Dolls invented themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Jan Turkenburg:

yes and the singer is also having trouble getting the high notes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

It is far from a black belt, so to say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Wouldn't it be funny if there would be versions of songs on these albums that actually are better than the original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
StringOFperils:

Sorry. I know. A lot of people liked that Carl Douglas record. different strokes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Jan Turkenburg:

ues, but considering the short time in which these underpaid musicians had to deliver, I'm surprised it doesn't sound a lot worse...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Jan Turkenburg:

PK, I played a few on other shows that listeners actually thought were better than the original. I can't remember which ones though. Should look it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
MHLee:

This sounds like a garage band record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm

Wow, That Vol.30 girl is stunning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

*I'll get me coat*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
StringOFperils:

I can just see a bunch of guys that look like Mr Rogers reading this off of handwritten charts while spending 10 bucks on studio time recording this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
MHLee:

You're lucky pat boone didn't cover it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
StringOFperils:

Yeah, Pat Boone set the bar high when it comes to ill-conceived (immaculately-conceived?) covers.
  1:15pm
David in California:

On the other hand, the singer of My Name Is Jack would never be mistaken for Mike D'Abo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Oh, but this is tragic.
  1:20pm
David in California:

PK, be glad he's not doing Here Comes the Sun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm

Hah. the guitarist hit one real stinker in there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm

Still a little amazed about the procduction value. They actually used an orchestra. Not the best one but the best they could get for an apple and an egg.

still this isn't bad at all...
