Jagger's right of course. Bob Brainen did a Brian Jones profile in recent months. He made the point that - the Stones did follow TheBeatles - but - they always rose to the occasion. Obviously the Stones wrote indispensable stuff. The Stones proud to be Rhythm & Blues devotees as they should be. & compared to TheBeatles - almost everyone is a little two-dimensional, lets face it.

RE: getting the lyrics. I read John Cale about him saying he asked Leonard Cohen, saying he would like to cover Hallelujah and received back some huge number of verses from Cohen. The quote on wikipedia:
"Cale had watched Cohen perform the song and asked Cohen to send him the lyrics. Cohen then faxed Cale 15 pages of lyrics. Cale claims that he "went through and just picked out the cheeky verses.""

Leonard said he switched it up whenever he performed it too!

Yes, apparently Cohen had many verses for that song, which delights me no end.

and though probably- though not his intention (unless he really was THAT much of a genius!) it made the song indefinitely coverable. ...some folks even turning a song obviously about sex (and the spirituality involved with it) into some kind of religious crap.

Story is Allen Klein - the real villain in keeping The Beatles on bad terms with each other - had Rights to both George's 'My Sweet Lord' *&* to 'He's So Fine' - & was playing them against each other for profit !

Dylan famously told Lennon that he thought the line was "I get high" (not "I can't hide') and it sounds like that's what Al Green was just singing there, too. Great cover, to boot. As is this whole show, Mary - great stuff! x

RR i think (well, according to George, if i remember correctly) the accusation started and George just wanted to let them (the writers) have the rights to my sweet lord and move on but his lawyers (& klein no doubt) said he "can't" do that.
then klein got the typically machiavellian idea to but he's so fine and continue the bullshit.
