Ugh, Fallon. Reminds me of the documentary about Joan Rivers and they have her go down a list of comedians and she praises something about each one until she gets to Ben Stiller and just says "Lucky. Very luck," or something to that effect. For whatever reason, Lorne Michaels

I can acknowledge that these are extreme sounds that together sound cacophonous, especially to ears new to it. I have had earnest conversations (well, somewhat earnest) with my spouse about the appeal of these sounds. I find it hard to explain (which is in part why I'm a terrible critic). But for me it often boils down to the sound of surprise, and finding joy (among other things) amid the complex, surprising sounds.

The first part had much thrashing, crashing, and squealing, but I like how it has now varied with individual solos and more quiet interplay. The big danger in free jazz, in my opinion, is when it mistakes loud sounds for innovation or freedom or something, and doesn't go beyond them.

DocJazz, Let's see if I can boil it down... mostly the show was put together at the last minute at an art gallery. My friend Fredrik was sitting on the other side in the audience. Frith and Bennink were playing their things, but not necessarily together. Someone in the audience kicked over one of those hard plastic wine cups and Frith responded by tossing a few objects onto the ground. I felt like it was a taunt for someone in the audience to respond, so I kicked over my cup. To this Bennink responded by playing his drum throne, making it squeak, etc. Seemed to me that this was the turning point where the two musicians loosened up and started really listening to each other. After the show I was talking with my friend Fredrik and it turns out he was the one who had accidentally kicked over the cup in the first place. We felt proud.
