Pittsburgh is blessed to have a local, community-powered radio station that is completely independent and unaffiliated with NPR or other homogenizing influences. But Pittsburgh is cursed by the fact that this same station is the most boring purveyor of vanilla corporate dreck. What a waste.

Sadly, Phil Schaap never ascertained exactly where Charlie Parker got his replacement reed during the Savoy session of Feb. 12, 1939, the same date as Dizzy Gillespie's parents' wedding anniversary. It may have been at Roy's Music Shop, which was then on 41st St, although it later moved to 39th St. Roy moved to Florida in 1961 and sadly died in 1969. But that perhaps is not entirely to the point.

In his later shows, he was obviously very upset at the lack of basic jazz knowledge the youngin's have (I think he did some teaching at Columbia). As he put it, in the 50's and 60's, even if you weren't a jazz fan, you would have heard of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, not so with the crop of young students now. You could hear it really riled him.

I actually went down to WYEP when I first got here. I passed their little screening test and was approved to do fill-in show, but I just couldn't go through with it. Happily, the Drummer Stream just started growing exponentially and it turned out I didn't have time for any extra radio.

StringOFperils:

Jazz needs a 20 year old 'influencer' on Instagram, or whatever flavor-of-the-month platform has flickered into noticablity, but it will still be all about the superficial, the 'optics'. Most art for the last 40 years is talked about in terms of units sold and for how much and who was there and what they wore. You folks need to carry the torch for jazz now; there always has to be some kind of lantern in the darkness.

Daniel Manning:

Hi I was just reminiscing with some band mates about an incident involving Bobby Lee Fears. I’d like to fill in some details myself, and in looking around saw your comments. It was a very wild episode for us. Especially with the connection there was to the rainbow wig/sports events guy: Roland Stewart
Bobby hired my band to accompany him for a re-union show with Lester Maddox in the early 80s .Bobby’s 'manager' was the original John 3:16 guy with the multi-colored clown wig at ball games. We had a few rehearsals with BLF, but Maddox never came -then the gig night came at the Penta Hotel penthouse suite. They had publicized the event well, and all the tv stations were there, but
Maddox never made the show due to illness.
Bobby was recently out of prison, he’d said…for manslaughter. (For “shooting a man in the eye” in a jealous rage). Roland Stewart (the rainbow wig guy) was his finance man and always accompanied Bobby- Roland was getting money in the mail from supportive Christians around the country. He paid us in cash every rehearsal and before the performance. (It was all so shady seeming that we got paid up front always)
I’ve finally seen clips of their routine from the 70’s (the guvna and Bobby), now that we have the internet. I never realized it would have been so racist. Thank God Maddox never showed up. We wound up playing for the whole show, while Bobby waited for Maddox to arrive. When he didn’t ever come, BLF got up and did a couple numbers, till the tv cameras started packing up and going home. Very strange. We heard a lot of great stories about their experiences though... and we'll always remember Bobby's famous line as he gathered us, (all of us were fairly bewildered about the whole thing), into a prayer circle beforehand: "Sweet Jesus, take us to Vegas"
