I saw Ravi Shankar at Occidental Collage. I had already seen lots of live Indian classical music, but this was something different. Ravi put on a total rock concert. Lots of screaming and yelling. He really knew how to play and audience. When the review of the show came out in the L.A. Times a few days later, it was revealed that George Harrison was in the audience.

WR, George was the only Beatle I was truly mesmerized by. The first time I was delighted to know he was somewhere near by was in San Francisco in 1967. I was looking at a newspaper box on Market Street and on the front page of the SF Chronical was that picture of him and Patty walking through The Haight. I'm like - Wow, there's a Beatle around here!

It was right from the jump for me Natalie, when my older sister got Meet the Beatles for her eleventh birthday.
Avatar 2:23pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

George (in)famously scandalized & felt threatened by the Haight. Got out asap & got on the plane back - which hit turbulence as he chanted to Krishna for deliverance. I believe he resolved to give up LSD then. & - or - after he put it under a microscope & thot it looked like rope...
Total Beatetard since toddlerhood & the Sat. A.M. Cartoon show ! John was TheBeatles' favorite Beatle & mine too wayyy back - but they each a spoke in the wheel yerknow. Even SirMacca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
Franco Twinkie:

I know RR. George was just ahead of the curve when it came to a boots on the ground report about the Haight in August of 1967. No shade on Joan Didion, but she was no fellow traveler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
coelacanth∅:

the haight was already turning to shit by then. George was saddened by it.
Avatar 2:27pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...John & George had a real thing - the darker crazier half of TheBeatles. & yet - Lennon consistently undervalued the younger George - & as a Libra saw his Partnership ~ Rivary with Paul as the real action...

Point taken. But by that same token he's a dowsing rod for Melody & a stony hipster besides. You hate to be that Beatletard - but the Alchemy they had together - with John pushing it Forward with gravitas & Paul being Constructive was the magical thing.
Avatar 2:36pm

I agree with that RR. I almost got hit my a semi-truck while driving to El Paso. Temporary Secretary was playing and I thought "Oh hell no... I'm not going out on this song"

Paul wrote/performed some absolute crap with the beatles! and wings? mostly crap.
honey pie? wild honey pie?? kansas city heyhey?? a non-rocker acting the part. another girl? rubbish surpassed only by don't pass me by. . . but that's musically and even musically he also did some extraordinary things.

as a person...
when i was little i had the 4 photos from the white album on my wall. then i took down Paul's and Ringo's and left John & George up. for years.

... but as i continue to learn about Paul i raise him higher and higher in my regard.
easily higher than John, who i adore, but i know he was a dick.
Avatar 2:43pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Kansas City was a Cover. As well as being the Melodic Genius of Pop/Rawk - Paul was an Icon of LittleRichard wailing & balls out energy. Easy to forget.
Yeah you could take anybody with that much output & cherry-pick the lows. & yet - the lows are there.
...We sought to correct the notion that Paul was Music & John was Words. & then - it is observed that Paul was Melodically gifted - & John tended to compose within a few notes & always remarked on the quaiity & meaning of the Writing when you asked him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
coelacanth∅:

lest i be misunderstood, i Love John and respect him in many many ways. one way is that he knew he fucked up and faced himself; admitted his shortcomings to the world, and committed himself to changing for the better.

Also - John only got to age 40 & 1980 - which I think is forgotten in PostModern reassessment...

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

John was a Libra - but had Mercury in Scorpio like I do. His deep & sharp perception - & tongue - have in fact always been part of the appeal for some of us. & he was Year of Metal Dragon b. 1940. So larger than life & complex. Paul was / is more of a Craftsman & John was Art School Boho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
coelacanth∅:

Paul penned some extraordinary lyrics, and John composed some of the best beatles music.
they were both extremely gifted.
Paul was coming from the point of view of Little Richard and Elvis. he was a showman. so was Hendrix.
that used to bother me but, whatever. he knew how to put it together to create something people can relate to.
yeah sad he got so bad after the beatles... but then his last album is actually pretty good.

I was fourteen years old when The Beatles broke up. At that time there were to many other rock bands clogging up my head for me to become despondent. To me they were like statues of Greek gods - foreboding, but ultimately silent.

I was working on a TV commercial for AT&T. The location was Arthur Janov's house in Malibu. Him and his wife were staying at a hotel while we were there, so me and a friend decided to sleep in his living room, which was absolutely coated with pictures of him and all the famous people who ever summited to primal scream therapy under his watchful eye. We didn't get much sleep that night.

RR @243 yes kc/heyheyheyheyheyheyheyhey(!) was a cover; and like several other covers Paul sang it hits me as completely insincere. Paul mimicking his idols unconvincingly.
in competing with John and George in the early days, he tried to get wild -when he simply wasn't.
some of his later attempts at creating something "out there" were pathetically misguided too, like wild honey pie. helter skelter was decent though, even if contrived.

I get it coela. John's voice is simply one of my favorite Instruments in all Music. It communicates with all kinds of shade. Thing is Paul could scream & had the energy as well as the chops on instruments. It just adds up.
So Harvard Psych king Leary went in for that. Leary became kind of a white shoed lecture circuit kinda guy... Maybe he was sincere & it benefited him & I'ma jerk too...
