any bets on McGasko playing "It's Raining Men"?

I'd say the odds are better than him playing The Rain Song.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35am Matt Fiveash:

LastWhiteRhino, I've noticed that too- listening on 91.1 and looking at the playlist, I see the next song appear on the playlist a few minutes before I hear it. Had to stop looking at the playlist during Gaylord's show last night, too many spoilers- crazy FMU segues are more fun when you don't know what's coming... Hi Joe!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:38am Ken From Hyde Park:

On Friday evening, DJ Stork had some egregious technical errors and as a result, there's been a time shift since then.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:40am LastWhiteRhino:

@ Matt: It's kind of like "insider trading". Advance knowledge could be very profitable. Not that anybody does that ( wink-wink).

The FM signal has been 3-4 minutes behind the stream this morning for some reason. Not a complaint, just curious, it's not usually that much. (I only noticed because I can get 91.1 in the front of my house by if I listen in the bedroom or in the shower I have to use an Internet device).
Avatar 10:09am Joe McG:

@Marley: I liked the way that the accountant always looked at the camera, totally uncomprehending about the little horse thing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:09am Brian in UK:

Joe, funny you mention the Clientele. I was going to see them a few year back but the it was snowing to heavy to get there.

My mom met Tom T. Hall once. 1970s. He wrote a little ditty for her on the spot.
Avatar 10:28am Editor B:

Tom T. Hall passed away?!? I grew up listening to my parents' Faster Horses on 8-track. Still haunted by some of those songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Great stuff & giant contribution.
Avatar 10:29am βrian:

On what does one write a ditty?
  10:29am Mike W.:

I know this story is late but I only JUST arrived in The Field with Dusty. (When Tom T. sang “dusty road” I said to her, “They said your name! [brief pause] They said it again!”) Anyway, I remember taking my UK counterpart to see Art Brut at Irving Plaza back in the 2000s. Neither of us were huge fans but we liked them well enough, and it was the only decent gig in town that night. Anyway, we walked into the big room and Eddy’s flabber was gasted. “This is like four times as many people as they get in London,” he said. “And almost none of them are women.” #GainedInTranslation
  10:29am E:

Major blind spot for me, even though I love the music, is classic country. Anyone got a starter pack recommendation for some compilations?
Avatar 10:31am βrian:

Anything that Ricky Skaggs was involved with, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am listener Rey:

Morning Joe and Surface Noisers. We also lost another musical hero with the recent passing of Latin music legend Larry Harlow
  10:31am Mike W.:

@E everyone has their favorite but my feeling is if you get yourself some Hank Williams — not Hank III and definitely not Hank Jr. — you’re starting in a good place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

<3 Groovies
  10:33am Mike W.:

Johnny Cash, Carter Family, why not Ray Charles’s country records (which are great!), Patsy Cline, and all the multitudes that our fellow listeners are tapping into the Chat right now
  10:33am E:

Thanks Mike. I am aware of the discrepancy in quality among the Hanks!
Avatar 10:34am Joe McG:

@Rey: Oh, another bummer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Little Danny:

Good morning Joe, everybody.
  10:34am E:

I do have some Cash too! I think I get lost just beyond the surface level, though.
  10:36am Mike W.:

@E the Louvin Brothers, Hoyt Axton (‘My Griffin Was Gone’ isn’t his oldest but it is his best — actually one of the best albums ever, any genre), and if you’re feeling some country rockin and/or rockabilly, my fave there is Dale Hawkins
Avatar 10:36am Joe McG:

@Joe McG tell E (and me) a few of your’n classic country faves
  10:40am Mike W.:

Oh Charley Pride too!
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

@Mike W. and E: I agree you can't do better than starting with Hank Williams. Too many faves from too many eras to mention, really, although I love Dolly deeply, and Waylon, and Bobby Bare, and well, so many....
  10:41am Mike W.:

Buck Owens, George Jones, Roger Miller, Loretta Lynn (she should’ve been among the first names I mentioned really)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:42am Ken From Hyde Park:

May I add Roy Clark to the list?

have a little Tom T. A "Love Songs" LP and 2 tributes: "Real" ('98) and one to Songs from Fox Hollow, feat. the man himself.
I'll have to scour all my country comps for more. I know Gram and Nick Lowe covered him...

Afternoon Joe and listeners. Donovan trying to sound like Ivor Cutler?
Avatar 🎸 10:55am TDK60:

No Kevin, he's just being himself.

E, and all, speaking of classic country, did any one see the series of animated shows done by Mike judge (beavis and butt head, King of the Hill), that were like half hour behind the music docs on the stars of classic country- Willie , George jones, Jerry Lee, others? It was great

TDK - ah, that probably makes more sense. Ivor was from Govan and Donovan from Maryhill, just a couple of miles as the seagull flies across the Clyde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

JG : No - !! That sounds great !!
Of course there's the outstanding podcast Cocaine & Rhinestones about the Histories of specific Country Artists :

- it is just really well researched & presented.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:59am Brian in UK:

Has Donovan ever had a good belly laugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Little Danny:

Agreed JG, those Mike Judge country shows were really, really fun. Need to rewatch.
Avatar 🎸 11:02am TDK60:

Brian in UK - who cares, if not? / Kevin, think it was when Donovan moved south; hanging out in St. Albans and St. Ives, that he got folked up.

Rev, It was called Mike Judge presents tales from the tour bus. The Johnny Paycheck episode was really great. And actually the second season of the shoe he switched to the stars of Funk- JB, Clinton Bootsie. Both seasons are WILD!

TDK60, he always seemed to take himself so seriously.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am tim from washington:

That's great to hear your early musical influences, Joe. I think you are a couple years older than me, but I also remember youngsters did not listen to much music outside of the contemporary during the 80s.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:12am JG:

Just a random thought but when they did't speak or work together for ten years and then reunited in England on that live comeback concert/ album...well, that album is spectacular
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:13am Krys O.:

I was lucky to start listening to WCBS-FM when they started their oldies format in 1974. They gave me quite an education in early rock and pop. The Everly Brothers were a real link between country music history with their childhood radio shows and the dawn of rock.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:14am patrick321:

@Sean F. In his autobiography Keith Richards says that Don Everly taught him his 5-strong open tuning, so maybe without the Everlys there's no Street Fighting Man either.
  11:15am TerrDE:

I caught the Everlys w Paul S and Art G in their last reunion tour. Not my main musical interest, but they were great ! Magical even. RIP
  11:16am Thelma Blitz:

Please don't forget I Wonder if I Care As Much, words and music by Don Everly. It was the B side of Bye Bye Love. I played it a lot when I was 13.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It was always more than apparent that TheBeatles, Hollies, BYrdS - EVERYBODY learned TwoPart Harmony from the Everlys.
& - if you were born long ago enuff - you even heard the Everlys themselves on Radio & such.
From that - it was more than apparent that they were the Greatest TwoPart Ever. & what's more - that they had unfailing instinct for great - even indispensable Songs - & not credited enuff maybe: their Records always had fantastic playing, arrangements & production.

Hi Joe and All,

I had the privilege to see the reunion tour in 1985, I think it was, great show. In high school, I listened to the local oldies station and the Everly Brothers were on regular play.

I don’t think I’ve ever come away from a Surface Noise thinking, “Eh, Joe was a little off today,” but this morning’s show is an all-timer. Including my brief wonder/panic that someone might’ve gone and remixed Cocteau Twins’ best album. Thank you, as always, DJ.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am tim from washington:

To add to Jeffrey from West florida's thought I hear a lot of early Bee Gees in some of these songs.
  11:41am Paul in the OC:

Great tribute to Don (& Phil of course)! I did the deep-dive on these guys about 10 years back & man, ya just come away astonished at their development into the 60s & baffled at how they seriously drop off the charts after 1962. They continued to release killer tracks. Oh well, pop audience is fickle, deaf or both. Thanks Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Gaylord Fields:

Avatar 11:50am Joe McG:

@tim: I'm really fond of this first solo album, which is offbeat and lo-fi and a different side of him.
  11:51am Gerry from Miami:

@Krys O. That familial blend you speak of, not to get too messy or biological, has quite a bit to do with the shape of the mouth, throat, larynx and other associated parts involved in vocal production. These structures tend to be quite similar in siblings born to the same set of parents.
Avatar 11:53am Joe McG:

Thanks for listening and commenting, everyone, and indulging my love of the Everlys today with the songs that Don wrote. Hope you have a great week and I'll see you next time.
