Hey listeners--if you are a fan of library music, check out the book "Unusual Sounds." Unbelievably comprehensive, full of eye candy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Krys O.:

@RR63: I also wasn't familiar with his name, but was aware of some of his collaborators.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

& certainly check out Explorer's Room here on the Drummer Stream 7-10 PM which features much Library Musics.
  9:58am Glistener MW:

Really enjoying your selections and history/context, Dave - thanks for the great fill-in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Krys O.:

Hear! Hear! Really loved Asylum Choir with Leon Russell and Marc Benno. Even the early songs with David Gates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am fred:

Peter Rehberg! That's a blow. Editions Mego is an important label. And I was expecting to see him perform with KTL for a dance show (Kindertotenlieder, I think the name isn't a coincidence)
Avatar 9:59am Dave Mandl:

What Holly says. That book is essential.
  10:00am ?:

Theres a really hazy cover of this...is it sonic youth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Ben in Long Melford, UK:

Loving the show so far, Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I was looking up Masabumi Kikuchi on Bandcamp. He's got a really terrific (based on about 30 seconds of sampling) solo piano record there: redhookrecords.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 10:01am HollyRT:

"Superstar" is a perfect song. Don't think I've ever heard a bad version of it.

Good to hear ya Dave!
Avatar 10:02am HollyRT:

@glistener MW: You will not be disappointed!
  10:02am Glistener MW:

the KPM 1000 series is incredible - i luckily snagged a few at a production house job which were bafflingly being thrown-away.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Oh man, I've gotta get that book...
Avatar 10:03am Malcolm:

yeah there's a sonic yoof cover
Avatar 10:03am HollyRT:

@Glistener came across a Reddit thread by a guy who found over 1000 library music LPs in a dumpster. The envy is real
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Krys O.:

A bit of Roger Chapman in this singer for Wild Turkey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Based on projected track counts, this show is going to go past 2% rock and roll.

Avatar 10:14am Dave Mandl:

@Woods: Yes indeed.
Avatar 10:15am Dave Mandl:

@Schmaekkre: Sounded a lot like the Kinks to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am northguineahills:

I'm going to admit, I've never heard a song about Mussolini's death, even in Italian....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am DJ Guin:

Q. What do Eric Clapton and black coffee have in common?
A. Both suck with Cream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Clapton in bands hugely important to me
- as both MusicJunkie & GittarDiddler myself
...Clapton solo of more or less negative value to me
...normal to like one period of an Artist more than another - but this is like the crazy example...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am DJ Guin:

*without. damn
  10:22am wfmu listener phillip:

Welcome back to the airwaves Mr Mandl.
Avatar 10:22am Dave Mandl:

@DJ Guin: Ah, that didn't make sense to me the first time. Big Cream fan here.
  10:23am Schmaekkre:

World of Echo has been missed by discerning listeners in all corners of the globe... wait, does a globe have corners?
  10:23am wfmu listener phillip:

I miss "world of echo" when it was on Sunday nights. Yes I remember
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I was a kid when Slow Hand and Backless were out. Have fond memories of that period. Hard to split that away from the current lunacy.

Did see him on the Backless tour. Highlight: opening act -> Muddy Waters!
  10:24am Mike tp:

just hopped on board the ECHO.
  10:24am Stupid Question::

What is "library music"? I've never heard that term before. Good lord that Explorer's Room show description is quite something- but I still don't know what library music means.
  10:25am wfmu listener phillip:

Agreed. "World of echo" is missed by discerning listeners
Avatar 10:25am Dave Mandl:

@SQ: Basically, "generic" music produced for use by film and TV producers, licensed at low cost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I still wanna be in Cream & I can't help it none.
  10:26am Stupid Question::

Oh interesting, thanks mr mandl and good to have you on the airwaves
  10:28am P-90:

Prog out, Dude!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am northguineahills:

@Stupid Question: Library Music is music supposed to be made by anonymous composers for Film and TV. But there are many rekkids that are amazing in their own right.
  10:29am wfmu listener phillip:

Mister "funk" Davies did 3 fill ins this week. Next week who knows he might fill-in for himself and 4 more times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am chresti:

Stupid Q, you can "borrow" the music for your next spy series?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am chresti:

I owe ngh a coffee
  10:31am Stupid Question::

Thanks northguineahills. A whole "thing" I didn't know existed :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am northguineahills:

Flash Strap on Give the Drummer Steam plays a lot of library music on Thursdays from 7-10 EDT evening.
  10:33am P-90:

Love the idea of a DJ filling in for himself…. I’m sure it’s happened.
Avatar 10:34am Dave Mandl:

@northguneahills: I listen to the Drummer stream a hell of a lot.
  10:34am Barba Yiorgi:

Ouch forgot to tune in until Ryo Kawasaki. Thanks, God for FMU Archive. Coincidentally, I think Library Music, like all commercial music, probably was better back when people would... go to the library
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am northguineahills:

@chresti: I shouldn't drink coffee, but there's free shitty coffee in in the lobby, so, I might partake, as I got to get som stuff done today, and I actually slept.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Handy Haversack:

Hey, Barba Yiorgi! Hope all is well with you. I assume you heard the news from Kate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am northguineahills:

@Dave: I met you once at Tonic a lifetime ago. You were chill, and we talked about sounds,,,,,
Avatar 10:36am Dave Mandl:

@northguineahills: Oh good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am the Hurston moor-elf:

@P-90 The closest thing I've heard was Mark Hurst being interviewed by Station Manager Ken when Ken was filling in for Mark for his Techtonic show.
  10:38am P-90:

Sounds like breakfast at the Tarantino house
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am northguineahills:

Ergo Phizmiz, a great musician whom I met via WFMU Vicki, aka, People Like Us. (Matmos was also there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Handy Haversack:

@P-90: Like when Evan "Snake" Davies fills in for Evan "Funk" Davies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@TDK60: I was wearing a mask, so they didn't know it was me.
  10:41am Barba Yiorgi:

This last track combined perfectly with the construction noise coming through our window (said La Sharona)

Colour Sun: Nice one, Schmandl! Especially after that coffee-grinder noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am northguineahills:

Coloue Sun, new to me, and digdug!
Avatar 10:49am HollyRT:

SQ: Library music from the "golden era" (roughly 69-75) has been mined for years by DJs/crate diggers in search of interesting sample material. But a lot of the music is great on its own. Coule things to note: because this was music created to evoke a "mood" without being composed for a specific scene in a specific film--a lot of it is surprisingly experimental. 2) IN that same era, these production houses had oodles of money. So not only were they able to hire the *best* musicians, they were able to give these musicians access to very state of the art tech,i.e. the latest synths that many bands of the time would not be able to afford.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jason from Houston:

Good morning, good people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I bet guitarist Tommy Tedesco was on a bunch of library music recordings. That guy was everywhere! I used to love his studio gig column in Guitar Player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Mark Hurst:

@P-90 that was a fun show.
@Mandl another great set, thank you!
Avatar 10:54am Dave Mandl:

HollyRT knows what she's talking about.
Avatar 10:54am TDK60:

HollyRT: In case you don't know, The Give the Drummer Radio stream show, Explorers Room with DJ Flash Strap often delves into library music with much devotion. The show before last was a library one. (Thu. 7 PM.)
Avatar 10:54am Dave Mandl:

@Mark: Gracias.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Booz:

It's awesome to sluice along your neural pathways again on these airwaves, DM

Melinda, dale, and Rev Rabbit are all here. I feel like I'm home....
  10:59am Stupid Question::

Thx HollyRT. These answers are giving me even more questions :) This library music was categorized by mood so a TV or film producer could search by mood?!? How specific/detailed/arcane would that get I wonder.
  11:00am Santos L Halper:

What a nice surprise to hear you Mr. M. Been enjoying the whole show, thanks!
Avatar 11:01am Dave Mandl:

@Santos: Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Krys O.:

Rough Mix is superb and I need to revisit it.

S.Q. Some library album titles were named for certain themes or sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Stupid Question: Just scroll through this, it's kinda of crazy -> www.apmmusic.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am sphere:

@ Stupid Question - usually library music titles are pretty vague and connecting the song to the mood is pretty tough, IMHO
Avatar 11:03am TDK60:

Sphere- I suppose one would have to listen to the album to hear if they could use it. Perhaps.
  11:03am morphe':

Dave Mandl - Tony Coulter - Obi Wan Kenobie ... names not heard too often in too long a time !!!!!!!! One could add Chris T...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am melinda:

@Rabbit I'd go for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Krys O.:

All right!!!!!
  11:04am Barba Yiorgi:

Danger Man!! yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am dale:

danger man - the theme song to a wvkr deejay's show.
Avatar 11:05am TDK60:

Yeah, Rough Mix a fine LP. || Morphe, how goes in dry, old Madrid?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am sphere:

@ TDK60 - I figure that the composer would just learn each library music producer's language and go from there.
Avatar 11:05am Dave Mandl:

This soundtrack music is so great.
  11:06am Robbo:

Danger Man!

This soundtrack has a very Prisoner feel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Krys O.:

Patrick McGoohan's shows had the coolest music, thought I'd have to check out the theme from Rafferty to confirm that.
Avatar 11:06am TDK60:

Sphere, I'm not sure. I'm still a sophomore over in Flash's music appreciation class. I often goof off and get odd looks from the DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am sphere:

No wonder it had a Prisoner feel, given that it was for Secret Agent.
  11:08am Barba Yiorgi:

I have a great Danger Man version by The Bob Leaper Orchestra, actually sounds more like the Secret Agent TV theme that I remember, same harpsichord sound

@SQ--sometimes organized by "mood," sometimes by genre, or even instrumentation. Here are a few representative album titles from KPM 1000 (if you have Spotify, do a search for KPM and then click albums--there are over a hundred):
"Flamboyant Themes"
"Happy Rainbows"
"Brass plus Moog"
Jingles"
"Tender Emotions"
"Action World"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Booz:

I have no Rehberg stories or anything, just loved the label. I predict an hour-long Ambarchi cut during Bryce's show.
  11:33am Mike W.:

Hey it’s Dave Mandl from twitter! The sounds abound, zounds!

Hey Dave, guess where I’m standing. #inafield
  11:34am maxP:

sincere thanks Dave
  11:35am Mike W.:

The goal is not to top JAAM, but to tower alongside it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am northguineahills:

My two Rehberg stories involve him playing at Tonic (NYC) w/ maybe 20 people there, and then at Mutek in Montreal w/ 50 people. Both shows were amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am northguineahills:

and, Mike W is here!

ok, gotta an interview to prep for, so, I gotta bounce in a hot moment.
  11:38am Andres:

Hey, NGH! I've lost the michelada recipe you posted a little while back. Would you mind sharing it again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Booz:

@northguineahills Very cool. Still miss Tonic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am northguineahills:

@Booz: Tonic was my home. I literarally studied for grad school and graded my students' papers there (and djed, played live, and my friends got me for free, and I drank for free....

Avatar 11:42am HollyRT:

God, the mood of this song absolutely *epitomizes* the mid-70s (the best mood)
Avatar 11:44am Dave Mandl:

@HollyRT: And with lyrics by Kurt Vonnegut.
Avatar 11:44am Dave Mandl:

@rw: Very nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am sphere:

I get the impression that the 70s were all about self-titled albums.
Avatar 11:45am HollyRT:

@Dave Oh! Cool
Avatar 11:46am Dave Mandl:

@HollyRT: They set some words from one of his novels to music. He was totally into it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am dale:

now i wanna hear some amazing blondel.
  11:48am Mike W.:

Dave, it’s an anonymous field of grass, weeds and insects on the Eastern Seabored.

NYC never got over the loss of Tonic (as far as place goes).

I have a Peter Rehberg story from Vienna but, it wasn’t his fault. Quietly (in a sense) one of this century’s most important music figures. RIP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Handy Haversack:

Damn. Passed out again. Dave, thanks so much. What I was conscious for was great. And the rest is in my brain now.
Avatar 11:48am HollyRT:

Interesting. Funny because THIS WEEK I've been listening to two songs a lot that also lifter lyrics verbatim (but by poets)

Fibonaccis--Ordinary Women (lyrics by Wallace Stevens)
Electrelane--The Valleys (lyrics by Siegfried Sassoon)
