Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Listener comments!

Avatar 🎭 7:00pm Listener Gregory:

Just unpacked the car from a day trip and realized I am just in time for you-know-what.
The stream before the show is making me wonder whether it would be possible to do a total yodeling Acid Jazz Hands.
Avatar 🎭 7:01pm Listener Gregory:

Whoops, Edwin Drood is half the volume of the prior stream... if that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm doctorjazz:

Hi all!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:03pm WR:

Hi AJH aficionados, I'm am a tried and true failure at yodeling.

Yes, LG, and seems half the volume of another stream, yes I am double streaming.
Avatar 🎭 7:06pm Listener Gregory:

For the record, I would prefer to be beaten 1 to the bar. Or less, if possible.
Howdy, @doctorj!
Avatar 🎭 7:07pm Listener Gregory:

And @AR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm doctorjazz:

Hi, LG and WR!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:09pm diciassette:

Ahoy BB, DJ, LG, and WR (in alphabetical order!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi everyone :D
Avatar 🎭 7:13pm Listener Gregory:

AR = WR, of course.
Avatar 🎭 7:14pm Listener Gregory:

You’ll find that things are worthwhile… if you’ll just smile.
Avatar 🎭 7:15pm Listener Gregory:

Someone stopped smiling for a second!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Bronwyn Bishop:

living in terror of another DJ coming down the hall and catching me playing this
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm diciassette:

You can always bar the door and laugh maniacally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm doctorjazz:

I think Billy Jam KNOWS...
Avatar 🎭 7:22pm Listener Gregory:

Interestingly, the Victor Hugo novel behind this is superb, but the Dickens novel behind Edwin Drood is clearly his weakest. A musical sending it up is called for.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm diciassette:

"The failure of the musical was so total that it compelled the Nederlander Organization to finally sell the beloved but flop-prone Mark Hellinger Theatre to the Times Square Church, which still owns it.[2]"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Every time I pass the Times Square Church and I'm with someone I tell them the tale of the Mark Hellinger
Avatar 🎭 7:44pm Listener Gregory:

The film Grand Hotel is a true classic. Apparently, this is where Greta Garbo intones, "I want to be alone!" (for those over 40 who remember such things).
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm diciassette:

Filichia makes a pretty good joke in the table of contents when he lists the biggest hit of 1988-89 as "My Marriage to Ernest Borgnine," which turns out to be a blank page in Ethel Merman's biography!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm diciassette:

*auto
Avatar 🎭 7:51pm Listener Gregory:

I hope this has a happy ending (Miss Saigon).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: I was so confused by that at first but then I LOL'd
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: Of course, it ends with everyone holding hands under a rainbow ;)
Avatar 🎭 7:56pm Listener Gregory:

This version of the song does not top the Fred Astaire version, IMHO. Fortunately, the 1993 Broadway audiences probably didn't know/remember that. His performance is much livelier.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:04pm WR:

I revere Chita Rivera, love the Kiss of the Spider Woman movie, but this Gimme Love is not connecting for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I'll take "movies that were absolutely not screaming for a musical adaptation" for $500 alex
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:06pm diciassette:

Well, it's time for my occasional Bernadette Lazzara fainting spell
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:06pm diciassette:

Martin Short sounds pretty tall in this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm melinda:

@Bronwyn haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I'm surprised by how competent his singing is
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:07pm diciassette:

He's a professional chameleon!
Avatar 🎭 8:08pm Listener Gregory:

Short used to do musical send-ups on the Letterman show pretty regularly (usually pretty funny). I think if you subtracted the send-up, he might have been able to do the musical on its own.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:09pm diciassette:

I saw a Johnny Carson clip where he sat next to Bette Davis and started turning into her
Avatar 🎭 8:10pm TonyR:

I give up. Been trying to say that last week, the music was low and mic hot (but apparently normal, compared to next show on Drummer stream). Looks like this week started out low, also, but I wasn't here at 7 tonight.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:12pm diciassette:

As long as the mic/line are reasonably together I'm in! I have volume knob on the hifi
Avatar 🎭 8:12pm Listener Gregory:

@BB, I don't see the Nick & Nora play in the playlist. I loved the old movies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm melinda:

I graduated from college in 1994. The year of the white bronco slow chase.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm diciassette:

In 1994 I quit smoking for lent
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm WR:

@LG, I think it is the song from Musicality of Strouse
Avatar 🎭 8:14pm TonyR:

Yeah it was all good seated at the computer, not so good cast to the big speakers... In the bedroom.
Avatar 🎭 8:15pm Listener Gregory:

@WR, yikes! Oh, the song was originally in a failed Nick 'n' Nora musical and then got put into the Strouse collection? That would make sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Bronwyn Bishop:

to elaborate on what irritates me about the added dialogue here- ashman's lyrics PERFECTLY illustrate the fact that they're falling in love, we don't need a bunch of dialogue to help it along
Avatar 🎭 8:16pm Listener Gregory:

Note to soundtrack producers: Kindly avoid "a whole schmegeggy!"
Avatar 🎭 8:24pm Listener Gregory:

In retrospect, "Teach me how to shimmy" makes me long for a whole schmegeggy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I think he said "wanted my pool, my dose of fame" but it really sounds like he says "wanted my pool, my dorsal fin"
Avatar 🎭 8:26pm TonyR:

There be dragons!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm diciassette:

Million dollar sediment!
Avatar 🎭 8:29pm Listener Gregory:

Dish the dirt!
Avatar 🎭 8:37pm Listener Gregory:

The song from Big is confusing me: standard pop song structure orchestrated by Mozart? With dialogue?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm diciassette:

We had it coming!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: Yeah I have no idea what the usually brilliant David Shire was going for there
Avatar 🎭 8:45pm Listener Gregory:

How did Jim Steinman get demoted from hit songwriter to only the lyricist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Lord Lloyd Webber collaborates on music with no man!
Avatar 🎭 8:46pm Listener Gregory:

Did you know that Lloyd Webber used to be Lloyd-Webber, but the House of Lords does not permit hyphenated names, do he had to change it? This is true; or so I read in the British press once.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:47pm diciassette:

I believe everything I read in the Daily Mail
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm diciassette:

Paul Simon should be on-deck.. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Closing out with the 1998-1999 flop because I don't have time to play both it and its corresponding hit, and I think the hit would make a nice opening for next week's show
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm diciassette:

Brava! Thank you, Bronwyn B
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thank YOU diciassette (and everyone)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:01pm WR:

I just bought The Capeman. It became an earworm from when you played something from it before.

Thank you Bronwyn! Laters drummer streamers!
Avatar 🎭 9:02pm Listener Gregory:

Thanks, Bronwyn! I didn't see the ending coming. It crept up on me.
