Welcome - this is "Come To The Sunshine" - I am your DJ host, Andrew Sandoval
  2:30am
David in California:

Will you be spotlighting an artist this morning?
Avatar 2:43am
cometothesunshine:

This is an airing of the show one special with singles, Gary Lewis & a Monkees spotlight
  2:46am
David in California:

I look forward to hearing it.

Thanks!

How did you choose Utica Club as your first song on the first show?

Hi, Creature boy!

👋
Avatar 3:10am
cometothesunshine:

David - I always felt that record was a gateway to 1,000 other obscurities.
Avatar 3:11am
cometothesunshine:

Doing this show changed how I bought and listened to records
  3:13am
David in California:

What did you look for in records after you started doing the show?
Avatar 3:13am
cometothesunshine:

When my Mom used too see TBA or To Be Announced in the TV Guide, she thought it was a religious program.
Avatar 3:15am
cometothesunshine:

David - I got an ear for grouping things and kinda spotting potential 45's for the first part of the show in a quick, 15 sec needle drop. I also just started listening to everything, whether I had heard of it or not. You never know where you will find a surprise.
  3:17am
David in California:

Of the records you hadn't heard of, about what percentage did you wind up using on the program?
Avatar 3:18am
cometothesunshine:

About 65-70%
Avatar 3:18am
cometothesunshine:

I kind have become all about finding things I have never heard of.
  3:25am
David in California:

That approach makes your program very different from the nostalgia oriented 60's shows that only play familiar songs.
Avatar 3:27am
cometothesunshine:

I am sure it holds it back in some ways, but it also pushes things forward a bit.
Avatar 3:27am
cometothesunshine:

I hope that someone will hear a song for the first time that will stick with them.
  3:30am
Simon in London:

Morning, Andrew, from a sunshiny London! Listening to this is a great accompaniment to breakfast!
Out of all the no-hit/ one-hit wonders you've picked up, have you ever found one that you thought, "This should have been a massive hit! They should have been huge!"...?
Keep doing what you are doing, and good luck with the Monkees tour!

Simon
  3:30am
David in California:

I thnk your approach fits in well at WFMU, where I am hearing a lot of music I've never heard before.

Good Paulo. As Krys said, still dark in NJ. First signs of light should start appearing in about 20 minutes
Avatar 4:48am
Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

I think my memory of watching The Monkees must be from the early to mid '70s. It was on TV constantly through the school holidays. Also I remember it in colour, and we only had a black and white TV until about 1973
Avatar 4:49am
Ivan from Woodbridge:

Welcome to the slot cometothesunshine.
Avatar 4:50am
cometothesunshine:

Kevin - the 60s BBC broadcasts were in monochrome. So you basically saw the colour debut in the 70s
Avatar 4:51am
cometothesunshine:

It is an interesting slot, Ivan!
Avatar 4:51am
Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

Yes, Google tells me it was on the BBC in 1969, if not before, but I was 4 at the time and if I saw it then I don't remember
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am
David (in London):

I remember watching colour Monkees in the 70s and wondering why everyone wasn't driving around in a Monkeemobile.
Avatar 4:53am
cometothesunshine:

The orig UK run of the series was Jan 1 67 - about March 68
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54am
David (in London):

The Monkeemobile was up there with the Pink Panther's car, the Adam West Batmobile and the two amazing cars from Gerry Anderson's UFO. It's been a bit of an automotive disappointment from there on in really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55am
Krys O.:

I watched the Monkees second season 67-68 with my brother. I was 4-5 years old then. Left a lifelong impression.
Avatar 4:56am
Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

Interesting Andrew, thanks. David (iL), I mostly remember being struck by how bright and sunny and fantastic California looked. Not at all like the UK (except maybe for the long hot summer of '76)
Avatar 4:56am
cometothesunshine:

That's how they get you, Krys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am

Loving all this monkey business! I also love the Polyphonic spree's version of the Porpoise song such a great tune.
Avatar 4:57am

I agree, Billy L
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59am

The Monkees were in heavy syndication on MuchMusic in Canada, I never really got it but I dug the musical elements and then I saw Head and it all made sense.
