I just got to the point in Thompson's book where Fairport decided they'd fire Sandy Denny and recognized that it would be impossible to replace her.
Avatar 11:05am Bob Brainen:

Hey listener Rey! Glad to hear it.
Avatar 11:06am Bob Brainen:

Hey (Mr) Bill!
Avatar 11:07am Bob Brainen:

Joe M, that was a shocker!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Uncle Michael:

I'm feeling pretty good, Bob. I just took the walker from the garage around to the walk-in basement door so I can do some computery things down here in the studio while listening to your show.
Avatar 11:08am Bob Brainen:

Uncle Michael, glad to hear it!

This song by Oregon sounds like it could have been the opening theme to a 1970s independent film

Belated good morning Bob, Doc Rock + fellow listeners. I got carried away by a book I’ve been reading and lost track of time.
Avatar 11:24am Bob Brainen:

Hey Jeff!
Avatar 11:25am Bob Brainen:

I just started Chris Hillman's book.
Just finished Richard Thompson's book prior to that.
What is anyone else reading?

Hi Bob and brainiacs!
Avatar 11:27am Bob Brainen:

Hi chresti!
  11:30am Jeff:

Bob, I read (and enjoyed) both those books. Right now (when I’m not listening to your show), I’m reading Feline Philosophy / Cats and the Meaning of Life by John Gray 😽
Avatar 11:30am (Mr) Bill:

I’m reading Grace Paley’s collected short stories. Highly recommend that you don’t make the same mistake I did by waiting almost two-thirds of a century to discover her.
Avatar 11:34am Bob Brainen:

Jeff & (Mr) Bill, I will look into those.
  11:34am chresti:

My favorite! shorty Long!
  11:36am dan:

Is this the first version of the eventual Mitch Ryder hit?
Avatar 11:37am Bob Brainen:

It is, dan. Both from Detroit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am annie:

Avatar 11:59am Bob Brainen:

Avatar 12:05pm wmfromdumont:

The Irving Fields Trio's Bagels & Bongos is a personal fave.
Avatar 12:07pm Andrew in Toronto:

  12:09pm Jeff:

I saw M’Boom once or twice. Max, Freddie Waits, Joe Chambers + more. They were great!
Avatar 12:15pm Bob Brainen:

I would have loved to have caught them, Jeff!
There's a couple of great youtube performances, one from the Soul TV show.
Avatar 12:17pm Bob Brainen:

There was an article on drummer/percussionist Roy Brooks in yesterday's Times. There's an archival release coming out.
Avatar 12:19pm wmfromdumont:

Warren Smith had a really interesting career. Shows up in unexpected places.
  12:19pm Jeff:

Will check it out, Bob!
Avatar 12:21pm Bob Brainen:

wm, I bet. Warren Smith is on quite a few Strata East albums.
Avatar 12:24pm wmfromdumont:

He did a lot of session work in NYC. Pearls Before Swine, The Fugs, Earth Opera. Lots of arranging as well.
Avatar 12:25pm Bob Brainen:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm doctorjazz:

Hi all! Love this Venuti/Lang-Rollini on Bass sax? Another fav!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm doctorjazz:

Lang has the oddest time for a guitarist to my ears...
Avatar 12:27pm Bob Brainen:

doctorjazz, you are correct sir, bass sax & vibes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

Bob, I swear...you're my cousin from another grandmother.
  12:30pm dan:

My idea of a Fleetwood Mac reunion is Fleetwood, Buckingham, the McVies, Rick Vito and Jeremy Spencer. The setlist is a mixture of all eras.
  12:31pm dan:

And Bekka Bramlett in place of Stevie Nicks.
  12:38pm Robbie White:

Colin Moulding never got enough credit in XTC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

Till now I'd only heard the title track from the Colin Moulding. Thanks, Bob.
Avatar 12:41pm Bob Brainen:

Hey Robbie!
  12:41pm gene sculatti:

This tune has a Kantner riff (from 'Let Me In') in it
  12:41pm gene sculatti:

'Pretty Girl Why'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Uncle Michael:

Stills deserves more credit as a songwriter.

Digging this Cat Mother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm doctorjazz:

I remember Cat Mother's Track in A got some traction on FM radio back in the day-really liked that track (but haven't heard it in so long all I remember is a cowbell intro...)
  12:50pm dan:

Klezmer Jazz
  12:51pm Gerry from Miami:

@doctorjazz. I believe the song you are referring to had a title like "Gimme That Old-time Rock and Roll" or something like that.
  12:55pm Gerry from Miami:

@doctorjazz It was "Good Old Rock and Roll." Reached #21 in the summer of 1969.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm doctorjazz:

Hey, UM, how was the return to action show? I Couldn't stay long, just caught the beginning (but the "crashed my bicycle" refrain from the Linnell was stuck in my head the rest of the day). Will check out the archive. (Caught Joel Forrester in an outdoor solo piano show at Bryant Park yesterday, an old fan of his, much fun).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm doctorjazz:

@Gerry, thanks, quill check that out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm doctorjazz:

*will check...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Uncle Michael:

I can't claim a glorious return, but it was good to be back on the saddle.
  1:07pm Todd E:

Larry Packer played with The Band at the Last Waltz, and plays with a bunch of folks around Woodstock, NY. He led and played with band at my niece's wedding up that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Uncle Michael:

I wonder if the Woodstock Packers are related to the Green Bay Packers.
Avatar 1:15pm Bob Brainen:

Todd E-very cool!
Avatar 1:40pm Tom Tom Browne:

This is wild!
  1:43pm Eugene Bentley:

Hello Bob. Greetings from Iowa.
  1:47pm Jeff:

I used to see Charlie Chin, from time to time, in the Village in the ‘70s. He was in Cat Mother and also knew Steve Stills when Steve was living in the Village (prior to Springfield days). Steve asked Charlie to record some banjo and used it on Bluebird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm doctorjazz:

Love this (Ben Goldberg is involved in so many great sessions/projects...)
Avatar 1:55pm Andrew in Toronto:

Thanks again for a great show!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Bob!
  1:55pm Jeff:

Thanks Bob!
  1:56pm Eugene Bentley:

Tam Lin a great way to kick off the show!
  1:56pm dan:

Great show Bob
  1:57pm Listener Robert:

It's been swell. Let's keep it that way, rather than swollen. Although Jan Turkenburg makes Zwolle sound good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm annie:

what a joy, today's show has been! thanks bob!
  1:59pm Listener Robert:

That's the one line Clint Eastwood used as both cowboy and cop: "Swell." But I mean it unironically.
Avatar 2:00pm wmfromdumont:

Great show Bob!
  2:00pm chresti:

Thanks Bob!
