Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

  2:03pm Allan Chase:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Dave Sewelson:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm fred:

Any date for hosting guests in your secret bunker?
  2:06pm DavidJ:

Hi all. Who on piano?
  2:07pm Allan Chase:

Uri Caine-p, Cecil McBee-b, Rashied Ali-d 9/11/2000
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Dave Sewelson:

fred I think by the fall..but we may keep the zoom for folks that don't come to Brooklyn...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm fred:

Dave, sounds like something good coming out of this mess, more people eligible...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm WR:

Hello drummer streamers and esteemed host Dave Sewelson and special guest Allan Chase. Gotta run some errands via the subway. Will be listening to the episode I missed last week. Will catch this one from the archive. Laters all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Dave Sewelson:

hope you got a token WR....

Avatar 2:27pm northguineahills:

Here, there, and nowhere! Saw Daniel Carter play on N 12th St on the sidewalk last Sunday.
Avatar 2:29pm northguineahills:

(also, I played a music fest b/tn New Paltz and Kingston, upstate NY. I found a piano harp from the 30s in a barn, and played it w/ dessicated sunflower stalks and a knife, I came up w/ no instruments)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm fred:

@ngh: are you still in the NYC area?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Dave Sewelson:

wow ngh...
Avatar 2:32pm Allan Chase:

yes, wow. would love to have heard that.
Avatar 2:46pm northguineahills:

I just got back to Orlando 2 days ago.

(my playing was relayed from a contact mic while the percussionist relayed through fx. Also, there was ambient bleeps and blops as avant dancers performed in front of projections in front of the other barn. Also, deep woods multimedia installations and on the lake.)
Avatar 2:48pm northguineahills:

I wish I could have seen Allan live. After my 16 years in Brooklyn, I probably saw him, as I realize we musician friends in common.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm fred:

So you're back to being the station's Florida man, known for doing cool stuff (it's WFMU, not going with the cliché here)
Avatar 2:57pm northguineahills:

I missed volunteering at the mothership as my friend got into a fight w/ his missus and needed space (he just spent a month w/ her w/ family in Turkey), so, I didn't sleep the night before I was supposed to me Scott at Monty Hall).

Apparently, fred, I suppose so. (first time I played live in 3 years).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm fred:

@ngh: I guess Orlando is not primarily known for its experimental music scene, though there must be one
  3:01pm chresti:

Hi free world!
Avatar 3:01pm Allan Chase:

Orlando must miss Sam Rivers! I think he added something special to the scene there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Dave Sewelson:

chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Dave Sewelson:

go go ngh!
Avatar 3:15pm northguineahills:

@Allan: I first saw Sam Rivers when I was 18 (William Parker and Mathew Shipp also played) In Orlando (I was in Gainesville at the time).. It was my Damascene moment, that got me out my indie rock ghetto in my head, and w/in two years, started to have the confidence to play live, and I discovered WFMU, etc, so..it was a formative moment.

Yes, there is an experimental scene here, but considering the population, it's rather small....
Avatar 3:20pm northguineahills:

bienvenidos, chresti!
Avatar 3:21pm northguineahills:

@Allan: Long live Rivbea Studios!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm fred:

I think Ken and his Party Girls would approve of these tendencies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm fred:

@ngh: in my experience, experimental scenes are like anarchist unions (or NME genres): one you get past double digits, a split is overdue. Double digits is already a strain
  3:32pm Jim Ryan:

Very sweet Bari duet. Thank you Gentlemen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Dave Sewelson:

thanks Jim...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm fred:

Sadly, musicians from central Asia are banned here with no end in sight. Indian musicians are still allowed, so I got some tickets for these shows
Avatar 3:42pm Allan Chase:

Thank you, Jim!
Avatar 3:42pm northguineahills:

@fred: w/ my musical scenes, I'm nothing and everything, all one of the same.

Tom Cora!
Avatar 4:06pm Allan Chase:

Scholars will note that one note of "Phoenix" is different from composer Jimmy Giuffre's version!
Avatar 4:07pm Allan Chase:

RIP my friends Tom Cora (1953-1998) and Janet Grice (1956-2020).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm fred:

Sadly, I never got to see either. I've heard Catherine Jauniaux many times though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm fred:

So "Short will be good" is the official tite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm fred:

You guys master it, but latency is why I annoy Dave about getting people in his bunker (I'll stop now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Gina Bacon:
