A lack of civility, you say? Well I got held up at knifepoint recently - on a quiety, leafy street no less
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm sphere:

actually, I have seen zero rudeness personally, not even on the planes that I took to Charleston via Charlotte to DC round trip.
4:07pm Small biz owner in MA:

Yup.. cafe owner here in a tiny rural tourist town.. lots of rude pushy customers, not just to staff but each other. People cursing each other out while waiting on line to get coffee 😒

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Michael 98145:

  4:10pm chresti:

I try to avoid places with rude people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm tim from washington:

Oh man, I got the brunt of this jerk's uncivility last week on a plane ride from Detroit to Seattle. I was flying with my 5 yr old daughter and almost 2 yr old son who was riding on my lap. My flight had been switched by the airline so that my daughter and my seat now straddled the aisle. After I boarded, we were sitting with my kids in the row of one of our seats. This dude who was with his family barked at the that we were in his seats and to get out. I asked if we could switch so that my daughter and I could sit together. Again, I was told to get out.

Some kind people let us switch with them so we were in front of the dude. I turned around to apologize for any misunderstanding. The dude then told me several times to shut up and turn around.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...then - maybe *some* of us have felt we should be more humane because of them, in fact...
Drumpf era perhaps helped people decide if they're Elves or Orcs for sure...
Nice with the Jimi, Ms. Jones...
Avatar 4:11pm Monica:

headcleaner - yikes... small biz owner :(... kev, RevRab, Sphere, tim... yup...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Handy Haversack:

I mainly notice that the subtle art of accommodating others has disappeared from the sidewalks, the series of small adjustments one makes to pace and angle to acknowledge a shared space. These work much less well when only one party is using them.

Or maybe I have just grown old and ugly enough that the 20-30-years-olds who rule the sidewalks just can't see me?
  4:12pm headcleaner:

Right here in the Big Apples, Marco - the old days are back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Michael 98145:

iDJT certainly was a catalyst

@Tim WTF?! While you're with your kids no less. What a piece of shit coward that guy is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Michael 98145:

@HH, i get a small pleasure from slamming into the entitled on the sidewalk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Handy - but have we always done it for the elderly? I suggest we are better...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good gravy, tim, that sounds horrible! May that guy spend eternity standing in line with people poking him from all sides and the line never moves.
Avatar 4:13pm Marco Esquandolas:

I'm in Kentucky. There are a lot of supporters of orange man here. It does seem that there are a lot of people out just looking for a fight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Handy Haversack:

Cheeebus, Tim! Yeah, it seems the ability to negotiate any level of human contact -- especially when there's even a WHIFF of competing for limited resources -- has been very badly degraded by ... SOMEthing, I guess.

Ugh, headcleaner, that sucks. It's been 10-ish years since I had anything like that go down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm tim from washington:

@Marco - yeah! The flight attendant came in during the middle of all this and I was scared were were going to be booted even though I was keeping calm but was getting pretty worried.

But is incivility worse than it was? Hard to say. And when?

The method of capitalism is always to turn all against all so that labor can never come together to demand human treatment from capital. So all is inculcated as competition, as a resource that goes only to the strong. And everyone else is out to get it.

So ... when would it have been better? I'd say things have been pretty bad these last five hundred years and more, depending on where you are and how visible the victims of incivility and worse are for that time and place. And they don't seem to be getting any righter in much of a hurry.

Though maybe it's a bit heavy for a Friday afternoon. Oh, it's too hot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Michael 98145:

That seems to be an unusual larg number of rude customers to constantly being rude at one restaurant, you know what they say, there's two sides to a coin. It just might be that it's one of those restaurant that's so bad that they keep on eliciting the worse from people. Haven't anyone ever known such an establishment.

Hey, Chris! You in CT or BK?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Under Crapitalism ...rather than question the Ladder
- always kick down...
Granted - Genghis Khan wasn't civil - nor Roman slavers...
I will take what Terence McKenna spoke about & go further than 500 years back to Homo sapiens leaving the woods & forests & getting Patriarchal & needed Armies & all the rest... The idea that our deep history wasn't recorded &/or has been repressed... One thinks of the 1940s characterized by some National identity that unified (I wonder out loud why the pandemic response was never like that...) - & the PostWar 1950s boom still having that... but of course, mostly for affluent white males... & then - since the 1970s, productivity has increased while wages have remained utterly stagnant... So we still have the American Dream but it's increasingly a Nightmare that no one can afford... WWII followed the Depression. Take the Money out - & the social benevolence follows...

...I would say that - as someone who would identify as Rawker (itself an aspiration, to be charitable towards myself) - I am an interesting mix of arrogance & ideals... I also consider myself a Creative by temperament. Many things I consider simply not my purpose in life.
...Is it possible to be a narcissist & have little confidence? (Maybe - it's a prerequisite...)
I would say I used to be a lot ruder & more arrogant. Old age & the vagaries of the 21st Centry have beaten a lot of that out of me. So even those haven't been useless...

The 1981 medley really hit home b/c I was 13, and my mom had just started dating after my father's death two years prior. She found a disco on Long Island and went once a week, and suddenly started listening to all that godawful disco (I was 13 so probably at my The Who phase). I like disco now, but every song in that medley brought me right back there .

Late to todays show, apologies x
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Carmichael:

I was in the military in '81, overseas and away from any American music. When I got out, I was a little astonished at the radio back home. I went from Frampton, Allmans, Who, to Tears for Fears, Michael Jackson and Pet Shop Boys. I think I just now recovered. Thank heavens for Mdou Moctar.

Richy, born there; have lived there most of my life… could possibly never look back at this point. Time will tell…

Monica, I always feel so damn lucky to hear your shows. Thank you thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I kinda cheated - I had an older brother with 1,000s of albums & stuff - & I got spoon-feed masses of Rawk. So I knew about Punk as Music if not as a DIY life. On my own - I obsessed over TheBeatles & EarlyWho for example completely out of temporal context...
Now with online streaming above all WFMU - I feel it's an unprecedented era for access & listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Richy4619:

@Chris in the redwoods, I'm torn. It's my true love. I just can't find a community to thrive in here...

I hear you brother Richy.

I was speaking 🗣️ with a friend about M&Ms which I haven't had in a long time. I remembered when I do eat M&Ms I segregate them by colors, and eat all of one color before proceeding to a different color and so on. Any one else do this? Just curious.
