Carmichael, I often yearn for a Slartibartfast ethics. I want someone around to leave a note telling me which would probably be the best button to press.

In the case of the forecast, it's the Stay Inside button, I have to imagine.

I was just reading about the history of apples in California. I'll just leave that here.

Handy Haversack, sitting here, avoiding the outside. Sun up and shiny in these parts of town. Stay cool.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Krys O.:

@Handy: I recall hearing that apple cider was preferred over water in the 19th century. Drinking untreated water could result in various diseases.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Handy Haversack:

I am reading a history of cider, so I have a lot to say about it, Krys! But yes, cider was a massively present drink in colonizing and expanding United States, and Prohibition and then the mechanization and industrialization of food production really did a number on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@The Oscar: I recall that Sony & Phillips formed an alliance to counter the DVD format that Toshiba & Warner were foisting. Don't ask me who won though. I blotted it out of my memory of working at a Laserdisc distributor. I still have dozens of LDs.

@Krys O Not sure if it's the same thing, but I do remember the ill-fated DIVX format, which I believe were single-use disposable "rental" DVDs. A staggeringly bad idea that I can't believe made it to stores.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Krys O.:

@The Oscar: " In the same year, two new optical disc storage formats were being developed. One was the Multimedia Compact Disc (MMCD), backed by Philips and Sony (developers of the CD and CD-i), and the other was the Super Density (SD) disc, supported by Toshiba, Time Warner, Matsushita Electric, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Pioneer, Thomson, and JVC. By the time of the press launches for both formats in January 1995, the MMCD nomenclature had been dropped, and Philips and Sony were referring to their format as Digital Video Disc (DVD).[14][15] The Super Density logo would later be reused in Secure Digital."

Swag For Life Member 3:37pm bk845:

Ok, so that whole "turn the heat on" thing was for cars that were prone to overheating (back in the 70s). The hyopthesis was that you could help keep the engine cooler by running the interior heat, which would blow cooler air over the heater core.
  3:38pm jan:

Editing videos to this program- what a sound track. Loved the 1st set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Carmichael:

70s cars used a 2nd radiator as the heater. So the idea was, if your car runs hot, turn the heat on to double cool the engine. And make you hotter ...

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Handy Haversack:

Scott, we're heading back to the Sedgwick/Penobscot/Blue Hill area for the first week of September!
Avatar 4:52pm βrian:

Ok, Handy. Have you a recipe to make use of fresh peach juice? I'm thinking light rum ...
Swag For Life Member 4:53pm bk845:

Where is the cemetery in Camden? I will be up there in a few weeks and will look for it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:54pm I k e:

@chresti, so the question would be: is it worse to fight your way out of L.A. traffic on the way to SF, or to fight your way through CT and Boston-area traffic on the way to Maine? Probably a tough call.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Handy Haversack:

Hmm, βrian, I got nothing, er, handy, but I'd just say to balance if possible: some sour (lemon? lime? dry vermouth?), some bitter if you have it (Campari, Suze?), and maybe some soda since peach juice is pretty viscous? Sounds like a nice thing to have in a Collins glass. 2 oz. rum, 1 oz. peach, .5 oz. lime, .5 oz Campari, ice, top with soda?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Handy Haversack:

This is nice. I have been to Eigg. I have been inside both the Murder Cave and the Cathedral Cave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm chresti:

I k e, we usually bypass metro LA by way of Pasadena to get to the 5, the faster, smelly route.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm chresti:

*timing is everything.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Handy Haversack:

Eigg went fully cooperative, bought back all the land, and is self-sufficient from the mainland except for grain (or was so when I was there in 2009).

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:08pm steveo:

I dare say, sir, that you are in the zone
Avatar 5:08pm Blast-Off-Girl:

Have you drove through highway 99? It's an interesting route and you pass by these small towns.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Is work coming along on the high speed rail between LA & SF? I imagine that would be a sweet ride, if it comes to fruition.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Handy Haversack:

That was the Full Haversack: fourth new clicky-star in a row!
  5:09pm Tony:

I actually prefer taking 99 over I-5. Much of it is 3 lanes so it is easier to pass all the trucks. But you go through cities so you risk getting stuck in traffic in somewhere like Fresno.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm chresti:

Yes! We take that when the 5 is jammed.
Avatar 5:09pm Blast-Off-Girl:

I thought those plans got derailed; no pun intended.
  5:10pm yippie:

this silver apples makes me want some purple pomegranates
Avatar 5:10pm Blast-Off-Girl:

99 just takes a bit longer, but it's more preferable during a busy holiday weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm ChukAmok:

High Speed rail would be a godsend anywhere in this country. The Amtrak from LA to SF is a slow journey up the coast watching everyone else have fun in the sun, sea, and sand.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:11pm steveo:

At least if you get stuck in Fresno, you can write a song about it
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:11pm I k e:

@Handy, I'm going to NH soon but will probably take the Merritt to I-91 instead. Going via the Taconic seems like it would add too much mileage, no? The Taconic *is* beautiful though, and there's so much less traffic. Plus good 90.1 reception last time I was there!
  5:12pm Tony:

@Steveo, I think you mean Bakersfield!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm chresti:

Ken, unfortunately, they ran into trouble with some cities, like Fresno, and ran out of $$$$$. I always thought the big fat median on the 5 would be perfect for a bullet train
Avatar 5:15pm Blast-Off-Girl:

you can write a song about any of those central valley towns
Avatar 5:15pm Blast-Off-Girl:

they're all mostly prison towns
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:16pm steveo:

We stopped in a weird/good little non-chain fast food place in Porterville, once, in between the two
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Handy Haversack:

Merritt is pretty, too. I just never trust traffic on any CT route.

Can you imagine, ChukAmok? Rail to DC from NYC is a total joke, and I assume that obtains all they way north and east as well.
  5:17pm Tony:

Regarding high speed rail, the central valley part is easy since it is all flat. The problem is trying to build it over the mountains at either end to LA and the Bay Area.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm steveo:

Coleman's Delight it was called
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:19pm I k e:

The Googs says Taconic to Mass Pike adds ~88 miles. Seems like a lot but maybe it’s worth it psychologically to avoid CT entirely? True that CT can be brutal.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:22pm steveo:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:31pm I k e:

@steveo, for Maine I'd imagine so. For the NE part of NH I'm headed to, it's still a bit weird, but it's worth the extra 10-20 miles. I-91 in VT is gorgeous and often completely empty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...here in North NewEngalnd - they always say there's no money for functional mass transit. The truth is - the point of being here is precisely to be outside of Civilization - & they don't want Massholes (what have you) coming up & marrying their cousin when that was their own plan - or bringing in any more drugs than Vermont has to deal with already...

If going to Maine, I would probably avoid Hartford and exit I-84 on I-691 to Rt 66 to Rt 2 to I-395. Rt 66 is a small road through small towns but not that bad. Rt 2 and I-395 have very little traffic.
