Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Threemoons:

Gonna guess The Azores or Estonia for today.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Phillippe:

BAU DiL, and I second your other salutations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm ChukAmok:

Hi DiL! One of my favorite Simpsons gags takes place in an international food court where they pass by a restaurant called "Have it Uruguay". Had to be there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm ChukAmok:

Hey Phillippe, Threemoons, and TDK60. Hope all are doing well today!
Avatar 🚂 12:13pm TDK60:

Hello David of Londonstoke. | I suppose I'm going with Suriname again.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm David (in London):

That's a first rate pun, Chuk, I will have to steal that.
Avatar 🚂 12:14pm TDK60:

Hey, is this Mayoma song in Esperanto language, David?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm David Dichelle:

'Tis indeed, TDK.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Stanley:

Good evening Herr Schaffner.
(Shows senior railcard on phone app)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm David Dichelle:

And a fine evening to you, sir!
Avatar 🚂 12:16pm Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

Afternoon all. I started learning Esperanto on Duolingo. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but didn't stick
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:17pm David (in London):

Hey Stanley, Kevin!
Did you get to speak it with anyone Kevin?
Avatar 🚂 12:19pm Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

No David, and that was the problem. The only practical use for it would be to go to conferences with other Esperanto enthusiasts, so I lost interest after a few months
Avatar 🚂 12:20pm TDK60:

Sad news for Fairport Convention fans. Their 2021 festival, which they thought they'd hold after canceling in '20, is canceled. Mainly, due to govt. ineptitude in insurance and pandemic protocols according to their festival coordinator.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I don't have the focus & fortitude to learn other languages. Not up to the standard of many FMU commenters it would seem. I speak Astrology - & I play Gittar... In the computer era my English skills are decaying for that matter...
Avatar 12:22pm still b/p:

To the tune of "Desperado"..."Esperanto," all about lingual isolation...and breakups.
Avatar 🚂 12:22pm TDK60:

Kevin/Riungwood.UK: I tried to learn Esperanto once, gave up. At the time it was used in international bulletins and correspondence. Lots of Esperantists were into the pen-pal thing. I figure today videos make it easier for spoken language. I think Esperantists rely on global conferences. Probably postponed for now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Kevin, RRN, SBP!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Phillippe:

Hey Ghuk, all good here! And you?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David (in London):

Kevin / TDK - I met a load of Esperantists going to a conference on the Paris Metro once. I had a delightful chat with them, but it did seem something of a dead end.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Phillippe:

*Chuk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm ChukAmok:

Hoping for rain here in Ghuk-ville, Phillippe! Otherwise all good, thanks.
Avatar 🚂 12:25pm TDK60:

Now, I'm trying to learn a bit of Spanish, practical in Nueva York. Self-guided lessons but I'm lazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm David Dichelle:

There is the big Esperanto conference coming up online this year, which I might attend myself. No excuse due to the travel etc.
Avatar 🚂 12:25pm Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

TDK, yes, exactly, they have conferences which sound interesting, but the chance of getting to a level where I could attend and actually understand seemed remote. Surprisingly, China Radio International still has a weekly broadcast in Esperanto on shortwave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm coelacanth∅:

greetings David and Freedom Riders
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Phillippe:

Thanks David. i'll clean it up after i pop it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm coelacanth∅:

Phillippe, now i feel bad for the ladies.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm StringOFperils:

I feel bad for the ladies who make the cucumber sandwiches.
Avatar 12:36pm still b/p:

Lady in photo singin',

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm David Dichelle:

Shawm enough.
  12:44pm headcleaner:

NYC is having crap weather all week + throughout the weekend it seems, so it feels like lockdown again. For which the current set is the perfect backing track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Reprehensible puns
...oughta be ashawmed uh yerselves...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm David Dichelle:

Hey Headcleaner, glad the power of the harp is coming through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm David Dichelle:

RRN: I know the shawm puns are hard to reed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm StringOFperils:

Reed 'em and weep.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:50pm dutchtheo:

Hallo, David! and subway rouders!
Avatar 12:51pm still b/p:

A wind-wind situation.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Phillippe:

coel, we are loaded with bread at our house, but you'll have to supply your own cucumber. A brother of one of the owners of the place where my middle son is working owns a middle eastern bakery, and every once in a while he sends bags of leftover baked goods for the worker bees to take home. Sometimes it's a LOT of bread. Last night it was literally a trash bag full. Multiple loaves of three different middle eastern breads, baguettes, several Italian breads, dozens of bagels. But no freakin' cucumbers
Avatar 🚂 12:54pm Bas NL:

Hi David! All! Quick hello from the work place.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Michael 98145:

Well, okay !
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Diana in Hungary:

Yes, well pronounced! The track means, "Who interests me." It is a comment on dating, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Diana, for the recommendation and explanation!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Diana in Hungary:

Thank you for playing this, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm David Dichelle:

And greetings Dutchtheo, Bas, Michael!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm David (in London):

Hi Bas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm David Dichelle:

My pleasure, Diana!

Ah a pre-clicked Amadou and Miriam. Ce n'est pas the premier fois tu a joué cet disque
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Stanley:

Big Tshala Muana fan, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm David Dichelle:

T'as raison, Stanley!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Stanley:

Génial David.
(I'm preparing for my first visit to France since October 2019!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm David Dichelle:

Are you heading for the Southwest again, Stanley?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Stanley:

Hi Sem. Hope you've wiped your hands.
Avatar 🚂 1:21pm βrian:

The southwest, as in Armagnac?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Stanley:

Yes, David, to see the Aged Ps.
Lots of prep involved, this time, though.
βrian - further south in the Pyrénées, near the Basque. A beautiful part of the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm David Dichelle:

Heya βrian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm David Dichelle:

Stanley, yes I can imagine, how are they coping over there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm coelacanth∅:

Phillippe (@1251) Lucky! i'd eat that with just some kerrygold butter, or olive oil and garlic!

- hi dutchtheo and Bas and Michael and Cmurtha and Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm coelacanth∅:

i'm guessing we might randomly go to sierra leone
Avatar 🚂 1:27pm Sem:

Hello, Stanley of the beret, and the coel of approval.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm David Dichelle:

Coel: We might!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Stanley:

They're okay. Dad is becoming quite frail and Mum is very bored. Managed to pursuade them to have the vaccination, Said I'd visit if they did and they duly had it despite their reservations.
βrian - a visit to my father's drinks cabinet normally yields some Armagnac.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Michael 98145:

Great set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm coelacanth∅:

(Phillippe, or butter and onion & celery, or hummus, or guacamolé, or luttuce & mayonnaise, ...)
Avatar 🚂 1:29pm βrian:

We biked through there back in 2004. Bottles of Armagnac add a lot of weight to the panniers, we found.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm David Dichelle:

Stanley, I'm glad you'll be able to make the visit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Michael!
Avatar 🚂 1:30pm βrian:

If they had reservations, that means no waiting in line! All the better!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm coelacanth∅:

(pass the armagnac please)
Avatar 🚂 1:32pm Sem:

I like Liberia on random road.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Stanley:

Thanks David.
βrian - Ah, those memories of Summer evenings in France with the local apéritifs, followed by a good meal, then digestifs.
  1:34pm David in London:

Romance isn’t dead here on Continental Subway.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Phillippe:

@coel wish you were nearby, I'm happy to share. We're freezing the bagels, but I'm afraid most of the rest will go to the ducks and fish. Most are already past the freshness point where I would take them to a food bank. We'll make some bread crumbs too, but there are only so many of those you can use
  1:38pm chresti:

Hi David and continentals! Paraguay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm David Dichelle:

Hello Chresti!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Stanley:

I'd lilke a pastis, splash of water, one ice cube, please.
Santé
Avatar 🚂 1:40pm βrian:

I recall watching the World Cup with a group of Guineans. They spoke Susu amongst themselves, between us, we spoke French, and the broadcast was in Spanish. English-only speakers, too. It was quite a workout.
Avatar 🚂 1:41pm Bas NL:

Little detour to home.. Jemen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm David Dichelle:

See you on the other end, Bas!
Avatar 1:42pm still b/p:

Spain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm David Dichelle:

βrian: Those situations can be a lot of fun.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Stanley:

Guinée has wonderful music. Used to be state sponsored, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm coelacanth∅:

Sem i was about to guess liberia -mainly because i have found little good music from there (aside from "traditional" music which i love, but it's similar to much of africa)
there's a lot of crappy new music, like most of africa and probably most of the world - diseased by autotune and rapping and predictable arrangements.
i know David will find better music than that.
anyway i chose liberia's probably slightly less americanized neigbor. i don't know why.
Avatar 🚂 1:44pm βrian:

@Stanley: Indeed. I went to see the Les Ballets Africains with the same group. What a blast.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Stanley:

Watched the World Cup in Athens, once, the bars wheeled their teevees outside. Had a great evening with a great bunch including some young Kurds and Poles (Solidarity exiles - remember them?)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Stanley:

Where was that βrian?
Avatar 🚂 1:47pm βrian:

Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Stanley:

Haha - far out. My partner has been invited to Michigan University in Ann Arbour to give a lecture. If that comes off, I'll let you know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm David Dichelle:

The whole main road here is currently outdoor seating with TVs for the Euros, there's usually someone around from the particular country to cheer any one of the goals.
Avatar 🚂 1:50pm TDK60:

Stanley, sad to say, it's Ann Arbor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm David Dichelle:

Not too much cheering during the last Germany match, of course.
Avatar 🚂 1:51pm βrian:

Hah. And it's The University of Michigan.

No matter. What's the topic, Stanley?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Stanley:

Sorry βrian is Ann Arbor a univesity in it's own right? Then it's that one. I just assumed. Subject -18th century material culture. Like I say, if it happens, her trusty assistant will be joining her!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Phillippe:

Station Manger Ken is a University of Michigan grad. I only know that because he and a buddy of mine both did student radio up there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm coelacanth∅:

i might have!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm coelacanth∅:

(David)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Stanley:

TDK60 - Ann Arbour was the name of our lead singer in my first band.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Stanley:

Quick - my punt!
Jamaica!!
Avatar 🚂 1:57pm βrian:

The University of Michigan is in Ann Arbor. The latter has no direct connection to the university, but it effectively subsidizes it via property tax exemptions.
Avatar 🚂 1:58pm TDK60:

Just jesting Stanley (You know us Yanks had a war to spell correctly.) I have friends in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti next door.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Carmichael:

Heya David, last second guess of Ireland!
  1:58pm David in London:

Ann Arbour, a sacred place for all Stooges fans.
Avatar 🚂 1:59pm βrian:

@Phillipe: I was there when Reagan was elected. A distressing moment, for sure. WCBN rose to the occasion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm coelacanth∅:

nice. those 2 million people make an abundance of great music!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Stanley:

TDK - I'll go to Ypsilanti just for it's name!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Phillippe:

@βrian sounds about the same time my buddy was there.

Gotta hop off for now, hopefully back for the end
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Stanley:

See ya later Phillippe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm coelacanth∅:

tchau Phillippe
  2:01pm David in London:

Looking forward to this set.

Ypsilanti, where the Ig grew up in a trailer park.
Avatar 🚂 2:01pm Sem:

coel, thank you for the overview of the musical map there. I was thinking along the lines of enslaved Africans return to their home continent, and that experience results in a kind of musical hybrid.
Avatar 🚂 2:02pm Sem:

Yikesilanti, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Carmichael!

And see you later, Phillippe!
Avatar 🚂 2:03pm TDK60:

David, never asked but my pals there are old enough to have seen Iggy and crew play. And MC5. They were the sorts.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Yvang:

Isn't the chorus reminiscent of "Saudade" by Cesaria Evora?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm David Dichelle:

Yvang: Yes, a little bit, it also reminded me of something else, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Sem that makes sense, but apparently what happened was the national radio station from c.1960 on (?) played only music from outside the country, rather than support the local tribes' music; and the relocated people didn't generally get along with the indigenous people so there was no push for it.
so there isn't much liberian music from the period that i, at least, consider the renaissance of african pop music, ~1950s>1980s.
(at least that's how i understand it)
there are a few artists though, and David will find them!

Thanks for your vote of confidence, Coel!

Did we ever get an ID on the statue of the rocker? I know it's not Phil Lynott, but Lita Ford maybe?
Avatar 🚂 2:17pm Sem:

If and when Liberian music gets its random road day in the sun, I have no doubt what you say will be so, coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm coelacanth∅:

...and there is good new african music. tons of it. just i couldn't find any from liberia. some other countries too, without the same excuse liberia has
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Stanley:

Soukous, Soukous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm David Dichelle:

Well let's see if the randomizer sends us that way next week. The odds are currently around 190-1.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm coelacanth∅:

Sem David might obliterate that theory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm coelacanth∅:

(and anyway, some people *like* autotune, attitude rapping and predictable arrangements!
it's just not for me.)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Diana Senechal:

Oh this is beautiful (Tondavowé).
Avatar 🚂 2:23pm TDK60:

Great tunes. I know nothing about Gabon except what you said David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm David Dichelle:

Pierre Akendengué is arguably the best known Gabonese singer.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm coelacanth∅:

i knew someone who went to gabon in the early '80s to help build houses. he fell in love, married and made babies. it took ~10 years for his entire family to be allowed into the us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm David Dichelle:

Now a few from the wonderful ANPAC compilations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm David Dichelle:

Coel: Ten years, that is rough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm coelacanth∅:

it was like: you and your eldest daughter can come. then a couple years later the 2 other children. his wife took 10 years, as i remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm David Dichelle:

Wait, if he is an American citizen, they should be as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm David Dichelle:

Of course, these things can be more complicated as well.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm coelacanth∅:

the kids, yes. i don't know what the hold up was with the 2nd and 3rd children. maybe the problem was at the gabon end -about separating the mother from her youngest children?

This whole set has been sublime.

it's very foggy but i kind of remember he was told to get the other kids here then they'll work on getting his wife over. maybe they (the parents) wanted the other 2 kids to stay with the mother, expecting no problem for them when the mom's finally cleared; but were told having all her kids here already would help her case.
i'm kind of guessing on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm David Dichelle:

Thank you, Diana!
