Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

When I was nineteen I knew this beautiful girl named Laurie who's job was to wear a Goofy costume at Disneyland and great people as they entered the park. One night we went to the Troubadour to see Little Feat. She got up and stared to boogie in a way that could only be called mind boggling. On the way home she said to me "I hope I didn't embarrass you with that dancing". I was speechless, but not embarrassed. Tom Waits opened the show, playing the guitar sitting on a stool.

Funny enough, I've been going through old Siskel & Ebert shows every morning with my exercise. What's cool is that it's tough to imagine anyone consistently siding with one over the other-- they both just spoke their opinions, and sometimes agreed and sometimes just yelled at each other. (That said, Ebert was the better writer by magnitudes).

RRN63, like that theory of jazz progression. The music class version is that ragtime tried to meld African-American rhythms with classical harmony and dignity, early jazz musicians loosened it up some while retaining the ragtime "oom path" (bass on 1 and 3), then Louis Armstrong blew it wide open and taught everyone to swing.
