Hi Tony! Hi listeners! A start with Bene Gesserit is a good start.

@ Mark: It's a double cassette -- in an edition of only 45 copies.

Good morning to you Tony.

Mornin', Stan!

Mark Williams:

it's funny to me that I can immediately pick out Sanderson's voice. It's not distinctive as such, but his inflections and accents always fit over the music a certain way.
Avatar 12:40pm
Tony Coulter:

It's impressive how consistently good he's been ever since the Storm Bugs days, 40 (!) years ago.

By the way, in case you want to know where this show thing is headed: The first half will remain focused on recent releases, but during the second half I'll be lurching backwards into '60s psych and such.

Mark Williams:

Tony - did you get digital or physical copies of these Futura Resistenza releases? The shipping costs they offer via Bandcamp are beyond prohibitive.
Avatar 1:14pm
Tony Coulter:

Digital -- for the reason you mention. I have gotten earlier label releases as physical copies from discogs sellers with better postage rates -- plan to do the same with these. Meanwhile, I'm glad it's not obvious I've been playing a fair number of mp3s today -- usually I avoid 'em.
Avatar 1:18pm
Tony Coulter:

But, well, I got all these digital versions for free, as promos. I'm really resistant to paying for mp3s.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Yvang:

This Damned song is so pop!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
David (in London):

The Damned are, I think, still the band I have seen live most times (just pipping Hawkwind). And they are still as bloody great as they always were. Due to see them at the end of this year (finger crossed), back with the original line-up from '76.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
Yvang:

This should be in the constitution "Mp3s are free and anyone who pays for it will always regret his action ."

Hi David, chresti, spod and everyone.
Big clearout #1 has been done. Tomorrow, a trip to the Municipal Waste and Recyling Centre (Formally known as The Dump).
  1:29pm

I hope that song is played often in casinos

The whole Science Fiction Park Bundesrepublik compilation is outstanding
Avatar 1:34pm

Agreed! It's great.

Dane:

LITHICS are great at convincing me I can forever live in 1981, believe
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

And, of course, they weren't even born then.
  1:41pm
Dane:

I admit I'm very pleased that one positive cultural shift has at least made the sound of 1981 timeless
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
David (in London):

Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1981.

Deceit 1968?
Avatar 1:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha!

Behind every (post-)punk lies a hippie.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
David (in London):

Well, luckily I have my crushed velvet loons close to hand, so I can make the switch with a deft step.
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

"Loons" as in "pantaloons"? Is that British hippie slang?
Avatar 1:54pm

"Crushed velvet loons" must have been my cue to show up...

I'm going to the love-in to sit and play my bongos in the dirt
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
David (in London):

Tony, it was. A variant term for 'bellbottoms'.

Stanley, you play the bongos like no-one else.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
Stanley:

You can say that again, David.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
David (in London):

I'm due to go into the office tomorrow. Perhaps I could join a Gypsy Carnival Caravan instead...
  2:06pm
headcleaner:

@Dane - re: 1981 - funny how the current moment is sometimes best experienced in the future. It seems that that partcular year took about 30 years to fully ripen, musically
  2:07pm
headcleaner:

And as the current set indicates, we are still coming to terms with 1968
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
WR:

A plus 1 for the Lithics. I recall looking them up at least once before when hearing them on WFMU.

oh, didn't click post on this. Darn work keeps distracting me.
  2:18pm

👍 Yes headcleaner very true, that and other culture mostly going on 'underground' until another generation more broadly appreciates it

Despite the mellowness, Mallard (on now) is post-Captain Beefheart's Magic Band.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
David (in London):

What did Beefheart call them? Dilated pupils, I think.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:44pm

this is really groovy, it's a duck?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
David (in London):

Mr Zoot Horn Rollo always had the most fantastic style.
Avatar 2:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha! Yep, Julie -- a Beefheart Duck. (Hiya!)
  2:48pm
Dane:

John French was touring some Beefheart songs a few years ago and doing an impressive job on the vocals
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
WR:

I actually feel guilt that I didn't appreciate Mallard for what they were doing rather than finding them lacking because it wasn't Beefheart. I'm sorry Bill, Mark and John.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
David (in London):

Dane, yeah, I saw the Magic Band here some years back and, with your eyes closed, you'd probably never have known it wasn't The Captain. In any other case I probably would have found that off-putting, but I figured French was probably owed some by Beefheart after the appalling treatment he subjected him to. Don't know how you felt about it?

I think it's great to make that stuff available for people to experience live! French probably deserves more credit in the way those songs sounded. Wish I could have seen it in person!

I love the French led Magic Band. Bought several recordings, didn't get to see them live but have several audience recordings, a couple of which are marvelous.
