Peter Grudzien  Broken Bottle Glass Sidewalks   Favoriting The Unicorn  MP3  This 1974 LP by Peter Grudzien ...is a psychedelic equivalent to Hasil Adkins in terms of his story, the number of songs he's written and his completely out-there angle on life in general -" - Jello

Nicodemus  Heads and Brains   Favoriting What For?  CD  "He has four albums (now more) featuring very aggressive acoustic guitar-playing--driving and hypnotic--and an instantly recognizable voice that'll send chills down your spine. Rin Eric  The Soundtrack to The Movie In Your Mind/Montana D' Anjo   Favoriting The Soundtrack to The Movie In Your Mind  LP  "This brings us to the mysterious Rin Eric album which I found in Denver. This could be the only copy; it's a white-label test pressing with a magic-marker cover: "The Soundtrack to The Movie In Your Mind." This came with a 50-page booklet, and the first song has lines like "That Chevrolet is a molecule/The smog above, pavement below." The over-the-top melancholy refrain goes, "I found my double/You've popped my bubble." - Paul Major "The booklet contains page after page of xeroxed calligraphy, strange drawings (which would have a psychiatrist calling the police in a matter of minutes), plus lyrics like "Every time I see you our souls lock/Sometimes in the tick of tock." Heavy man..." - Jello

Mike Walter  Mr. Pruitt's Apple Farm   Favoriting Mr. Pruitt's Apple Farm  LP  "There's many more regional records like this one: Mike Walker (actually spelled Walter), from Eastern Washington, around Yakima (same town as the Cops, Ltd. record) is trying to be straight country-rock, but something else comes through, especially on the opening track, "Mr. Pruitt's Apple Farm." - Paul Major "Folk and country lyrics are supposed to be heavy, bare-your-soul hard truths. But when some of these people try for a Dylan, Ochs or Guthrie anthem, things like this happen: "Have you ever worked in an apple orchard/and thought you were tortured/because of the blisters on your hand?/Man, you got to make a stand: 'Sorry Mr Pruitt but I ain't gonna do it today/I'm sick and tired of being wired to the basket on my shoulder/I'm gettin' much older'/hey hey, got to get away from Mr Pruitt's apple farm." - Jello

HYDE (the cover shows his weathered-looking face) writes passionate lyrics like, "If there's ladies in the park who'll attack you when it's dark, you got troubles, man." Eugene DeLuca  Discover Each Other   Favoriting Discover Each Other  LP  "In a thrift store I found this album by Eugene DeLuca of Philadelphia; there's no cover and it may have been one of those records made by studio hacks who, for a fee, advertise to "set your lyrics to music" and record them. The titles include "Boink-I'm a Lover" [pretty catchy], "Interspace Man," "Candy and Vintage Wine," and "Twilight Zone." - Paul Major (This record is near impossible to find, and there is no audio from it online. Instead I'm playing from one of DeLuca's later records, where he was experimenting with electronic music. I read that he ran a shoe store and was shot by someone robbing the joint."- Your DJ

The Shaggs  My Pal Foot Foot   Favoriting Philosophy of the World  LP  "...What happens when stage parents force their children into a recording studio and force them to produce a record? The most famous example is the Shaggs album by the three Wiggin sisters. They barely had command of their instruments, yet their father took them into a studio, and the result was classics like "My Pal Foot Foot." - Jello (The rounder LP re-issue)

"The oldest member of the band is Harold Moore Jr, age ten - he's quite a guitar player. Venita Marie plays keyboards, Denise Moore plays drums, and Jacqueline (age six) plays "waw-waw ogan," and is also the organist of the group - she began playing at the age of three." - Jello

Favoriting
1:14:30 (Pop-up)
Junior and His Soulettes  Pimp   Favoriting Psychodelic Sounds  MP3  Jello: "The music sounds like uptown soul played on toy instruments--" PM: "But very competently. Actually, it sounds like strip-joint go-go organ music; one organ has a wah-wah, and every song is played in the key of C so they don't make mistakes -- they sound like they've been playing clubs for 40 years! Their uncle recorded the album in his garage. which was full of puppet theater props, stolen phone booths, mad scientist lab equipment, etc." - Paul Major
Favoriting
1:17:53 (Pop-up)
Junior and His Soulettes  Rock 'n Roll Santa   Favoriting Psychodelic Sounds  MP3  "Another great song is "Rock'n'Roll Santa." Most of the albums were shrink-wrapped on a relative's meat-packing machine; as a result the vinyl is usually melted. When my friends met the uncle, he answered the door wearing a sock with two buttons on it over one hand and asked, "You wanna meet my snake?" - Paul Major

Yays & Nays  Nature is My Mother   Favoriting Yays & Nays  LP  "Here's the Yea's (actually spelled Yays) and Nay's album from New Jersey: three guys and three women in a war-between the sexes concept album." ...Some songs are great full-on '60's punk, while the girls' songs are more hokey "put your daughter in front of a microphone and see what happens-" - Jello "--real sincere prom dress music." - Paul Major (This is the LP re-issue)

J Ann C Trio  Hey Bo Diddley   Favoriting At the Tan-Tar-A  LP  "Here's the J Ann C Trio At the Tan-Tar-A (a resort in the Ozarks, Missouri). "J" is shown with a bass guitar; she has a voluptuous body in a tight dress and spiked glitter heels, and the dummer looks old enough to be her father-- he's sitting in a semi-lotus position with a snare drum." They do great versions of "Hey Bo Diddley," rockabilly songs, and an original called "Voodoo Doll" with a hypnotic torch voice on top---" - Jello

Rick Saucedo  Reality   Favoriting Heaven Was Blue  CD  "Here's a record by Rick Saucedo, "Heaven Was Blue," which sounds like the psychedelic side of the Byrds. On the back cover he thanks his dog "Satan" for backup vocals! Today he's an Elvis impersonator who won't acknowledge his past; I know someone who sent him $400 for a whole-sale quantity of records and he just kept the money." - Paul Major (another song request by my wife)- Your D.J.

The Muzzy Band  Introduction/I've Got The Music In Me   Favoriting How Was It? Live Album  LP  B: "On to The Muzzy Band---" PM: "--featuring a greasy Jersey hipster comedian with longish hair who played bars like The Playpen, The Jolly Smuggler, and The Headliner where a lot of albums were recorded. The vocalist, Rose Marie, blows everyone out of the water with her drunken scat-singing. The double-necked guitar-player tells the most insulting ethnic jokes imaginable. In New Jersey, Italian comedians over Godfather-type music are a whole sub-genre."

Here's Context '70 from Queens, New York, with contributions from various high schools. I especially liked the spoken word poem by Marjory Rudman: "Seagulls walking down the beach explore the sands for remnants of a Saturday morning/One with horrifying screech lands on the Boardwalk rail above a bench sitting woman/She, astonishingly, takes the seagull by his flimsy legs and salts him and eats him...a pitying bystander begs her to stop her eating/She wipes her mouth pleasurably and points to the bath-house roof/A safe falls and kills him." - Paul Major
