A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I think young people are lucky to be growing up in amerika in a time of Re-Newed emphasis on Liberation, Justice,Human Rights and all, of society will hopefully reap the benefits of our socially conscious youth !!!!!!!!!! Us geezers also have a role and we too will hopefully live to see the GOODNESS !!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Phillippe:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I do hope the youth save us because man ,there are some dark forces spending every day trying to break this country (more than it already is).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am YETI BOB:

morphe': It seems cyclic to me - "renewed emphasis on Liberation etc" could apply to the 60s/70s. There was a lot of optimism & hope for change. Then came the 80s and along with tacky fashions and some terrible synth-pop we got the Reagan Revolution, Newt Gingrigch, etc - a massive conservative backlash. Progress is never linear.

Love the Octavia Butler tucked in the Baez painting on the accu!!!!!
That is an amazing book about the future, survival, strong women ...
My fav is still Kindred even though I normally do not go
for time travel books ... the deep subtext of Kindred ( I presented
in workshops) is the nature/question of bi-racial relationships in
amerika.. I do not have an answer, just the questions....
Thanks Trouble and all !!!!

YetiB et al : I keep coming back to the fact that the Republican Party & RightWing have known for decades (@ least) that their policies put them increasing in the Minority (with changing demographics &tc.) - & that therefore transparent honest democracy will not serve them. So - they have acted accordingly - thru Nixon, Reagan, the 'Republican Revolution' w/ Gingrich & Karl Rove - the Tea Party & finally DonaldDrumpf. The Democratic Party in response rather than try & hold the true Left in the tug of war thot it best to compromise toward a 'Center' - but what is a 'Center' when the entire political spectrum slides completely off the rails to the far Right ??
This, & the challenge for the Left is different in as much as being 'Liberal' by definition means tolerating wider views - & it's harder to unite us despite the clear & growing Majority the Democratic Party represents. The Democratic Party is slow to adjust the Populist revolution - whereas the Republican Party being in the Minority shot the dice w/ Drumpf...
Optimism & Pessimism I reckon have to be measured to on one hand my expectations of what is likely, based on the System - & on otoh to what is really required to Progress based on conditions... For the Former - Biden seems to be doing well for Domestic policies & frighten us in Foreign policy (has been observed Biden is Centrist - *within* the range represented by the Democratic Party...) - for the Latter, I feel we are (for instance) out of time for beginning efforts towards Sustainability - & for Democracy in the USA (for instance), we are *right now* @ the exact knife edge of - all of the above...

  11:19am catherine m.:

Tim - glad to hear someone else appreciates them - the natives take them for granted - bird segment on wake and bake such a great idea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am HyperDose:

haha it does, Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Handy Haversack:

"Have you had the artisinal grackle from Whole Foods? *So much* toasted quinoa."

I'll be heading across the pond in a few weeks (to Michigan). I expect I'll see a few Ruffed Grouse over there. I won't been in Kirtland's Warbler territory.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Handy Haversack:

Where in the Mitten, βrian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am tim from champaign (now washington):

@catherine - they were also referred to as boat tailed grackles. In the PNW where I live now, my favorite bird is the Stellar's Jay. They remind me a bit of the boat tailed grackle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Jason from Houston:

A beautiful, loud ass, parking lot bird. Much appreciated.
Avatar 11:22am βrian:

Near TC, Handy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Phillippe:

Ooh, the Stellar's Jays are cool-looking birds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am steveo:

Glued to my radio. So good
Avatar 11:22am βrian:

We'll be taking the M'waukee fast ferry.
Avatar 11:23am mb:

Thanks DJ and good day to all. Just cold enough in Jersey to complain about it but sunny enough to get out in it. Peas. (uplifting show today Troubs)
Avatar 11:23am TDK60:

Does grackle taste like chicken? Sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Phillippe:

cedar waxwings have been reported in the neighborhood, but I've yet to see them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Handy Haversack:

Very jealous, βrian. You'll pass by my family's farm in Oceana County (NE corner, near Ruby Creek).

Gotta head outside until 1 to guard the car. I'll be listening on FM to the end of the show. Thanks, Trouble!

Say it loud!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Phillippe:

As per my promise... thanks for the James Brown, Trouble!
Avatar 11:27am TDK60:

No really, grackles are "cool" ; I tell them so when I see them in the park. But they seem too "cool" to respond to me.

I'M BLACK AND I'M P R O U D !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Frank Zaatar:

Great show, but is anybody else getting some interruptions in the online signal, about every 10 seconds?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Handy Haversack:

Hell yeah, Stillwell Coney Islander!
Avatar 11:28am Jack:

Birds! I've just put out my hummingbird feeder a few days ago, already have a couple of hummers, but a red-bellied woodpecker is stealing nectar! He's a pain in the ass! What to do?
  11:30am JT:

a cerulean warbler caused quite a commotion in Central Park a few days ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Brian - 2 things left to do on my Michigan bucket list is taking the ferry across Lake Michigan and going camping on Isle Royale. Have fun in TC. It's nuts how different the place is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Doug in JC:

@Frank Just tested fine for me. Bandwidth issue? If you try the 32k stream does it work fine (even though it sounds bad)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Jack - maybe put up a suet feeder near by to distract the woodpecker?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug in JC:

My new keyboard just arrived. I have no idea how to play it but that won't stop me
Avatar 11:34am βrian:

@timFromC: My spouse sometimes takes the late night Manitowoc ferry and naps on the deck. It arrives at about dawn, as I recall.
Avatar 11:34am βrian:

I remember the Traverse City Zoo. No more.
  11:35am headcleaner:

Can you think of a sentence that uses 'grackle' as a verb, @ßrian? And make it sound semi-natural? If you can, then voilà, it becomes a verb. That's how English works!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Phillippe:

@jack what Tim said. we have both a suet feeder and hummingbird feeder out and the woodpecker hits the suet
Avatar 11:36am Listener Gregory:

You are knocking it out of the WFMU ballpark with this set, Trouble!

"She'd been walking for hours beneath the searing sun, and her thoughts were beginning to grackle."
Avatar 11:38am Jack:

The pecker - after draining the nectar from the hummingbird feeder - then helps itself to the other seed we put out. I'm afraid to put out suet, for fear of other varmints (including bears)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Phillippe:

@headcleaner "Can you grab the spray cleaner? Stupid birds grackled on the lid of the smoker."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Frank Zaatar:

@Doug: Actually, Tammy came thorugh loud and clear, so who knows. I didn't have a problems with other radio streams I just tried, so I wondered if it was on the station's end. But maybe it's my wifi.

  11:41am headcleaner:

I think we just grackled a new verb into existence!
  11:41am Karen:

I always forget that James Brown is also 5/3 because I would remember Pete Seeger having a 5/3 birthday from back in my Sesame Street watching days. I guess if James Brown sang more often with PBS muppets I’d remember his birthday too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug in JC:

@Frank always worth asking! Sometimes it needs a reset though

@YB Be horrified by what I'm going to do, probably
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Phillippe:

@jack, hmm, bears are not a problem around here. we have our suet feeder dangling over the cellarway stairs to discourage uninvited diners. squirrels have even given up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am tim from champaign (now washington):

Ooh - I'll check out Kill "em and Leave. I love Trouble's book recommendations. Last week I read Qualification by David Heatly who was a guest on Trouble. I have to admit that I hated David other book 'My Brain Is Upset Down'. I think that reading that book first helped me enjoy and get more out of Qualification. I knew what I was in for and was able to handle David's extreme narcissism and the shitty ways her treats his wife and kids.

  11:43am Karen:

Grackle as a verb needs to be more about being an annoying group.
Avatar 11:44am Jack:

@phillippe - hmmm...I'll have to think on that. I also have squirrel issues. I love all the little critters, but some of them are such hogs that the smaller ones don't get a fair share. Can't feed everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am tim from champaign (now washington):

Ow wow, thanks Yeti! That's awesome.
