A hearty good afternoon to you, Irene, hello to one and all
Avatar 12:00pm Andrew in Toronto:

Hi there Irene and everybody else!
Avatar 12:00pm βrian:

Hola, Irene and listeners all.
Avatar 12:01pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Hello Irene and all
Avatar 12:02pm JosephB:

Hello Irene and listeners!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm YETI BOB:

Nice, Makaya McCraven - a little taste of home for me! I'm in Santa Fe NM right now, but I love Chicago.
Avatar 12:04pm Sean in Bristol UK:

My swag arrived last week and I have saved the suspense of opening said package during your show, Irene, ooh, the anticipation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

How do, Irene and all! In since the jump and just back from my SECOND walk on this glorious cool spring day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Irene Trudel:

Good day to you all, Sean, Andrew, βrian, Sylvia, JosephB, YETI BOB and james! Hope you're all settled in for a nice afternoon (or insert time of day) of listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Michael 98145:

Monday wakey time, hello, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm YETI BOB:

The incredible and under-appreciated Iva Bittová! If you ever have a chance to see her perform live, GO. She's based in the USA now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Michael 98145:

@YETI BOB, agreed! Did not know she was living here.
Enjoy Santa Fe, land of chile and zozobra
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Irene Trudel:

G'day to you , Michael! YETI BOB, Iva had been living in the Catskills, and I've seen her beautiful performances a few times over the years. She might currently be back in the Czech Republic doing shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm YETI BOB:

Iva did a show in Chicago where the audience was seated at small tables. She strolled around with her violin and was singing like this DIRECTLY INTO MY FACE. (Pre-COVID, of course!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm YETI BOB:

Also saw her once at the 24-Hour Drone in Hudson, which was also amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Irene Trudel:

Santa Fe must be nice this time of year, YETI BOB. Yes, I was at one of those strolling shows with Iva. So special!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm YETI BOB:

It's absolutely gorgeous here, Irene. And it smells nice too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm HyperDose:

Hello Irene! Hello Andrew in Toronto, Yeti, all!

Avatar 12:28pm northguineahills:

I once had a VW minibus record player (i gave it to a friend).
Avatar 12:31pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Beautiful set, thank you Irene
Avatar 12:31pm Stork:

Hi Irene - hi all you Trudellians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm doctorjazz:

I know, I know, hard to keep up with the different shows. Caught up with Stork (Great Ella tribute), Ranking Full Stop, and Gaylord in the archives, Music for a Free World is on the list.
Hi Irene!
Avatar 12:39pm Stork:

Give us that Giuffre juice!!
Avatar 12:39pm Stork:

Hi, doctorjazz!
Avatar 12:42pm Stork:

Free Fall: great album - about 60 years old. He did more with Bley and Swallow about 40 years later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Michael 98145:

That Ella show was doubleplus good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Love Giuffre! Love Irene! Love love love!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm YETI BOB:

According to legend, Jimmy Guiffre split up the trio after he and Paul Bley and Steve Swallow had to split a one dollar 3 ways after a show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm YETI BOB:

Talk about under-appreciated!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Irene Trudel:

Hey NGH! That was a WFMU premium on year. I decided to put it to use for today's photo. Hi to you Stork, doctorjazz and Doug! Nice that you're all here too.
Avatar 12:47pm northguineahills:

I somehow got a Jimmy Giuffre from my grandparents. I had no idead they liked jazz (parents weren't into music)
Avatar 12:49pm Annabella in Crewkerne UK:

Hi Irene, hello fellow listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm doctorjazz:

Hi Stork, Doug, listeners!
Also Love Giuffre!
(NGH, your grandparents were pretty hip!)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Irene Trudel:

Welcome Annabella!
Avatar 12:54pm northguineahills:

Actually met Iva Bittova a few times. When in town she used to hang at the Share party (still going on, but now in Brooklyn), The site seems to be down right now.
Avatar 12:57pm northguineahills:

@Dr Jazz: I asked my grandmother to bring a crate of records for me for xmas (I was 20) on the plane. She did. It was the last time I saw her when she was lucid before dementia took her. So, that Giuffre rekkid has special meaning to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Irene Trudel:

Wow, that's really a special memory of your grandmother, NGH!
Avatar 12:58pm northguineahills:

2 Foot Yard shoud play w/ Ike Yard
Avatar 1:01pm northguineahills:

(she also brought me many opera, classical, and jazz rekkids, and a red army rekkid, which dumfounded me, as my parents were fundalmentalist xtians who were very conservative, I guess it can skip a generation).
Avatar 1:01pm northguineahills:

(and they lived in WV, where i was borned)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm HyperDose:

Scratchie is such a good label name
Avatar 1:03pm northguineahills:

@Hyperdose: Not to be confused w/ Shanachie Recs.
Avatar 1:03pm TDK60:

Hi Irene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Michael 98145:

@ngh, she sounds like an interesting person ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm HyperDose:

@ngh Very intrigued by Scratchie now that I know it was founded by ex-Pumpkins and Fountains of Wayne members. Shanachie is pretty cool too, keeping it local.
Avatar 1:08pm northguineahills:

@Michael: it's a shame, I really got to know her personally as a young adult. We had a converstion where she admitted she was racist, and knew it was wrong, but, she grew up that way, and hoped I wouldn't be so. She gave me an afghan blanket as well, and I use it as my bedding to this day. When I saw her four years later, she didn't even know who my father was (her son). dementia's a bitch, and now my mother has it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Michael 98145:

Yes, we have a legacy afghan, too.
Swag For Life Member 1:10pm zzz:

sorry to have missed 2 foot yard.. the release on Tzadik is one of my favorite albums!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm doctorjazz:

My mom had dementia when she passed (quite a while before, actually), and it indeed is a bitch. Sorry to hear it NGH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Michael 98145:

same here
Avatar 1:12pm StringOFperils:

My dad is has dementia as well, but the silver lining in that, for me at least, is that I can at least hope that it has liberated him to some degree from my mother.
Avatar 1:12pm βrian:

My dad could vividly recall being sunk in the Coral Sea, but he had no idea who I was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm HyperDose:

How similar is dementia to Alzheimer's? My grandpa had Alzheimer's and watching someone go from a formidable aeronautical engineer to the mind of a frightened child is heartbreaking.
Avatar 1:15pm northguineahills:

Thanks, all, it's really stressing out my father (at least he's mentally fine). My mother used to run a charity and be the accountant for their church. She can do neither now (she also used to do other volunteer positions).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm chris in the redwoods:

hi, Irene and folks. i've been listening and enjoying the music while trying to get some work in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, Scratchie Records is the perfect name for a label, HyperDose. Here's a link to Eszter's show tomorrow night.: www.howlarts.org...
Avatar 1:19pm northguineahills:

@Hyperdose: My paternal grandmother had Alzheiner's, my mother has dementia, so I'm boned. Alzheimer's is a definite diagnosis, dementia is just based on symptoms. My mother is still going through tests for diagnosis. (sorry my tangent made everything dark, thanks for the tunes, Irene).
Avatar 1:19pm StringOFperils:

@hyperdose > Dementia is an older, broader term for losing one's wits, but seems now to be interchangeable with the term Alzheimer's Disease, a more specific set of conditions that are not yet fully known or entirely understood.
Avatar 1:19pm northguineahills:

My fave Turkish-Dutch band!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Irene Trudel:

Hey zzz, StringOF perils and chris. Sorry to hear about all your parents bouts with Dementia. My own dad and Peter's father both suffered from it to varying degrees before they left us. Giving you all a group hug!
Avatar 1:24pm northguineahills:

@Irene: Abrazos, de vuelta a tu!
Avatar 1:24pm StringOFperils:

Hugs back at ya Irene for being a radio god.
  1:27pm yetibob:

Witnessed two grandparents, and now my Mom, lose their minds to Alzheimer's/dementia. It's very sad. I'm not afraid of death, but I do fear a long, slow decline.
Avatar 1:27pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Eek, yet a set of awesomeness, close to lying on the floor in a curled up position!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm HyperDose:

@SoP Thank you for the clarification. My grandfather had it when I was young. Aside from him losing it, I remember they chose not to tell him. I always thought that was wrong and still bothers me to this day.
@ngh No need for apologies. The accu has been a great sense of comfort and support when life starts to feel like too much. I'm so sorry your dear mother is going through it. If you need to vent I'm only an email away.
Avatar 1:29pm northguineahills:

@yeti bob: Yep, my brain is the only thing I have going for me...
Avatar 1:31pm Bas NL:

Hello Irene! Connoisseurs!
Avatar 1:32pm βrian:

Just took Little Human in for a covid test. Ugh. Not a pretty experience, though we're pretty confident she's only got a cold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm KimSorise:

This is exactly what my brain needed. Hello and thank you, Irene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Son Of Pantz:

Does anyone else hear ABC's Be Near Me in the riff of this song?
Avatar 1:34pm Sean in Bristol UK:

My mum who is 86 is pretty lucid and used to smoke like a trooper and loved her G & T’s, old age sucks but we give it 100% to be there for them which has been hard through this last year. My mum, big fan of you Irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Irene Trudel:

Hey Bas and Kim! Nice to have you here. βrian, hoping your little human is okay! Sending healing thoughts to all you listeners. I Think we seem to need it today!
Avatar 1:37pm TDK60:

Don't know if you saw Irene, but Bob Fass has passed. WBAI's free form pioneer.
Avatar 1:40pm Sean in Bristol UK:

The EU are formalising the resumption of Trans Atlantic flights soon as long as you have a vaccination certificate. A major step back to normality
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm doctorjazz:

I hear The City Winery will be requiring COVID immunization or test to attend starting May 1. Thinking of going one Sunday in May.
Avatar 1:43pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Pubs with gardens are doing a roaring trade here, went to my local over the weekend and met up with friends, a fine time was done by all!
Avatar 1:44pm northguineahills:

Coreyah, not to be confused w/ Korea or Carreer (Pavement refrence).
Avatar 1:44pm northguineahills:

errr, career (I need to eat).
Avatar 1:45pm StringOFperils:

@ngh > No big err. (Punny Pavement reference from the same song)
Avatar 1:47pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Can’t wait to watch ‘Judas and The Black Messiah’. “The Trial of The Chicago Seven’ is a worthy addition
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Ireners!
I was just talking about RRK today!
Avatar 1:47pm northguineahills:

I saw Suzi Quatro w/ Quintron at Fort Awesome, a house in E Billyburg, then the toilet pipe burst on the sidewalk, but the show went on.
Avatar 1:48pm northguineahills:

Yeah, Black Messiah was really great, but, I never watch award shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Irene Trudel:

Sounds like a great idea, doctorjazz. I haven't been to the new City Winery but I hear good things about it.

Sean, both are great films but we had problems with how the Chicago 7 story was presented. Judas and The Black Messiah seemed a bit more historically accurate.
Avatar 1:53pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Each year I have a stab at predicting The NY Times Oscar poll, this year was hard to predict as I got to see much less than I usually do. Cinemas reopen next month, can’t wait
Avatar 1:54pm Bas NL:

Volume seems a bit low Irene?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm PaulRobeson1920:

Good afternoon, WFMU land!
Avatar 1:56pm βrian:

The stream went AWOL for a moment there.
Avatar 1:56pm TDK60:

I'm automatically suspicious of anything Hollywood does on the movements of the '60s-'70s. But I'll see those 2 movies (eventually).
Avatar 1:56pm northguineahills:

@Sean: reminds me I need to do my Champs League bracket.... (so, unrelated...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Irene Trudel:

Bas, is the sound low in general or on just that Rahsaan track? I've been having some problems with computer freezes today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Paul and TDK60! I'm always a bit skeptical with historical depictions in film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm HyperDose:

It was a bit low when I first tuned in, seems fine now
Avatar 1:58pm Bas NL:

In general, Irene. Barely peaking at -12dB on my meter.
Avatar 1:58pm northguineahills:

@TDK: it seems as historically vetted as Hollywood will allow. I also go through w/ low expectations w/ anything historical that goes through the Hollywood filter (there is even a podcast for that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Webhamster Henry:

I echo HyperDose's experience
Avatar 1:58pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@northguineahills, I am sure you will pick the right teams, for me it’s Baseball all the way! Feeling cautiously optimistic about The Mets
Avatar 1:59pm Bas NL:

Better!! :)
Avatar 2:00pm northguineahills:

@Sean: You poor bastard! My NYC teams are the Mets, Jets, and Knicks (and you know how that usually goes), and least NYCFC doesn't suck.
Avatar 2:01pm northguineahills:

(and the Rangers have been shite since I moved to NYC [and back 16 years later])
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm HyperDose:

My dad is a Mets and Syracuse football fan. Yeah, I don't watch conventional sports haha
Avatar 2:04pm TDK60:

Hmm.. haven't heard this Procol H. in years.
Avatar 2:05pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Jacob De Grom, a demi god, defence rests their case!
Avatar 2:06pm northguineahills:

As you all know, I'm a sports nerd, mostly futbol, but I follow cricket, rugby, aussie rules, and track and field, and, well anything (ADHD is a biatch, but ends up w/ interesting results).
Avatar 2:07pm northguineahills:

At least my alma mater is the conversation of most sports championships (hint, the reptiles that are the pigeons of the FL).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm doctorjazz:

Like Visions, cool track! (Don't know much about the artist, though I think I've heard her on FMU before).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Irene Trudel:

Melissa Aldana is a great sax player who was recently in the women's jazz ensemble, Artemis. She is playing a concert in Central Park this Sunday at about 1pm. www.giantsteparts.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm HyperDose:

@Irene You seem to have your finger on the pulse of live happenings, much appreciated now that things are opening up again. That first in-person show is going to be pretty emotional!
Avatar 2:24pm northguineahills:

I prefer slow movies (I've sat through movies 6+ hours that would make Fabio blush).
Avatar 2:25pm TDK60:

That's a great spot in Central Pk., the highest point but easy to miss. I go there sometimes in winter and no one's there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks HyperDose! I'm eager to get out to see live music too, so I'm trying to search out events you all might like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Irene Trudel:

TDK60, I love Summit Rock too. It's right in my neighborhood, so a nice short walk to go hear that music series.
Avatar 2:33pm northguineahills:

@TDK: That's where I used to smoke before going to the Lincoln Center.
Avatar 2:35pm TDK60:

Ha, NGH. I've heard in old times, one could see to the Hudson from there.
Avatar 2:43pm northguineahills:

Olmstead wanted Central Park to be more natural, but only a handful of spots were untouched (the glacial lorraine remains are amazing, if you're a geological nerd). He got his wish w/ Prospect Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Michael 98145:

Speaking of NYC, is the Village Voice back in print?
Avatar 2:43pm northguineahills:

errr, Olmsted......
Avatar 2:44pm northguineahills:

@Michael: Any day now!
Avatar 2:47pm northguineahills:

@Michael: when i first moved to NYC in 2000, the Voice was how I found my favorite shows and parties. By 2005, I rarely picked it up, as I got all of the info from word of mouth , email, or text.
