Listener comments!

Avatar 4/23 4:16pm Tony Coulter:

Hello, all! Today's playlist image is by Iranian artist Reza Shafahi.
Avatar 10:40am Tony Coulter:

Shafahi was a professional wrestler before turning to painting at age 72.
Avatar 11:39am Nick S.:

Hey! You can tell he's untrained.
Avatar 11:43am Tony Coulter:

Hey, Nick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

Good Tuesday, Tony and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm David (in London):

Afternoon Tony and assembled groovers.
Avatar 12:02pm Listening Out There:

I'm modern 'n fun loving. Yep, that's me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

Boy do I wish WABC in NYC played any of those songs, still. Or 101.1, TBH.
Avatar 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, hiya, hello, James, David & L.O.T.!
Avatar 12:05pm Nick S.:

Do it, honey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Little Fyodor:

Just tuned in! What was that Dan Ingram collage?? Dan Ingram was my first favorite deejay!! Oh man I dug that guy....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm chresti in tennis booth:

Hi Tony and forks!
Avatar 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

Fyodor! Chresti! Heya, heya!
Avatar 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

@ Fyodor: That was a collage tape piece from 1965 by Swedish composer Folke Rabe (he was staying in the U.S. at the time).
Avatar 12:14pm Nick S.:

Rabe seemed a bit overwhelmed by his stay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Yvang:

Hello Tony and listeners! When I am 72 I will give up art and become a professional wrestler.
Avatar 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, coel and Yvang!!
Avatar 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: Ha! Good plan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm coelacanth∅:

that's what i did
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm coelacanth∅:

and a trapeze flyer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm David (in London):

Hey Coela, Chresti, Nick, Yvang, Listerning Out There et al.
Some fine audio bricolage going on in today's show Tone.
Avatar 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Dave Id!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm coelacanth∅:

hey David (iL)!
Avatar 12:20pm Nick S.:

Hey, David! Excuse me while I clear my throat a thousand times.
  12:21pm Mark Williams:

reminds me of a stay in an Amsterdam youth hostel a friend and I had. Slept in a communal room w/bunk beds and a large bathroom with a long mirror. Israeli guy gets up around 5:30 am to begin his day, goes into bathroom and proceeds to gargle and spit out. He gargles, he gargles, he gargles. You could feel the collective annoyance of the room. After about the 8th or 9th gargle, some bloke shouts out in English "spit the f***ing thing out." Mid-gargle pause... pause... gentle spitting out, light turned off, silence. At last.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Stanley:

Ye Gods, Tony! What in ze name of all that's holy is this?
Avatar 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark and Stanley!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David (in London):

Stanley, welcome to 'The Grebbing Hour' with your host, Tony Coulter.
Avatar 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

@ Stanley: Wadya mean? A man has a right to clear his throat, doesn't he?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Stanley:

Ah, yes but in private, surely?. On the other hand I now have another track to add to my collection of unlistenables.
Back soon
Avatar 12:26pm TDK60:

Hello Tony.
Avatar 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm David (in London):

Avatar 12:28pm TDK60:

What, did this guy make the mistake of going downtown Portland and is breathing in tear gas? || Hi David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Yvang:

Oh I recognise the way the french npr is displaying the team. The french npr is "France Culture".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Stanley:

Now this is, er, more like it!
Avatar 12:30pm Nick S.:

I'm doing all 16 dances!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Yvang:

But instead of npr "France Culture" does not take donations it's 100% tax funded.
Avatar 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

And NPR would *never* air something like that Broutin piece -- they're much too middle-of-the-road.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm coelacanth∅:

i put on some mozambiquian mbira (?) piece mid-gargle to accompany it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm David (in London):

I feel like requesting Naked City's 'Jazz Snob Eat Shit'...
  12:38pm rw:

Avatar 12:38pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, rw!
  12:46pm Dane:

definitely sounding like Zorn's Naked City
Avatar 12:47pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dane! Agreed, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Hiya Tony
Avatar 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

Doug! Doug! Hiya! You're just in time for a 38-minute piece (sadly, I rarely play anything that long).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Hoorah for 38-minute pieces!
Avatar 1:01pm Tony Coulter:

Let's see if it drives everyone away. Though, if they stayed for the gargling/coughing piece, I shouldn't worry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Yvang:

Don't worry Tony, we have seen/heard worst!
Avatar 1:09pm TDK60:

It hasn't driven me away. Well, once I had to leave to visit the rest room. The ushers here are very helpful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Yvang:

That's a pretty nice piece, like a mix between Steve Reich and LCD Soundsystem...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Yvang:

80's sounds...
Avatar 1:16pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, it's like systems music on the cheapest synths/electronic gadgets you can find.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm coelacanth∅:

i tried, a few years ago, to turn on a few wfmu show hosts to this track. never got any indication that they'd listened to it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Yvang:

@ coelacanth∅: Bryce played another track from the same album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Yvang:

Seven times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm David (in London):

Yeah, I really liked that one. Well done Coela, A prophet is not without honour etc.
Avatar 1:40pm TDK60:

Is this still "Memoria"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm coelacanth∅:

it definitely wasn't Bryce that i'd mentioned it to...and i'm not surprised
...i can understand why some would shy away from playing a track that's nearly silent for a few minutes at both the beginning and end
Avatar 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

@ TDk60: Yep! Today's my day for long pieces (this is 17 minutes)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm coelacanth∅:

...but such details don't intimidate Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm JtotheK:

Hi Tony, hi everyone. Enjoying today's programme.
Avatar 1:45pm Tony Coulter:

Hi, JtotheK! Glad to hear it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm WR:

Hello Tony and hissless streamers. Lovely sounds. Sorting out who what I'm hearing.
Avatar 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm coelacanth∅:

on the american release this one's called
Avatar 1:47pm Nick S.:

This song is great to dance very strangely to. I gettin' down!
Avatar 1:51pm HollyRT:

Hiya, Tony, folks...long time. Well, not that long...I usually pop in for a few minutes each week but haven't announced my presence in a while.
Avatar 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

Holly! Well, either way, glad you're here!
Avatar 1:59pm HollyRT:

Everyone fully vaxxed? I AM! :D
Avatar 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Congrats. I'm half-vaxed. Gettin' there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm chresti in tennis booth:

I got the j&j vax 26 days ago.
Avatar 2:02pm northguineahills:

Actually here!
Avatar 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

I see you! Hi there, NGH!
Avatar 2:03pm northguineahills:

Tryin to parse Décérébrélélévissés nearly broke my brain!
Avatar 2:03pm Nick S.:

Fully vaxxed. I have had a strange taste for raw varmint flesh for the last few weeks but I can't be sure the vaccine has anything to do with that.
Avatar 2:05pm TDK60:

Got my 2. (May need a booster someday as virus surges across world.) I need to see a shrink too, to help me get normal "again."
Avatar 2:05pm Tony Coulter:

@ NGH: Know what you're saying. I'm not looking forward to having to say "Décérébrélélévissés" when I back-announce.
  2:07pm Mark Williams:

I can't see that phrase (fresh air) without thinking of the way that woman on NPR loftily pronounces it ('this is fresh air').
Avatar 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

Mark W! Hiya!
Avatar 2:09pm Tony Coulter:

"This is stale air"
  2:10pm Mark Williams:

I've been here Tony! see my Amsterdam hostel comment above.

Better than dead air. Well, sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm chresti in tennis booth:

Tony, just say it real fast.
Avatar 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark W: Oh yes. I already said hello. That John White piece altered my sense of time, I guess. Before it seems like ages ago....
  2:14pm T rexxed:

Bolan rocks!
Avatar 2:14pm HollyRT:

@Mark-- Did you actually refer to the legendary Terry Gross as "that woman"?? Lol
Avatar 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, hiya, T rexxed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm David (in London):

Marc Bolan used to fancy my mother-in-law, and would follow her around at parties.
  2:24pm Mark Williams:

@Holly. Guess I did. Didn't want to throw a name around. Hope I didn't offend.
Avatar 2:27pm Tony Coulter:

At least you didn't call her Terry Grossout.
Avatar 2:29pm HollyRT:

@Mark, no, of course not. I was just kidding
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm WR:

Sweet Daevid Allien.
  2:31pm Mark Williams:

cool. I can admit to not being a fan now...
  2:33pm Mark Williams:

Tony - I've always meant to say that I like how you'll feature particular releases, playing 3-5 tracks per show. Works very well to showcase things.
Avatar 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

Glad you like that. Some DJs avoid doing that like the plague.
Avatar 2:35pm TDK60:

I like it Tony, wish more DJs would do that.
Avatar 2:40pm Nick S.:

Always avoid the Plague! I purchased that new Rascal Reporters last week because all those tracks you played were so good. The guy producing those new records actually is adding tracks btw. They're sanction supposedly.
Avatar 2:42pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, he's completing unfinished recordings with the total approval of the remaining original Steve. In fact, he's now considered an RR member.
Avatar 2:44pm Nick S.:

Indeed. It sounds great and I'm glad he's doing it. It made my friend who produced them for many years a bit sad though. I ordered both the Duex comps. Can't wait!
  2:44pm F8TLSTK:

Hey Tony-another wonderful show.
You are a Godsend and Long Live T.REX!!!!
Avatar 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

F8TLSTK! Glad you were here ... and thanks for the great track!
  2:45pm Mark Williams:

he's got big balls singing like this...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm David (in London):

F8TLSTK, I enjoyed that track.
Avatar 2:47pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: It's Bon Scott of AC/DC!
  2:48pm Mark Williams:

@Tony - I know! He wrote a song for AC/DC called "Big Balls".
Avatar 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! I get you now! (I really haven't heard much AC/DC.)
  2:50pm Mark Williams:

I got my share of "classic rock" exposure a while back. It lingers.
Avatar 2:51pm Nick S.:

HAHA! Tony, you square, you. Have you ever gotten bombed out of your mind while listening to Bon AC/DC before?
  2:51pm F8TLSTK:

Thank you so much David!
Avatar 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

@ Nick: 'Fraid not. There are some super AC/DC fans down the block from me, tho. Maybe I need to go hang out with them.
Avatar 2:53pm TDK60:

Did this Pete B. write some lyrics for Cream?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Julie:

I really like this song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Julie:

1970 was such a great year for music
Avatar 2:54pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Julie! In case you don't know, Pete Brown was the lyricist for Cream, but also has his own bands.
Avatar 2:54pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Tony! oh, I enjoued that track as well F8TLSTK!
  2:55pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Tony! Really digging this set.
Avatar 2:56pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Funky16Corners! Thanks!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm David (in London):

This is very groovesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Julie:

Fresh Air AND Air Conditioning both great air-related bands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm David (in London):

Thanks for a great show today Tony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Yvang:

Thanks Tony! Delighted as always!
Avatar 2:59pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, everyone! Until next time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm WR:

thank you Tony!
  2:59pm Mark Williams:

thank you as ever, Tony.
Avatar 2:59pm TDK60:

Gracias DJ Tony.
Avatar 2:59pm Nick S.:

Great show, Tony! Next week we need a rock block of Iannis Xenakis!
  3:01pm F8TLSTK:
