A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hi Troublers.
Avatar 9:04am Clay Pigeon:

No "trouble" at all, 3moonz. A little achy, tired, some new psychkinetic capabilities. Other than that, nothing.

sweet start to the show Trouble, and HI all! Great show this morning Clay. I don't always comment but listen every morning
  9:07am Rick A:

Hello Trouble, I just filled out and paid my pledge. I chose your premium as one of my three. I'm looking forward to listening to it. I have many Trouble premiums dating back ten years and always enjoy listening to them. This is perfect for a rainy gray Thursday morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Handy Haversack:

Michael Stipe was right. This piece and "Stand" are truly among the crowning glories of humanity's achievements with sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am The Oscar:

Mornin'! One of the things that always confounded me in my record store days was The Orb, William Orbit, and Orbital all in a row in the electronic section.
  9:08am Robm:

What a great song to srart trouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am alanr:

I wonder if there is a banjo version of Adagio for Strings? Bluegrass style, of course. Dueling adagios, perhaps.
  9:10am headcleaner:

this is perfect for today's weather (in NYC)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Threemoons:

OH forgot to mention to y'all--while helping Mom clean out for move, I found an ancient David Bowie picture vinyl singles set, autographed! Half of me wants to keep it--I remember getting it at freaking Rocks in your Head Music in the Village--and part of me is thinking filthy lucre....
  9:10am Creston:

I had this cd when I was much younger. I always thought it had a Twin Peaks feel to it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Mona:

Ea!
  9:36am Barba Yiorgi:

ha, Yeah When I was listening to that first strings piece I was thinking this was some very weird orchestra piece, then saw it was Orbit, oh right he's playing samples on a keyboard as a non-classical person would. made sense.
  9:39am Barba Yiorgi:

-the way a non-classical player would, sort of fake-movie score strings but with real emotion.
  9:39am annette:

@karlward. GREAT idea. YES
  9:43am annette:

worked with a great techie/father/supportive hubbie guy. he was into death metal. discovered these artists knew classical music very well.
Avatar 9:44am Listening Out There:

Good morning from a ways out west....
  9:44am headcleaner:

"new psychokinetic abilities" is a nice way of describing the mild delirium that sometimes comes with fevers and innoculations, Clay. After what we've been through, we deserve it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Trouble:

@annette a million moons ago i saw a talk at princeton university about the huge crossover with classical and metal techniques
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am YETI BOB:

I'm in Amarillo TX on a little road-trip/vacation. The TV was on at the hotel breakfast spot and the weather lady said "It's literally warmer in Chicago right now." I took that personally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am YETI BOB:

Also - Hello Trouble & listeners. This music is really wonderful
Avatar 9:51am TDK60:

Careful out on the windswept prairie, Yeti.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Trouble:

@yetibob: merci! a vacation sounds great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am YETI BOB:

I haven't been outside Chicago since Jan 2020 so this feels almost like a trip to the Moon. I had a major anxiety attack before leaving - "Can I really do this?" But once I got on the road, everything was fine.
  9:56am headcleaner:

Any places you particularly like in or around Amarillo, Yeti? I've been meaning to get out to those parts for quite some time ...
  9:57am Arlene:

Thanks so much for the weekly pick-me-up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Phillippe:

Howdy! YB, glad to hear the trip is going well!
  9:59am headcleaner:

One of the downsides to living on the East Coast is that one has to drive 3-4 days to get to anywhere substantially different. (Even Florida / NO aren't that different from NYC, weather-wise. Different average temperatures, but same mugginess much of the time)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am YETI BOB:

headcleaner: I'm not actually spending much time here, I'm headed to Phoenix where I have some friends to visit
  9:59am headcleaner:

(There's Canada I suppose, but that country fell off the map a long time ago)
Avatar 10:00am wizard frog:

haha "wee honk"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am YETI BOB:

headcleaner: Last time I drove to the West Coast was 199x, I started in Boston. It's much more fun starting in Chicago, you miss all the congestion and rust-belt ... you get to open road much faster. First day I drove Chicago -> Kansas City and really felt like I was somewhere else.
Avatar 10:01am Roberto:

It's chhhooo-lieta
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am YETI BOB:

I'm not really doing justice to the places I'm passing through - I just ate and slept in KC, but it was cool - stayed in a hotel that used to be the Kansas City Club, where US Presidents used to drink during pronibition ... dripping with history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Webhamster Henry:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Trouble:

Avatar 10:03am βrian:

Texas is all about not doing justice, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am YETI BOB:

On the way back, if I'm not too homesick, I might go slower and check out some places. But for now I'm just moving moving moving
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Trouble:

hola @arlene! merci and glad to have you aboard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am YETI BOB:

βrian: It's not my first time in TX. I've traveled a lot in the USA. Camped in Big Bend Nat'l Park once, it was great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am YETI BOB:

I think TX is like NJ and FL in some ways - it has a reputation that isn't 100% accurate. There is some truth to the stereotypes, but there's also a lot of diversity. Not everyone in FL is Florida Man and not all Texans are cowboys. And not everyone from NJ is a ____.
  10:07am headcleaner:

I've had the best times stopping in "random" places, just getting coffee, talking to people, oggling flyers for music events (when that was a thing)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Trouble Been meaning to make this music recommendation: Lisa Bella Donna. I've listened to her for a while but really dug deep in the last year. Moog/modular synths. And there's something really appealing about the fact that she does this stuff while based in the Appalachian mountains.

  10:22am Mark Williams:

@Trouble - this is Dr. Pablo, not Augustus Pablo. The former is a white bloke out of London, but he was inspired by Augustus Pablo to take part of his name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am melinda:

I'm digging Dr. Pablo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Trouble:

thanks@mark! don't know how that info in the computer mix up happened
  10:30am Mark Williams:

@Trouble. No worries. That whole album of Dr. Pablo's is great, but then anything on ON-U Sound from their start til around 1986 is unassailable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am YETI BOB:

oh man I bought a "Dr Pablo" record once and was disappointed that it wasn't Augustus - a little bit of deceptive marketing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Trouble:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am YETI BOB:

Pale Son: Have you ever heard "My Life In A Hole In The Ground" by African Head Charge?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am YETI BOB:

That's almost as good a title as "My Life in the Gush of Boasts" (I don't remember who made that one, I never heard it, just saw the title)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Pale Son:

No, YB! Is it related musically, or just a coincidentally similar title?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Trouble:

this is a great compilation i bought on bandcamp. sadly NO info on any of the musicians but it's a really great record!
Avatar 10:38am Listener Gregory:

@Yeti Bob, I'm going to put that title in my File in the Bust of Goats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am YETI BOB:

Pale Son: I assume it's more of a reference than a coincedence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Pale Son:

Ah, I see! Sounds amazing, I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
Avatar 10:41am Buddha of Suburbia:

This is great! Hi Trouble! Hi Troublemakers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am YETI BOB:

"Bush of Ghosts" and "Hole in the Ground" both came out in 1981 and tbh I think I like the African Head Charge record more - at least, I still play that one while I haven't listened to David and Brian's record in ages. The Goog tells me that "Gush of Boasts" is somehow related to Radiohead/Johnny Greenwood, I dunno about that, it just stuck in my head b/c it's funny

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Handy Haversack:

I was going to say: put Barba Yiorgi on the case!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Pale Son:

I kinda feel similarly, YB, though his "How Music Works" book was pretty great, I thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am YETI BOB:

speaking of Black Panthers - everyone should watch "Judas and the Black Messiah", the Fred Hampton movie. I couldn't watch the brutal ending (which I knew was coming) but I cannot recommend this movie highly enough.
Avatar 10:52am βrian:

Brian Oeno? The singing sommelier?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am YETI BOB:

all of the acting was amazing, and Fred Hampton's widow and son were on-set during the filming to advise on accuracy. If this film doesn't win multiple awards, something is really screwed up with the system
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am YETI BOB:

βrian: I love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am YETI BOB:

"Music for Vineyards"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Trouble:

has anybody read any of the gil scott heron books?
Avatar 10:54am TDK60:

Actually I've heard both the Hampton movie and the one on the Chicago 7 films criticized for fogging up the events; typical for Hollywood when it comes to the '60s left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am YETI BOB:

TDK: Really? I've read several articles about how accurate "Judas" was. They took a few small liberties (the timing of Bill O'Neills suicide) but overall I think it's pretty accurate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Handy Haversack:

I watched it, yeah. The acting was solid. But ... well, what TDK60 said. Politics and history subsumed by story. A compelling movie, but I don't know if it's even possible to tell revolutionary stories in the framework of capitalist film production.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am harry j:

Avatar 11:00am Roberto:

Holy shite Merry Clayton y'all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am YETI BOB:

I think the movie is about Bill O'Neill more than Fred Hampton - "Judas" is the first word of the title - and I thought his compromised character was really well-developed. I am a committed socialist, but didn't go into this expecting left-wing agit-prop. I thought it was great, for what it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am harry j:

thats nuts what a force

@trouble - haven't read any of the books, but I used to work at TVT records and we re-released most of GSH's catalogue. He used to sit in my office, under a poster of his original recording for TVT, waiting for the GM across the hall. We'd chat for hours or at least until he nodded off. Those were his later years and he was kinda out of it a lot of the time but still had plenty of nuggets of insight. And he still had that voice. Nothing like it.

annette: when i was younger i did a number of 'sleep-in-the-car' road trips. even got woken up by the police a few times. now that i'm older i can afford a hotel, which is nice because i don't think my back could take sleeping in the car!

Buddha - it did occur to me that I should have tried to make "Party Girls Dub" - but I'm not thinking about that contest so much any more

Avatar 11:19am βrian:

It works better for cats, actually, because they're already disposed to regularly purging their cookies. Keeps 'em safe, don't you know.
