Leaping aboard before we pull away! Greetings, David and all the Voyageurs!
Avatar 12:01pm βrian:

Another beached boat, I see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Threemoons:

ALL ABOARD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm fred:

Hello David and fellow travelers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm David (in London):

Ahoy David and all travelling groovers!
Mine's a large Scotch and soda. And some toast and pate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm David Dichelle:

Ahoy there Handy, ßrian, 3M, Fred, David!
Avatar 12:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - how delightful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Phillippe Bastille:

howdy from the Land of Too Many Work Calls. Hey Handy, Davids, Brian, fred et al
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Phillippe Bastille:

and why are there no cookies in my house right now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm David Dichelle:

Greetings RRN and PB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm David (in London):

Phillippe, because I have them here. Sorry.

Handy, Brian, Threemoons, Fred, Rev D. Rabbit, greetings all.
Avatar 12:06pm Sem:

Hello, David, and all aboard. Glad to be along on this blustery Spring day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Handy Haversack:

Sorry, Phillippe, I'm trying to pass them off as toast and pâté right now. Also, about your Tang ...

Hey there, βrian, Threemoons, fred, David, Rev Rav, Phillippe, David, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm David Dichelle:

Hello Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Carmichael:

Hello from the land of allergic reactions. And I'm going with Republic of Korea today.
Avatar 12:07pm Hubig Pie:

That's a rather pastoral looking dry dock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm David Dichelle:

And welcome Carmichael and Hubig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Carmichael:

Should be 85 today in The Republic of Northern California.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Phillippe Bastille:

I thought you guys called them biscuits over there, David!

Toast and pate would work for me, handy as long as the toast is the black Oreo cookie and the pate is the white sugary stuff between the black Oreo cookies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm fred:

@David: I posted a possible correction after last week's show, did you see it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Phillippe Bastille:

Brazil/Brasil for me today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David (in London):

We do Phillippe. I used the linguistic arbitrage to get them out of your house, through customs and into my kitchen drawer...

Hail Sem, Carmichael and Hubig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Phillippe Bastille:

And if we decide to go with planets instead of countries today, I'm gonna go with Earth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm David Dichelle:

Fred: Yes, I fixed it - thanks for catching it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Phillippe Bastille:

Just wondering, David: does Google Translate work between British English and American English?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm David (in London):

I'm in for Papua New Guinea today.
Avatar 12:13pm Hubig Pie:

David,in this country we keeps our cookies inna jar, not in a drawer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Carmichael:

BTW, the "used" list: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Handy Haversack:

Lemme fire up the ol' spreadsheet and random.org ... and: GREENLAND, please!
Avatar 12:14pm βrian:

The door is ajar. Will that work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm David (in London):

And that was the real secret behind your post-War success Hubig. We clung foolishly to our outmoded Victorian biscuit drawers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Hubig they never quite make it to the jar in my house. And we no longer make room in the freezer for ice cream since it never quite gets there eithre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Handy Haversack:

Hubig with one hand smoothing his mustache and the other resting on his trusty Colt ...
Avatar 12:17pm Hubig Pie:

I won't be around for the reveal cuz I have a date with Moderna no. 2,so put me down for Zaire and please be honest if I win
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Phillippe Bastille:

I made brownies one night before I went to bed and set them out to cool. There was "A" brownie singular when I woke up 7 hours later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Phillippe Bastille:

good luck, Hubig! I get Pfizer #2 next Friday so my bride can yell at me for lying around over a weekend instead of malingering on work days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Alex In Illinois:

I'll guess Macedonia today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Threemoons:

C.A.R. or Somalia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Handy Haversack:

Congrats and good luck, Hubig! Drink lots of water! Whisky as needed.
Avatar 12:21pm βrian:

Cookie jars unless you intend to share them with the mice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Phillippe Bastille:

too many snakes in our yard to worry about mice...
Avatar 12:22pm Sem:

Random Road: Mauritius.
Internet TLD: .mu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Alex In Illinois:

I am most familiar with the version of the Golden Vanity by Minstrocity, a very local Chicago area ensemble that no longer is together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm eºIºk:

Palau? Marquesas/French Polynesia?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm David Dichelle:

Hello Alex and Ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm David Dichelle:

Good luck, Hubig, hope it goes smoothly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm redkayak:

Happy March 32nd everyone! Just a brief hello I'm afraid.....field work calls. Hope all have a good weekend!
Avatar 12:24pm Hubig Pie:

Thanks for the hint. Please update my pick to Tunisia. Phillippe, I hear being old and tired helps lessen the reaction. So's we got that goin for us. Which is nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David Dichelle:

Ahoy briefly, RK, you too!
Avatar 12:24pm Sem:

Hello, D iL, the Handyman, Phillippe of the disappearing brownie locale, and βrian.
Redkayak, been awhile. Good to see you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm doctorjazz:

Hi David and commuters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm David Dichelle:

Hello Dr. J.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm redkayak:

@david - Aye aye sir! I like that boat of yours :D
Avatar 12:25pm Hubig Pie:

Handy, Ja. Lotsa water followed by a small double gin martini
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm redkayak:

OK, the trees call ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Handy Haversack:

Alex in Illinois, there's a North Macedonia on the list, but not Macedonia proper.

Ike, Threemoons, both your choices are available. You hedging your bet like in roulette?

Welcome aboard and bon voyage, redkayak!

Solid plan, Hubig. Solid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, RK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Michael 98145:

Hello, all. A rising tide lifts all ships.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm David (in London):

Hi doctorjazz and redkayak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm David Dichelle:

Greetings, Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Brian in UK:

Avast there land lubbers on the Continental Frigate. Take this Black Spot to Billy Bones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Brian in UK:

Capt'n David, is that your take on the Suez Canal?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm David (in London):

Ahoy Brian, bring her around and loose a broadside across their bows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm David Dichelle:

Ahoy Brian - just happened to pass it a couple of days ago - either that or this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Handy Haversack:

Looks like Fitzcarraldo would have been a more boring story in the Leipzig environs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm YETI BOB:

Hi - I've been listening while eating - now I can greet you all properly, and announce my guess for this week - Ecuador!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm David (in London):

Yeti alert! All hail the Count.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm David Dichelle:

Proper greetings to you, Yeti Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Brian in UK:

It is grog all round for this trusty crew.

David, our doughty boys will be aboard afore you can sing Fifteen men on a dead mans chest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, YB, on your spreadsheet, do Svalbard and Jan Mayen occupy one row or two?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Threemoons:

I wish I was organized enough to keep such a spreadsheet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Brian in UK:

I've a yearning to head for Longyearben.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm David Dichelle:

Handy: Especially at that location, which was an open coal mining area until recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm YETI BOB:

[Country(alpha_2='SJ', alpha_3='SJM', name='Svalbard and Jan Mayen', numeric='744')]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Alex In Illinois:

I had to ask "Salty Walt about this song. Why the verse says that Larry Mahrs is in "Frisco Town" but the chorus keeps saying "Old virginia Lowlands"

Choruses can be barrowed from other songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Brian in UK:

Russian coal mines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm David (in London):

My grandfather was one of the first Jews to serve in the Royal Navy, aboard HMS Repulse during WW1. He didn't drink, so he swapped his grog rations and never had to do his own laundry!

Nice one Grandad Gershon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Alex In Illinois:

I will have to take another listen to the John Townley version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm YETI BOB:

I do not use spreadsheets. That's from the ISO-3166 list which is the official standard for this show (and many other important and serious things)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm David Dichelle:

David: That's how it's done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm David Dichelle:

Alex: You never know where folk song versions will go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey wait, I don't drink and just threw a load in the washer this morning! Where did go wrong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Brian in UK:

David the navy must have been tough then but nothing compared to the Royal Flying Corps. Pilots life expectancy about three weeks.
Avatar 12:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Aye - me trousers was thirsty this morning Guvnor...
& what the folk happened to these lyrics ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Handy Haversack:

Maybe the brownies, Phillippe?

YB, I copied it into a sheet, and those rows were unmerged. No wonder I haven't hit! I have taken measures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Yvang:

Hiya, y'all of the train!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm David Dichelle:

Salut Yvang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm YETI BOB:

HH: There should be 249 entries
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Brian in UK:

Hello Yvang.
Avatar 12:42pm Will in Norman:

the first version i heard of this song was the 1 bascom lamar lunsford did, on a record my grandpa had
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm David Dichelle:

Yeti Bob: The only catch is that I've had to remove a number of entries for being too small to do justice to the concept.
Avatar 12:43pm Will in Norman:

he was into the folk revival when he was in college in the 50s, even tried his hand at banjo. according to my grandma he was never very good at it though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm YETI BOB:

DD: Sure, that's where judgment comes in ... I wrote a little program and the very first thing it came up with was "Bouvet Island", which was good for a conversation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm David Dichelle:

Will: I don't think I came across that one but there have been so many recorded versions of this song, it was hard to make the selection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm YETI BOB:

But I ran the program again ... there always has to be a human in charge of the robots!
Avatar 12:46pm Will in Norman:

@David
it's on his LP 'minstrel of the Appalachians'. idk if it was ever reissued
www.youtube.com...
Avatar 12:47pm Will in Norman:

the version is called 'the merry golden tree'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Handy Haversack:

I have been moving the regions that have come up to a separate tab. I found some formatting issues and fixed. I guess I should run another random.org and see what my guess would have been ... but Greenland is official!
Avatar 12:50pm Will in Norman:

does 'De Razende Bol' have anything to do with the Irish tune 'rosin the bow'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Handy Haversack:

Ooo, secret unofficial guess is such a good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Michael 98145:

That's a lotta Roud
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Little Danny:

Hi David, hi all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm David Dichelle:

Hey there Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Brian in UK:

Obrint Pas reminds me of Manu Chao.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm David Dichelle:

Will: I don't think so, but who knows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Yvang:

Clay Pigeon could do it in 140 year in a daily segment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm David Dichelle:

Brian: Very much so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm David Dichelle:

Yvang: I wonder if he's interested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Handy Haversack:

Clay might find a way to fit five in per show! Knock that down to thirty-five years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Yvang:

He's a folk guy : he plays the flute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm David Dichelle:

I'll have to figure out how long it would take as a non-stop marathon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Yvang:

Yer'mat is the only useful word in breton!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm David Dichelle:

I'm assuming the same pace, though, which might speed up as we possibly hit stretches of more obscure and less frequently recorded songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm David Dichelle:

Yer'mat, Yvang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Yvang:

Thanks David! Apparently the right spelling is yecʼhed mat
Avatar 1:00pm Hubig Pie:

Another entry in the pantheon of bagpipe music on the WFMU air stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Yvang:

Yer'mat is closer to the prononciation...
Avatar 1:01pm Will in Norman:

the buryat/mongolian song on this track is 'uils dundaa sain', it's a new year song i believe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm coelacanth∅:

greetings David and Freedom riders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Yvang:

Ken Freedman is on a strong bagpipe phase these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm David Dichelle:

Yvang: I suppose it's a kind of abbreviation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm David Dichelle:

Salutations, Coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm David (in London):

Hey Coela.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Handy Haversack:

Yo, coela!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm coelacanth∅:

David! Handy!
Avatar 1:03pm Lisboner Pascal (France):

Greetings! First time tuner, what a stonkingly good show today! Gonna try and make it every Thursday. Wow. Thanks all, and a big sloppy bisous to David, how are you buddy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm David Dichelle:

Thanks so much, Pascal, welcome aboard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David Dichelle:

Will: Thanks for that, that is a great catch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Handy Haversack:

Has anyone seen Really Lisa lately? I feel like it's been quite a while.

Hey there, Lisboner Pascal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David (in London):

Yo Pasc, how are you my brother? How's tings in Arles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm chresti:

Hi David and Continentals! Back from my J&J shot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm coelacanth∅:

so, i might've guessed the united states, since it's a big country that i think is highly possible no one's guessed yet; but as i'm disgusted with the us i'll guess liechtenstein.
Avatar 1:11pm βrian:

I recall a very dicey outhouse in Arles, dear me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm David Dichelle:

Hello Chresti, glad you got it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Brian in UK:

Is the new show connected to Little Danny?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Handy

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm chresti:

Little Danny recommended her, he knows her in TEX.
Avatar 1:23pm Sem:

Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Brian in UK:

Thanks chresti.
Avatar 1:23pm Sem:

This.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm David Dichelle:

Territories - and some more integral to the countries involved - are definitely on the list.
Avatar 1:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Phrasing like Lulu. That's a compliment...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Handy Haversack:

coela, yeah, I decided not to get into all that. She's under three blankets with her vaccine chills and is having me order in diner food. Getting into the weeds of the CS game is one step more than I think we're up to right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm David Dichelle:

Sorry to hear that, Handy, hope K8 feels better soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm David (in London):

Good spot there Rev Rabbit, I agree.
  1:27pm C in Thailand:

Luckily I'm here with someone from Myanmar. She's familiar the singer. From Myanmar Idol Season 2. The title translates to something like "What people need to do in their lives." It's about having to follow stupid rules.
Avatar 1:27pm still b/p:

If Lulu and Melissa Etheridge had a baby...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm David Dichelle:

Wow, thank you both, C in Thailand!
Avatar 1:28pm βrian:

Maybe a nice Irish Coffee would help with those chills.
Avatar 1:28pm Hubig Pie:

No correct guesses yet? Put me down for Skull Island then. G'day all, off for me vax
Avatar 1:29pm Sem:

Estonia rockin' the joint.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, David! It's mild, and diner food promises to help -- and it's well worth it!

You go Hubig !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm David Dichelle:

See you later, Hubig!

Yes, that would be the first Vatican song that comes to my mind as well. I don't think Vatican City would really work for a segment.

Interesting to see Twyla Tharp doc in which she's choreographing and rehearsing via Zoom with separate dancers/locations for eventual performance still via Zoom. Latency messes with our simplest talk -- imagine how, with non-uniform delays, it effs with counting and moving in unison.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Phillippe Bastille:

Handy, I think we were talking last year about me setting up an estuary tank. Like everything else I do, it took me a year but I finally got it going. Added some little shrimp I scooped up with the dip net today as the first residents
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm David Dichelle:

PB, yup, another freelance teaching artist gig, but one that pays at the upper end of the range and lets her have some good creative input into a program. Seems like a solid org.

Oooo, neat, Phillippe! We would have periodic "prisoner exchanges" from the tank back to the estuary. Brine shrimp? Grass shrimp?

Now you need a microscope to see what else is hanging out from the water!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Michael 98145:

@PB, wow - aquaculture!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm YETI BOB:

from the 'pedia: "Maloya is one of the two major music genres of Réunion, usually sung in Réunion Creole, and traditionally accompanied by percussion and a musical bow. Maloya is a new form that has origins in the music of African and Malagasy slaves and Indian indentured workers on the island, as has the other folk music of Réunion, séga. World music journalists and non-specialist scholars sometimes compare maloya to the American music, the blues, though they have little in common. Maloya was considered such a threat to the French state that it was banned in the 1970s."

I think they are grass shrimp -- mostly clear little suckers. Way more active than I expected. I've seen some sporadic small fry swimming around that I haven't been able to snap. We had a lot of little killifish and anchovies last year
