YETI BOB:

OK, so, somebody stop me if this is too much. Raag, scale, and mode are all related concepts. Your instument can make more different notes than you can use (unless you are Schoenberg) you don't use all 12 notes in an octave on the piano, you choose a smaller set of notes to use. This choice is a "scale". The most basic scales are pentatonic (black keys on keyboard) and diatonic (white keys).

YETI BOB:

Modes are a way to get new scales from old. If you play all the white keys from C to C it's a standard major scale. But if you start on A you get minor. Dorian is what you get if you start on D. It's much less common.

@YetiB I appreciate it too. I know real rock musicians who know the modes; I never did. I can plot out a simple melody on a scale but that's about it. Most of my 'composing' comes about messing around on a guitar.

Avatar 🎸 11:40am
YETI BOB:

You can get minor from major by starting on a different note (A instead of C) and keeping all the same pitches. But you can also get a minor scale by keeping the C as the starting note, and changing some of the pitches (flatten the 3, 6, and 7 - use black keys). So "scale" and "mode" are very related

I've been on a call for work, and have been aware of this string of Eleanor Rigby covers happening in the background, but am damn sad I haven't been able to really listen to them.

Joe, you need to check out Emmett Chapman's version. might be a bit too psychedelic for this show though

I'm sorry I missed the Elvis Costello singles (food shopping). I had this memory ringing in my head since I heard the the Chet Baker you played early in the show. I was at one of those Dr Pepper open air concerts by the Hudson River around 1983 and went to hear EC on his Punch the Clock tour, I think. He took a special break to introduce a guest trumpeter, I recall. I was not familiar with Jazz at the time. Anyone know if that happened to be Chet Baker playing with EC?

Mary Wing does Three OF a Kind - several versions of one tune all the time. It's in fact a very interesting study of Song Structure...

Getting on here late to remember the Tom Zé. He's always so good, but this particular recording, synth & all, sounded positively Kink-ish to me. His vocal style, even. Anyhow good on ya reaching that goal & achieving multiple DJ personalities!
