Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Handy Haversack:

Techtonic is an absolute good in the world. It's shocking how much resistance I find just talking about the things that Mark delves deeply into for us. Imagine if this were some sort of podcast looking for a home. Never happen. No ad-driveb hosting platform would touch it. But we get it every week for free. Free!

I am *happy* to send in what I can so that Techtonic can keep going out over the airwaves. I value it more than I even know how to say. Same for all of WFMU, but Techtonic feels like a secret defender, always in my corner, telling me that it's OK to stay angry, to stay skeptical, to keep insisting there are other ways.

Thank you, Mark. Thank you, WFMU.

Mark and Sheila. Perhaps you've covered this before, but.... your thoughts on Bandcamp?
  6:31pm J Boogie:

NFTs are pretty fascinating
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm ultradamno:

The guy from Ripple was on Axios yesterday. He was very intent on using the phrase "crypto industry" as much as he could, which seemed like a concerted effort to make it seem tangible. I don't know a lot about NFTs, but they seem like another way to get you to spend money on things you never really own.
  6:31pm J Boogie:

Hype bubble right now though. I’m not buying
  6:31pm Martinibomb:

Avatar 6:35pm neeelz:

  6:35pm J Boogie:

Martinibomb if I had licensing fees for every time some asshole stole something from me on Instagram, and profited, I’d be rich. It happens so much. Happened to me twice by artists with over 100k followers. The only way to fight back is to not participate in that grifting circle. This is also why I found the NFT thing to be so interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Scott67:

That's shitty MB! I wonder what someone would make of my Art?
I don't have "friends" on Fakebook that I don't, or wouldn't have in life. So hope they wouldn't plagiarize me. Don't think they'd wanna claim my stuff as there own anyway. 😉
  6:37pm J Boogie:

The wildest was when some overhyped gen z artist from Brooklyn literally made a painting of one of my photographs nd sold it for more than I probably make in a year

  6:42pm J Boogie:

@martinibomb yeah it’s critical for an artist to not always have eyes on their process. That becomes so problematic for so many reasons. So not into that Instagram art style either... of constantly looking over your shoulder, comparing, counting likes and followers. What a clown show.

Handy in Tech anything is possible - & politics can shift as well. These monopolies are so huge though - I fear they'll kick & scream & go nuclear worse than DonaldDrumpf if we try & demote them... I think more & more people are getting wise to what social media is like & what it does to them - & what the profit motivations really are... I 'll be interested to see what the new Admin in D.C. does about the tech monopolies - & where we are after a few years... The pandemic of course intersects this massively - isolating everyone & profiting the tech titans - *massively* - & if we get past covid I'll be interested to see what Biden has time for... & mid-term elections - &tc.

Lynette Yiodem- Boakye
She copied a photo of a dance I had made in agreement with the choreographer and dancers; she made my photo into a painting, Everything inc the edge of the frame- hands toward edge, exact same clothing, lighting and hair bounce. She did change the skin tone and used the medium of paint. The choreographer felt violated too. We sought legal advice and did not have the $ to pursue. Though there was a chance we would have won, I'm sort of known in this small scene.
LYB "found it on the internet" so "It's mine" LY-B always says she makes paintings from her imagination" on her gallery site and in interview's in NYT et al .
I and choreographer understand art stuff- about homage, appropriation , collaboration etc. This outright stealing with the artist yakking about her imagination was/is, can u tell? infuriating.
