WFMU Fundraiser Show With MC Katie
Please Make a Pledge Here, Thanks!
Every $500 we make, Katie picks a song!

Greetings dear listeners, thanks for your support of WFMU! Tonight for the first time ever my better half, scholar, teacher, author, open-water swimmer and musician Katie Gentile co-hosts. You may recall that Katie joins me twice a year for "radio ping-pong" sessions pitting my world musicky selections with her classic indie rock. Tonight we'll have a mini ping-pong incentive: Every time we hit a $500 plateau Katie gets to spin a track. Pledge for Katie's spins tonight!

If you pledge right here, as usual you can request the custom world music cd I've made for everyone who pledges $75 or more.

This year's cd is Accordions Rock the World!: Irresistible squeezebox-driven sounds from around the globe.

Of course, if my cd doesn't float your boat you can choose a different DJ's premium (cd or otherwise) instead. (Or if you make a one-time or swag-for-life pledge at higher levels you can choose multiple DJ premiums.) You can see the full list of DJ CD premiums at https://wfmu.org/dj-premiums/.

I’m now in my fourth decade on WFMU! Who’d a thunk it? Perhaps you’ll consider celebrating my radio longevity / commitment / obsession to discovering, learning about and especially sharing far-flung music from around the globe by making a $10 per month (or more) sustaining Swag For Life pledge.

If you do, your cup shall runneth over with WFMU swag EVERY year!

This year for a pledge of $50 or more you get our spanking new Eyeclops T-Shirt designed by Robert Beatty plus a WFMU bumper sticker.

And for a $10 per month swag for life pledge you'll receive our brand new Totally Lyred! T-Shirt designed by Greg Harrison!

Bump your monthly Swag For Life pledge to #15 a month (or make a one-time $180 pledge or multiple pledges adding up to $180 or more) and you'll receive our WFMU Bandanarama! designed by Jethro Haynes That level also entitles you to the two new t-shirts, the sticker AND 3 DJ premiums! Bonus: You also can have a WFMU fixture re-named in your honor!

We love dollar a day Swag For Life pledgers - we call that a "Mouse of Today" pledge. And if you "drop a Mouse" on our show (a $365 one-time pledge or multiple pledges adding up to $365 or more also do the trick) you'll receive tons of swag! Including the WFMU Galactical Tour Tee designed by Tremendous Graphics! That level also entitles you to the two new t-shirts, sticker, the bandana AND 5 DJ premiums!

Bump your Mouse of Today commitment up to $41 per month (or make one-time pledge or pledges totalling $500) and you'll get a ten DJ premiums, the three shirts, bandana, sticker, a choice of two classic prizes from our warehouse, AND a WFMU Corduroy Cap designed by Brianna Harden!

But any amount you can pledge is most fabulous and wonderful. And it just takes a $20 pledge to get our fab new Chiller Die-Cut Bumper Sticker, designed by Olaf, discount admission to our Record Fair April 24 - 26 at Brooklyn Expo Center - AND you’ll get in the running for a prize drawing for one of the great LPs and CDs I’m giving away to lucky pledgers this evening!

A premium-cd-level pledge of $75 or more made during tonight's show also gets you into the running for our grand prize, Music Of Morocco: Recorded by Paul Bowles, 1959: A four CD set plus 120 page book released by the label Dust-to-Digital. The package features extensive liner notes by Philip Schuyler, the original field notes by Paul Bowles, and an introduction by Lee Ranaldo. This collection was originally recorded by Bowles for the US Library of Congress who released it in 1960.

From Dust-to-Digital's online introduction:From July to December 1959, Paul Bowles crisscrossed Morocco making recordings of traditional music under the auspices of the Library of Congress. Although the trip occupied less than six months in a long and busy career, it was the culmination of Bowles’s longstanding interest in North African music. The resulting collection remained a musical touchstone for the rest of his life and an important part of his mythology.

What is SWAG FOR LIFE? It's WFMU's sustaining donor program - where we ask you to commit to a small monthly donation and as our thank-you for that commitment, you receive LOTS of swag. Sustaining pledgers are critical to the station's financial health and we are hoping many of you decide to become "Swag For Lifers" this month! It's all explained at https://wfmu.org/swagforlife/.

SEE THE SWAG (what you get at various pledge levels - new sticker, new t-shirts, and lots of other brand new goodies at higher levels) at https://wfmu.org/swag.

And whatever you can pledge to support our very special radio station is so very much appreciated. Thanks soooooo much! dj premiums

(like i am not able to pledge right now, UGH! -- applying for jobs but, well, so is everyone else . . . and all the other negative stuff out there -- but WFMU keeps me grounded! and hopeful!)

Avatar 7:06pm herb.nyc:

Note- I upped my usual annual amount, due to death of any wfmu listeners (via COVID or other). This is inspired by last yr's passing of listener volunteer Bill Weber. RIP. (The Mountain Goats tweeted about Bill, and that they would pledge extra.). and as per those who can’t pledge due to the pandemic, it’s to try and fill the holes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Scott67:

slugluv, I feel you man! Unemployed down here in Australia too. Plus US$ exchange rate adds a bite. But I'm hoping to scrape together enough to do a lifer this year!?? 😎🤙

Avatar 7:09pm TDK60:

Good, herb.nyc! Good morning, Scott67: I'm unemployed too. But I'll scrape funds up somehow. Not all can each year; (and this year, geez!)

Hey, Barba Yiorgi! Great to see you! K8's home, we have drinks, and the tunes sound great!

Now -- to pledging!

@Iokoe Dumpling is our one-eyed tuxedo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Handy Haversack:

Bas, same here! (I was gonna say, "Word, Bas," but wasn't sure it translates into Dutch. Also: Hi, Bas!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Handy Haversack:

(Michael in Brooklyn was me! Don't tell!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm chresti:

There's a foggy-eyed tuxedo that visits our front porch.
Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Mike From Brooklyn:

@ Handy Haversack - Looks like there are two of us.
I think this town is big enough for the both of us though.
Avatar 8:19pm katie:

@Handy mums the word!
And Dumpling is a one foggy eyed tux true. But no depth perception so....Febo rules the boxes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Handy Haversack:

Mike, I hope to god you're right. Otherwise, it's Sparks territory!
Avatar 8:24pm Bas NL:

Hi @Handy! And yes, we do dig 'Word' here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Scott67:

Katie, you & Rob are welcome anytime at mine. 😎🌏❤
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Handy Haversack:

Voltron, Callipygian, Lulu, and Bagpipe are all settled in and chillaxing -- and Kate and I are, too!
Avatar 8:26pm TDK60:

Handy, you have three cats too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Handy Haversack:

We sure do, TDK60. Two Brooklyn ferals and a former deli-cat diva.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Handy Haversack:

Diva former deli cat is the best way to phrase it, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm chresti:

A delicat diva.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Scott67:

Feeling guilty down here guys! 😎
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Handy Haversack:

Scott, your enthusiasm and love for WFMU are worth their metaphorical weight in gold! Don't fret.

Handy, thanks cobber! 😎❤
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Ikeº:

@Katie, right, but weren't you saying earlier that Dumpling almost got a different name? I might have misheard that completely, I was fumbling around with some groceries and listening on a little FM portable thingy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Karen's Mountain View:

3 is the magic number, I always have 3 cats. For some reason it just works out best
  8:45pm M&K:

Weird timing
Avatar 8:45pm katie:

@Ike I miss seeing you and catching up on feline antics in the marathon phone room. Yes, Dumpling went through different potential names, but he really looks like a rectangular dumpling. How's Toast and buddy?
  8:48pm M&K:

Kinda soulful
  8:49pm Brian in Charlottesville:

I’m thoroughly enjoying your show and the collaboration. Big fan of TPSP. I’m a DJ down here in VA at WTJU but grew up listening to FMU in NJ. I’m a swag for lifer. Go FMU!!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Handy Haversack:

Do it, people! Australia!

Rob, Katie, great show! SOOOO glad to have been here!
Avatar 8:54pm Bas NL:

Thanks Rob & Katie! And Ruth in fun central!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Huzzah! Oz is go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Handy Haversack:

Yes! Ruth! Thanks for yet another amazing Saturday of sounds and for making Marathon work.

Bring an appetite next Sat., Ruth. Kate and I are going to bring a truly deranged amount of food to JC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm ºIke:

@Katie, I miss you guys and the phone room too! Toasty and Steve are good. The only problem is that Steve freaks out sometimes when I'm walking around the apt. Maybe he thinks he's still a kitten and that I'm going to step on him. He's a big tuxie but I don't think he knows it. I wonder if he has an anxiety disorder.
Avatar 8:57pm katie:

@ike Both of ours still fear Rob once in a while. It happens. I know ours have anxiety. Parallel process from us probably.
Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Mike From Brooklyn:

Thanks Rob & Katie! This was lots of fun!
Keep those pledges coming folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm chresti:

Thanks Rob and Katie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Karen's Mountain View:

Marathon time is just magical. I miss feeding the crew and answering phones. Had to settle for sending snacks in the mail since giving up on the east coast and moving back to my home state. Might have to drive back for the next record fair though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Rob & Katie. Outstanding job!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Scott67:

Thanks Rob & Katie, great show as always! I will find the dough to donate soon. ✌😎🌏🌞❤
  9:00pm Tamar:

Katie, all I have to do is talk next week—Rob gets to pick all the songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Handy Haversack:

Do it, Karen!
