Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 5, 2021 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

When Harold Bloom wrote about "strong" poets and the artistic anxiety they suffer in the face of predecessor strong poets--Shakespeare after Chaucer, Ashbery after Stevens, etc.--it's that "so poetic" to which he was referring. We read Stevens or Woolf or Dickinson, and the weak among us are amazed. The strong are not only amazed, but deeply anxious, because they know what they're up against.
