I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

The Bryce is back in town! And so am I.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm G:

This song title is actually a standard raga-format name (there are tons of them):

"Raag Basant Mukhari is a sweet melodious form among morning Raagas. It is however difficult to render smoothly. The combination of Raag Bhairav as (S r G m) in Poorvang and Raag Bhairavi as (P d n S') in Uttarang demands both concentration as well as full preparation through intensive training or Riyaz.... This Raag can be expanded in all the three octaves. [It] creates a soothing atmosphere."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Mister Dobalina:

Aww YEAH! Just want I needed right now. RAGA!
  12:18pm Agnes:

Besame raga, bless me raga, raga on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Krys O.:

Fun fact: People still exist who tell you, "All lower case" before giving you their email address.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm David (in London):

Yo Solo! Good to see you here. How's it going?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

OK, the hard-boiled eggs are in their ice bath. Time to salad it up.

Heya Bryce and Blender People™.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm David (in London):

Bryce, I did actually work at MI5 (not 6) for a while (contract, not staff) and, disappointingly, it was actually fairly dull. The best thing, though, was that due to all the transmission aerials on top of Thames House, they had an in-house falcon which would fly around overhead scaring off all the pigeons. He was called Monty if I remember rightly.
Avatar 12:30pm Solo:

David - Yo. Trying to overcome the lockdown boredom by mastering the dreaded F chord. Bring on the return to school! Never thought I'd be saying that...
Bryce - I have gained much intel.

Parakeets are now endemic in London. Weird, but true. For decades they were contained in Richmond in the SW of the city, but now there are colonies in practically every park.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm chresti:

There's a flock of parrots that sometimes congregate in a tree behind our house, very noisy and wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Barney Grubbs:

There's a huge flock of parrots around Pasadena, CA, too. I used to go visit my parents and my brother would keep me out late, then the damn parrots would come through at the crack of dawn to usher in a glorious hangover.
Avatar 12:57pm Bryce:

@agnes - oh yeah, with very, VERY few exceptions the master-disciple thing is the way it's done with indian classical. there are different "schools," called gharanas, with different styles. sometimes it's entirely kept within one family.

there are stories of new students only being allowed to sing one single note — for like a YEAR — before the teacher is satisfied they're ready to get into the actual music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Mister Dobalina:

@Tim...I have not heard of said song, will mos def look it up...har harhar 🤡 🤡
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm coelacanth∅:

David @1230 that's very cool. (i still don't know what m15 is, besides a gun, but cool about the falcon)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm David (in London):

Coela, MI5 is roughly our equivalent of the FBI. That's not a perfect equation, but it's near enough.

Bryce, that's what I wonder! We had sub-zero temperatures here the other week, yet today they are sitting in the tree outside my window happily squawking away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm G:

"Raag Jogkauns: This is a relatively new Raag created by Pt. Jagannath Bua Purohit 'Gunidas'. It is a combination of Raag Jog and Raag Chandrakauns. "

Sivapriya is not a traditional raga name, but then again Subramaniam is doing Carnatic-type music on the western violin. "Siva/Shiva" (a lead god's name) + "priya" = beloved
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Stanley:

David, thanks. What a good article and, yes the finger ponts to Jimi Hendrix, undoubtedly.

i have an album of L.Subramaniam with someone, i'm not remembering who and i can't look for it now
but it's one 45-46-minute song. they had to divide it for the record, but instead of putting 22-23 minutes on each side, they put ~15 minutes on one side and ~30 minutes on the other.
Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Zetti:

As far as bird talk, earlier today we spoke about the very rare bilateral gynandromorph Cardinal half-male, half-female, split down the middle. It was photographed recently in Erie county, Pennsylvania.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm p/b:

Avatar 1:38pm Solo:

Id' nearly forgotten, but all the bird talk reminded me: I saw a woodpecker today. I had no idea they even lived around my neck of the woods.

Backatcha - A UK-based record label focusing on rare and previously unreleased material from the broader soulful spectrum to the outer zones and beyond.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm G:

Jog-kauns (which you played before) is a combo of two older/existing raags, Raag Jog and Raag (Chandra-)kauns.

Malkauns is a much older Raag -- the legend is that it is a super tranquil raag that the godess Saraswati created to get the Shiva to chill out when he was super angry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm coelacanth∅:

a 3-ace property i was taking care of until last year had no less than 4 species of woodpecker. lots of cardinals, various raptors, many hummingbirds, etc. we hung bluebird houses but only saw bluebirds for a few months, unfortunately
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Mister Dobalina:

There is a red tailed hawk in my building complex, it likes to munch on pigeons & I get the pleasure of finding beaks & legs & wings & feathers, scattered about.
Avatar 1:49pm ledzeppelinsucks:

I hope it kills all the pigeons and then all of the Canada Geese.
Avatar 1:50pm Bryce:

@G - the liner notes say she combined jog and malkauns. just happened to give it the same name, i guess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Mister Dobalina:

Next time I see him/her, I'll it to get working on that for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Handy Haversack:

Nice, coela! That's super cool. What does 3-ace mean (other than I sure hope someone else has two pair)?

Mr. D, paddling between BK and QNS 12/24/19, I saw a redtail absolutely red-misting a pigeon it had brought down!

@G: It worked on K8! She just reported how soothing it was as a musical accompaniment to her ablutions.
Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Zetti:

Ok, one more bird story. I recently had to release a hawk possibly a Cooper or Broad-Shouldered, trapped in my empty, but open chicken coop. It was so cool to see it so close.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm coelacanth∅:

Handy i didn't notice my typo... "3-acre".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm David (in London):

I remember coming across a goshawk kill in the woods, once. It had eviscerate a wood pigeon, feathers everywhere, blood spatter in the middle, but the pigeon's head was completely intact and sitting almost upright. It had such a look of pissed off-ness on its face. I had to say "I quite sympathise old chap."
Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Zetti:

I've lost many chickens to hawks, especially the monster sized Red-Tailed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Krys O.:

@David in London: The feral cats we cared for in the 70s would leave similar pigeon head gifts for us as tribute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Handy Haversack:

Ha, coela, I understand. I was all like "do they rate all properties upstate with poker hands?! Is Mohonk Mountain House a full house? Monitcello a straight flush?!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm zopa:

Krys O, tribute or warning?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Handy Haversack:

^*Monticello.

Thanks, Muphry's Law.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm coelacanth∅:

i watched a large raptor...i'm not that good at raptor identification -bigger than a red-tail...
-circling over my sister's smallest dog. the dog's not that small, maybe 40 lb, but it does happen. the hawk would be disappointed ultimately but that doesn't mean the dog wouldn't get seriously hurt in the scuffle. i was prepared to intercept.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm David (in London):

Well, I don't think I'll be able to sue Tarun Bhattacharya under the UK's Trade Descriptions Act. His santoor is totally hypnotic. I keep drifting off into a reverie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm coelacanth∅:

Handy (@155) that's be funny. i think mohonk would be a good hand, better than a full house!
  2:03pm ?:

THANK YOU for this raga reverie. You are rescuing the day.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Threemoons:

Handy--sounds interesting! I did my "I haven't worked in a week, need to save money, got my usual bulk liquor goods" run last night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Michael 98145:

{ love the imagined music library pictured at that site }
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm David (in London):

TTFN Coela.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Handy Haversack:

Michael, yes, thanks, friend! She slept thirty out of thirty-six hours, took a few rounds of Benadryl, and came through OK. It was scary when it first jumped off, though, that's for sure.

Yeah, Threemoons, the precarity economy. Ain't it grand?

Later on, coela!
Avatar 2:44pm Bryce:

bye, coela!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Threemoons:

Oh WOW. Roon looks TASTY.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Threemoons:

Handy--oh noez is Kate recovering from the Shot? Mom had her 2nd Moderna yesterday; she is sleeping and flopping "like a latke" and not moving generally but she is in good spirits. I reminded her to hydrate. As she put it, "at least I know it's working."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Threemoons:

RE Roon--best way to get CDs onto it? My biggest holdback from any digital library is that I have about 600 CDs to rip to it. AND...I once had a proprietery RAID system (meh) with about 300 albums on it that decided to die.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Handy Haversack:

Oof, Threemoons -- but she's right!

No, Kate found out she'd developed a penicillin allergy after getting penicillin at the dentist along with a screw in her jaw! That was unpleasant indeed, but she's all recovered now. The best upshot of it all was that while laid up she managed to move her vaccine appt. up by a month from April 8 to next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Threemoons:

Handy--Ouch re reaction--that can be VERY dangerous; glad she's OK. For future reference, have her get a Medic Alert tag-not the shitty ones from the drug store but the real thing. I have one for my neurological condition. Hang on, let me get linky for you...
Avatar 2:50pm stefica:

this music has me sitting and dreaming. plus, i am listening on the actual radio complete with static as in the old days. thanks, Bryce!
Avatar 2:51pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

late . and lurking . and yay .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Threemoons:

Handy: www.medicalert.org I have been wearing a tag since I was 7. For penicillin allergies, it's important because if G-d forbid you are injured and can't speak for yourself it's pretty standard to give you a honking load of the stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Niall:

Is roon kinda like Sonos, which I like plenty?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Threemoons:

Niall--please say more RE Sonos, I know some folks who had it but that was ages ago...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Threemoons!

And thank *you*, Bryce. This has been fantastic. Like an angry Shiva, I am much becalmed.

Be well, Marmelizers!
Avatar 2:52pm stefica:

bird watchers in the list: saw a woodpecker while hiking in Forest Park (Queens) the other day. Possibly a red-bellied woodpecker, but didn't have time for a good ID. Highlight of the hike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Niall:

So weird to hear Bryce whilst the sun is out for me. Hello from… Putnam County? Westchester? Who knows. I mean, most everyone here prolly knows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Michael 98145:

good health, @everyone
Avatar 2:53pm stefica:

*hike being admittedly an exaggerated term for a Queens ramble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Krys O.:

I love woodpeckers.

Thanks, Bryce & everyone! Be well! Lotsa xxxooo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Handy Haversack:

Cool, stefica! We get a downy woodpecker hanging out here sometimes in Greenpoint, BK.
Avatar 2:54pm Vomit Flowers:

Great afternoon made better by this show, thank you!
Avatar 2:55pm stefica:

@handy: we had a dead tree for awhile in the backyard (RIdgewood) and would get a hairy woodpecker in the autumns. Foolishly took out that tree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Niall:

Threemoons: the speakers sound good, stay in sync and generally it does what it says on the tin. It’s not great for video-audio sync, but that’s not really Sonos’ problem. Anything you want to know in specific?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm David (in London):

Thankee Bryce for a soul-saving show today.
Have a goodly weekend groovers.

(Belated hi Niall. Evening Reverend).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Niall:

Hiya, David in London-town!
Avatar 2:57pm stefica:

Ah, another pandemic Friday. Thanks, Bryce, for your service. Be well, everyone.
  2:57pm mic_a:

Thaaaank youuuu...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Threemoons:

Niall--yeah, does it have a music storage appliance option? I have about 600+ CDs that need ripping. I tried years ago on a proprietary RAID; when the shitola RAID case broke, I lost hours and hours of rip time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Passaic River Blues:

Thank you, Bryce!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm zopa:

many thanks, bryce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Dhanyavaad, Bryce. Take care!
Avatar 2:58pm KenW:

THANK YOU Bryce for this glorious show!
Avatar 2:59pm ledzeppelinsucks:

On a scale of 18 to 37 that was a 22.3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Threemoons:

I mean, I feel bad--a LOT of my stuff is rare, "golden age of CD box sets" kind of stuff, a LOT is NOT available streaming, etc...and I want to use it. It's sitting in a dusty box in my living room now for 4 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm bigkafka:

I'm bummed that I only tuned in for the last 30 minutes. This was what I desperately needed. Thanks, Bryce.
  2:59pm Maria D:

I've learned so much from this show. Will definitely be re-listening to it a lot in the archives!!
Avatar 2:59pm ledzeppelinsucks:

Move it to another room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm chresti:

I watch raptors and hawks flying and perched on partially barren pine trees atop a ridge I see from the window of the tennis booth where I work in Griffith park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Michael 98145:

thanks again, Bryce
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm chresti:

Wow, thanks Bryce!
Avatar 3:00pm stefica:

@chresti fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Niall:

Threemoons, ah, nay; it’s basically a smart speaker with a 1/8” stereo input if you had some appliance that can either host as a local web service or just treat it as a speaker.
  3:01pm Agnes:

Thanks, Bryce!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Handy Haversack:

We shall miss you, Bryce!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Threemoons:

Niall--thx!
Avatar 3:01pm Bryce:

thanks, everyone!!! xoxooooooo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Niall:

Threemoons you can certainly just plug a playback device into it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, skeleton team! Bandcamp Friday next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Niall:

But maybe not what you need!
