Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Brian in UK:

Wendy had some wonderful Gorwydd Caerphilly this last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Irene Trudel:

You're there Doug but the music was a bit loud. I've been having a similar problem with my right ear clogging. Hope you can get yours solved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am fred:

Made it to another Friday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Irene T
Thanks, in an effort to crank my mic level, I cranked the tunes. I'm all ferklempt with the ear sitch. Off my equilibrium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Gina Bacon:

For ear clogs (and this will sound weird) try massaging the area where your eustachian tubes are, kind of pulling downward. And open your jaw all the way. I went through a several year cycle of ear problems a few years ago, and this helped!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings and glad tidings, Brian in UK! Maggie B! Artie! listener Rey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Gina Bacon! I am well past the ear down-pulling and jaw-opening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Gina Bacon:

Yikes. Sorry to hear that, Doug!
Avatar 9:14am TDK60:

Sorry to hear you have an ear problem, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am fred:

Eustachian Tubas was someone's high school marching band project that sadly never came to light
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

What was that, TDK60??
Avatar 9:16am Lisboner Pascal (France):

Howdy listeners and Doug! Lovely piano tinkles, enjoying this :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

I am very sensitive about my ears. When I was around three years old, my adenoids became infected and the inflammation pressed against the auditory nerves leaving me 80% deaf in both ears for about six months. I am still catching up, developmentally.
Avatar 9:17am Lisboner Pascal (France):

yeah sorry to hear about your ear issues Doug, I've had awful tinnitus since I was a teenager, it's a daily task to make it less intense (using meditation)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome aboard, Lisboner Pascal! Bringing the tinkles is my game!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

@Lisboner Pascal
Yes, this latest ear indignity has left me with piercing tinnitus in my right ear. #bitchmoancomplain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am doctorjazz:

Hello Drummers!
(Haven't seen birthday wishes for Henry Threadgill, turned 77 Feb 15, so.....
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HENRY THREADGILL!!!!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Gina Bacon:

Ouch. So sorry you're experiencing that.
Avatar 9:21am Lisboner Pascal (France):

That's horrible Doug. I met my partner through shared tinnitus issues, she's learned to look after herself more, be more peaceful, so there's that but the strange thing is there are so many reasons people develop ear issues & tinnitus -- for her, emotional trauma, for me, I don't know but noise exposure + stress from early age. If it's of any use I am confident that, among many things, meditation can be a relief to those not looking to get rid of it entirely, but to 'take the cloak off', to soften its intensity. Some peculiar places tinnitus can lead you or perhaps already has...
Avatar 9:22am Lisboner Pascal (France):

There are cases where people get tinnitus cos of second-hand smoke!
Avatar 9:22am βrian:

Good morning, Drummers, and all things oto.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am fred:

Good thing I'm not using headphones: my left ear doesn't work, you right one is clogged, that could get quite silent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, βrian! Good morning oto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Maggie B.:

Doug, I also had an ear issue years ago. The doctor vacuumed out what was in there - it wasn't wax - which felt strangely good. Then he sprayed a purple powder in my ear (fungicide!!!). I had to go back the following week for a second treatment, but that took care of it. I hope your issue is as simple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Listener Scott:

Boy that Ray Bryant Trio thing just killed me. Gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

The last time I had an ear problem this bad was right before 9/11. I went to an ENT doc on September 9 to have a wick put in to deliver the antibiotics. I was supposed to return on September 11 to have it checked, but the doc cancelled (there were no subways running anyway) because he was on call at the emergency room waiting for the flood of victims that never came.

OK, maybe time to change the subject.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Scott
Yeah, right?! Magical stuff from an underrated player.
Avatar 9:26am Listener Gregory:

Good morning, peeps 'n' perps!
That Weston was new to me. Nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Listener Gregory! You must be related to Listener Scott and listener Rey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

Having you three here is almost as exciting as the time WR and rw were both in the Drummer Some audience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am HyperDose:

Morning Doug and percussive enthusiasts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Are you HyperDose #1 or HyperDose #2? (I'm getting my #2 right after the show!)
  9:31am Mr C:

What a cool lineup of piano giants...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

You are a cool giant yerself, Mr C. Bestriding the earth like the groove colossus you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Listener Scott:

We come from a long line of Listeners.

Reading back, I hope your ears improve Doug. That's tough, I had a clogging issue that lasted for a few months once, it wasn't painful but became difficult, mentally, to ignore it. Eventually just unclogged one day.

Whoops, didn't realize topic is over.
Avatar 9:34am Listener Gregory:

For some reason, I lost the show and got switched to the stream! Turned that off and turned the show on, and it was right there. Weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Scott
My left ear is fine. So don't cry for me, Argentina!
  9:35am Mr C:

Randy Weston is my shooting forward..

Hello everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
Matt Shipp is a mensch. He is also an amazing follow on Facebook. Very chatty. Generous with personal stories about the music, and witheringly devastatingly verbose against right-wing assholism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

Rich in Washington! Thanks for getting up oily!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

The French pianist François Tusques is noodling on balafon at a few points on this number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am HyperDose:

I love how this is so over the top, but the drums keep everything grounded and flowing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Noel McGhie is the drummer here.
  10:04am Funky16Corners:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Artie:

Not many know that Barry Gordy was a big fan of the balafon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am doctorjazz:

Shipp was indeed chatty, which was done with me. He was particularly psyched that night, it was after the Carnegie Hall performance with Roscoe Mitchell (Jeff G was there, berry we missed each other). Will have to check out his Facebook page (Shipp's).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

Karl Berger turns 86 next month. Ed Blackwell would have turned 92 this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Artie:

Apparently it really resonated with him.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Jeff Golick:

Glad you're having a good time, @UM, but you need to hide behind your children more if you want to make a good impression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Rich in Washington:

UM!
Avatar 10:13am Listener Gregory:

@Uncle Michael, we know you only went there for the kids. Bless you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am doctorjazz:

Hearing loss on one side, 2 causes most likely. Simple ear wax occlusion can do it, and removing it takes care of it. Eustacian tube dysfunction is the other common reason, usually (but not always)accompanies a colds or sinus infection. I've seen ENT's treat it all sorts of ways, steroids, antibiotics, from what I've read, none of it works, but the tube usually heals on its own over time (the time can vary a while lot).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am doctorjazz:

Cancun, huh, UM, jealous (again)! Have fun!!!

My kids and their friend had a band called the Drought when they were about 7 or 8 featuring the gyil, which their friend was learning at St. Anne's in Brooklyn. My son of course made a blog and produced their album. droughttheband.blogspot.com

The Cheetah live, huh. I recall seeing ads in the paper for it. I was too young to go. I think it was huge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

Cheo Feliciano, Héctor LaVoe, Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, Adalberto Santiago!! Each vocalist takes his turn at the mic, singing in front of this all-star conflagration!

Pharoah plays some balafon here. And he is joined on the instrument by Lonnie Liston Smith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Jeff Golick:

Who is playing piano on "Morning Prayer?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
Downward facing Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Jeff Golick:

Uh, never mind; thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Balafon is spelled "bailophone" on the jacket of this Pharaoh LP. In addition to piano and bailophone, Lonnie Liston Smith is all credited with contributing "ring cymbals" and "shouts."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Pharoah Sanders has a new record coming out. On it he is recorded performing along with...

The London Symphony Orchestra
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am doctorjazz:

Downward Facing Doc, of courses!
Avatar 11:08am Listener Gregory:

I remember when Joe Biden went on his "No Balafoney" tour. Yet the instrument seems to play little role in his new policies.
Avatar 11:11am still b/p:

I could get hooked on balafonics.
Avatar 11:15am northguineahills:

I want to hear the audio of that truck's horn....

Coming up next is, in my opinion the grandaddy of all balafon-infused "jazz" tracks. A melody I have heard in my dreams for forty years. To call it sublime would be a monumental understatement.

Now, let's see if the expectations I have ignited will match reality.

Let me know what you think.

@northguineahills
The audio is fucking fantastic. I'll see if I can find the link.
Avatar 11:16am northguineahills:

I once had a balafon, i played it to death (it was an antique)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

Did Luis Bonfa ever record with a balafon, thus becoming Luis Bonbalafonfa?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

I found the video on Twitter that presents today's playlist image. I'll play the audio after the next track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
I don't know. Ask Lola Falana?
  11:22am bigplanetnoise:

Bona Bana Be Bi Bo Bonbalafonfa? Oy. I give up.
Avatar 11:22am Listener Gregory:

My grandma used to play the balafon. We kids always called her Balafonana. True story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Jeff Golick:

sublime here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

Cecil McBee on bass here with Mr. Freeman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

bigplanetnopoise is channeling Shirley Ellis!
Avatar 11:24am Listener Gregory:

This lives up to your hype.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Jay Hoggard on second "bailophone" here along with Chico Freeman. Hoggard is the son in law of the late NYC mayor David Dinkins. #funfact
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Gina Bacon:

That's a tongue twister, bpn! Say that five times fast!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Oh, just a warning. I'm coming back with the same killer music bed again! I know it's frowned upon, but fuck 'em. They can't stop me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
It was a trick question. Of COURSE it did.
Avatar 11:29am northguineahills:

I heard that as Kings of Molly....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Brian in UK:

Back from being manipulated.
Oh that Quitate Tú is soooo good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Gina Bacon:

I love this music bed!
Avatar 11:33am Listener Gregory:

I want that truck at my next party
Your pronunciation of GIF is also sublime.
Avatar 11:34am still b/p:

That's the best! SO unexpected.

Speaking of truck horns, I couldn't find the Ethiopian(?) taxi/car/truck horn ensembles that play music when I went a' huntin' to give someone else a listen. Any suggestions or links?

Good morning! Had to check in to see the truck.
Avatar 11:35am StringOFperils:

Come for the jazz. Stay for the truck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

Here is the video on Twitter of that horny truck: twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

Truck you, rw!
  11:37am rw:

You all probably know about this thing but it reminds me of Llyn Foulkes' Machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GshjrO7CewA I was lucky enough to have a private performance once many years ago.
Avatar 11:37am Will in Norman:

@TDK60 Sabre dance was composed by Aram Khachaturian
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy! Sounds great!
  11:38am rw:

Ha! Doug. What the truck?!
Avatar 11:39am TDK60:

Khachaturian, thanks, Will.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Brian in UK:

I remember the first time I heard Sabre Dance by Love Sculpture (Dave Edmunds) on John Peel's Top Gear. He had to play it twice it was so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

And of course, we'll always have Wendy Mae Chambers' car-horn orchestra: www.wendymae.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am chresti:

Llyn Foulkes Machine is great, rw. We saw him at his Church of Art show at the Brewery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Phillippe Bastille! Will in Norman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Jeff Golick:

Back that truck up.
Avatar 11:41am Listener Gregory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Right after today's show, I will dash out to get my second vaccine jab. Then I'll come back and melt into a pool of Hinky!
  11:44am rw:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am JtotheK:

ahoy Doug, enjoyed the tunes today - thanks! cheerio(s) everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Brian in UK:

Hugo, it was something, think they were doing a session for the show.
How are things in Bergen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey, JtotheK! Whaddya say!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy Hugo!
Avatar 11:49am Listener Gregory:

Apparently, the second jab is more likely to engender a reaction, so take it easy over the weekend. Just tell yourself that your immune system is getting a great workout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Try Googling this song by the Contacts and all you get are links to web pages for children's opthamologists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I am prepared for that. All I have to do this weekend is pick the final tracks for my marathon premium. No pressure or nothin'.
Avatar 11:51am Listener Gregory:

That name (The Contacts) has not stood up well in the pandemic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

This group sounds like some off-brand Bee Gees knock-off. But I like them better. (Shhhh. Don't tell Uncle Michael.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Uncle Michael:

shhhh
Avatar 11:52am Listener Gregory:

Great double bill of The Contacts and Johnny Corona and the Noncompliants. Opening act, The Maskless Mystery Artist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Hugo:

Brian, it's getting better over here. We've been though an unusual cold spell, but the snow's mostly gone, at least here in town.
Avatar 11:53am northguineahills:

danks, doug!
Avatar 11:54am Andrew in Toronto:

Thanks a lot for another great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Uncle Michael:

Thank you, Doug. In a few minutes Hinky Dinky Time is offering liberation. See you there!
Avatar 11:56am StringOFperils:

Thanks for soundtracking my morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

This song isn't very woke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

This final selection is a hilarious absurdity. Hilarious unless, of course, you aren't some kind of cro-magnon monster.
  11:56am Mark R:

This sounds like a song that would be on Rush Limbaugh's iTunes.
Avatar 11:57am still b/p:

If we've listened to this all the way through , do we have to fess up when we run for public office later?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am dutchtheo:

Thanks, Doug! Good luck with the ear problems
Avatar 11:57am TDK60:

Gracias, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Doug, great show!
Avatar 11:58am Listener Gregory:

Songs in which men tell women, "I bring you home all of my pay" have a certain set of assumptions in them that I feel do not bear scrutiny.
Avatar 11:59am Listener Gregory:

Thanks a lot, Doug. This show was the truck horniest ever!
  11:59am bigplanetnoise:

Thanks, Doug! Good luck with your second stick!
  11:59am Ramblin' Ray:

Thanks for the good stuff Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Hugo:

Thanks for that Chico Freeman tune, Doug. Spectacular! Actually, I have a Love Sculpture album, but Sabre Dance is not on it. But lotsa blues!
