Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David (in London):

fred, Carmichael, Sem, chresti, Lisa, Hubig, LOT - hello pals!
Where's Phillippe, though, he usually organises the catering. It's a bit of a bunfight without him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm David (in London):

I fought the law and got a moderate fine. Didn't make much of a story for a song, sadly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David Dichelle:

David: A payment plan would spice it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey there! Sorry, had to run out for more lunch order pads. Who needs what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm doctorjazz:

Hi!
Avatar 12:13pm Really Lisa:

Lemon basil pasta salad please and hello, Phillippe.
And for later, Norway's my guess.
Hey David iL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm David (in London):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm David Dichelle:

Hello P. B., Dr. J., and B. in U.K.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm WR:

is today the day that i finally learn and remember what "arable land" means along with its cousin "pasturable"?

back to work calls for me. listening when i can.
Avatar 12:23pm Hubig Pie:

Boudin noir with applesauce and perhaps a wee dram of eau de vie. Is that in your pantry? I'll place an early wager on Cuba .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Michael 98145:

and here we be
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Brian in UK:

It is mainly arable farming (crops) here in South Shropshire, hence the lack of local cheese making.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm kuba:

@dave - watching them get filled with more gigabytes of remote learning screencasts....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David Dichelle:

A very good day to you, TDK60, WR, and Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm David (in London):

All hail TDK. And WR, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Michael 98145:

that damp photo looks like much of our locale
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm David Dichelle:

Kuba, sounds fun?
Avatar 12:25pm TDK60:

I recently saw a young Jean Redpath on an old Pete Seeger live folk TV show from '66. The show was called Rainbow Quest and found on Youtube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm David Dichelle:

Michael: More wet has probably now washed any remaining white off the photo, in fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm David Dichelle:

TDK: Sounds like a great find - will have to remind myself to look for it later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Phillippe Bastille:

@hubig just a wee dram of eau de vie? I'm not sure I want to crack the seal on a handle of the stuff for just a wee dram.
Avatar 12:27pm TDK60:

I got to see Oysterband in '18; great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm coelacanth∅:

Good morning friends, enjoying this set a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm David Dichelle:

And hello Sweet Corn Lizzie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Phillippe Bastille:

@carmichael I have vintage 1993 Crystal Pepsi, does that work for you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm HyperDose:

Hey DJ David, liking the sophistication I'm hearing. A wheat beer sounds delightful right about now, David (in London).
@Phillippe Is this a ghost train? Have I perished?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm coelacanth∅:

Phillippe i'll pass on the microwaves...have you got some honey with irish tea added? some butter with corn muffin added?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, HyperDose!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Phillippe Bastille:

It's more like the train in the sky from Dirk Gently, hyper
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm kuba:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm kuba:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm David Dichelle:

Kuba, how about a Sterni?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm kuba:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm HyperDose:

@Carmichael You must have been elated when Pepsi came out with the "more than OK" ad campaign.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm coelacanth∅:

Phillippe you can use it for packing fragile items
Avatar 12:42pm Sem:

The Span, how lovely it is.
Avatar 12:43pm TDK60:

Forgot to say hi back to London David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm David (in London):

I've saved a cheese sandwich for Handy if he gets on at the next stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm WillCrete:

Thanks David. Enjoying again the ballad set, hearing a nice continuation from last week with with this additional story of a "Kitchie Boy"/ Kitchen Boy figuring in Lady Diamond.... Except he fared a bit better in last week's ballad narrative (Roud 105).... ha! Love how all these ballad roads and characters cross and overlap across the tradition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm chresti:

Hi back to David in London!
Avatar 12:45pm TDK60:

Hola chresti over there. || I'm going with Costa Rica today.

My pleasure, WillCrete - and yes, some kitchen boys and princesses are luckier than others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm coelacanth∅:

i missed it. did the kitchen boy have his eggs cracked? his rump roasted? his calves butchered?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm David Dichelle:

Coel: That is indeed the long and the very short of it.

Greetings, Travelers! I was clinging to the outside of the car for the first hour but listening the whole time! Didn't miss a song -- the Bluetooth speaker can reach the car when it's parked right outside!

OK, I missed a couple just now going to the corner for spinach. But I was here for the Roud. I'm calling it a win!

Hi spodi! \\//
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm David Dichelle:

WR: It probably buffered when you paused it. Maybe refresh/restart the stream?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm WR:

I'm enjoying the roud, will meet y'all at the random road. and I found details on Bryony Griffith, quite a lady, vocals and fiddle and more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David Dichelle:

You take the high road, we'll take the low road...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Yvang:

Hello hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm David Dichelle:

'Evening, Yvang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm WR:

ah, got through the buffer, so will have to go to the archive for the vack announcement through Zachary Richard. PS, Zachary does pronounce his last name more as the French would rather than as regular anglo American would.
Avatar 1:22pm StringOFperils:

Random road, take me somewhere warmer than here. ( -17 C with the windchill factored in )
  1:22pm spodiodi:

Thanks David! No pain today, thankfully 😅

Hi chresti! \\//
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm David Dichelle:

String: That shouldn't be too hard...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm YETI BOB:

Time to spin the (metaphorical) wheel:

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (which could be a band as well as a place!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm David Dichelle:

Yeti Bob: Good guess and great band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm YETI BOB:

"Music popular in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines includes big drum, calypso, soca, steelpan and reggae. String band music, quadrille and traditional storytelling are also popular."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm YETI BOB:

I want to hear some "big drum" music :)

Mauritius 🇲🇺
Avatar 1:26pm Hubig Pie:

Me thinks, Zachary Ree-chard used to be known as the cajun Mick Jagger or something like that
Avatar 1:28pm StringOFperils:

I was impressed that Zack sounds exactly like he did in 1979. Haven't heard his recent work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm WR:

Hubig Pie, you mean he sang about no satisfaction while living in a château in France?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm kuba:

@YB so a mash-up/featuring of St Vincent (Annie Clark) and The Grenadines (some rock band from Birmingham, Al, apparently)?
Avatar 1:31pm Hubig Pie:

WR, I think it was playing the squeeze box with a rock and roll swagger
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Handy Haversack:

Ah, filled roll with cheese? That will do nicely!

This is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm chresti:

@Warm Leatherette
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm YETI BOB:

@Kuba: Produced by Jim Eno from Spoon, so they might actually even be good ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Handy Haversack:

There, salad dealt with. Body and soul ought to hold together another few hours.

Hey, David (iL), Bas, Hubig, chresti, TDK60, YB, spodi, chris, Michael, Sem and all other upthread friends!

Hubig, yeah, there's a seriously overpriced "organic grocery" on the corner. For most things, it's too much (like, e.g., $6 for egg and cheese on a roll!), but it has a good deal on large containers of spinach usually and also, oddly, on good organic eggs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Michael 98145:

Good to hear Alpha again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm YETI BOB:

If it's an organic egg, and good cheese, and a high-quality roll, I'd pay $6.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm chresti:

Hi Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm YETI BOB:

Actually, I'm starving right now, I'd pay more than that :)
Avatar 1:44pm Bas NL:

Hi Handy! And good reminder.. got to find me some food too..

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm chresti:

That sounds like the Bi-Rite by my son's place, Handy, where I spend all my money when we visit San Francisco.
Avatar 1:46pm StringOFperils:

Hash cake fallout. Everybody's ravenous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Handy Haversack:

I am not sure they use the good eggs at the sandwich bar, YB.

It's especially galling in that it's on the same block as our only local diner, which was priced out by rising rents *three years ago* yet the storefront is still empty. (It was $2.50 for egg and cheese on a roll there, and they had homemade hot sauce!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm David (in London):

Yeah, sorry about that. 'Hashcakes on a Train' proved to be slightly challenging (as well as being a poor concept for a movie...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm YETI BOB:

@HH: I've often thought that there should be some kind of tax, or similar penalty, on landlords who leave properties unoccupied for an extended period. It's bad for neighborhoods.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Handy Haversack:

Mothereffin hashcakes on a ... yeah, it kind of runs out of steam. Or diesel.
Avatar 1:49pm Really Lisa:

Wow my first thru third grade Hebrew is helping me understand *some of this song. That, and my sister's Hebrew name was Yehudit. Neato.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm chris in the redwoods:

Bi-Rite is one tasty place, chresti.
a bit later i'll be driving to get eggs from a local farm. $10/dozen - honor system.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm David Dichelle:

Lisa, the text is a poem by Dahlia Ravikovitch: www.newlibrary.co.il...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Handy Haversack:

It's *endemic* in this neighborhood, YB. Only banks and drugstores, it seems, can afford the rents they are now asking, and it seems somehow to be worth more to the landlords to leave the storefronts vacant until, presumably, nine more banks relocate here, than to put in neighborhood businesses. Our (excellent, excellent) video shop closed *eight* years ago and is still vacant. Proprietor still lives in the neighborhood.
Avatar 1:51pm Really Lisa:

Thanks, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm chresti:

Handy, same in my son's neighborhood and in LA, empty storefronts and high rents.

A Hoi, David and intercontintal dwellers and subway paddlers, (Thailand/Siam!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm David Dichelle:

Ahoy there, Dutchtheo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Handy Haversack:

There was a dog daycare/walking/rescue place a block over that was super helpful when Bagpipe was a puppy. Their rent tripled from $7K/month to $23K/month and they had to close. Now it's a boutique hotel. I like to loudly ask Bagpipe if he remembers peeing in it when we walk by their restaurant.

Bas, there's some of you in this song!

Avatar 1:57pm StringOFperils:

Bagpipe should saunter in there, and give a go one more time, for old-time's sake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm David (in London):

Handy, same thing here, except instead of being empty, they are filled with insanely gentrified shops. My friend Jon (an old Stoke Newington face) came back from abroad a while back, and to him it now looked more like Hampstead (very ritzy part of town) than the bohemian, non conformist punk land of yore (the one morphe would remember). Sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, plenty of those here now, too, David. Sigh.

Handy, same problems up here in Manhattan. Luckily some mom & pop shops still hang on.

Yes, Jan's shows are all great on the Sheena Stream, including one dedicated to Dutch music.

YES, Bas. Please send more immediately!

Also ... "stampot"? Is that right?

I have only managed to catch Jan's show a couple of times, but it's always been great.

I will, Bas. I will!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Stanley:

chrest - a pal and I had a Friday-Sunday trip to Amsterdam. Decided not to bother getting a hotel and, apart from a couple of hours in a park, we didn't sleep at all!

  2:32pm Funky16Corners:

Hey David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Handy Haversack:

Yes, we had some, Stanley.

I swear we did more than eat when we were there, though.

We met our Edinburgh friends in Amsterdam. One of my fave stories is that they went back a few months later. They returned to EDI and caught a cab home with one of the Famously Chatty Cabbies of Edinburgh. Totally standard issue: white hair, blue eyes, deep Edinburgh accent. He of course asks them where they came in from, and when they say "Amsterdam," he laughs and gives a knowing "oh ho!" Rob says, "Oh, no, nothing like that -- we were just there for a conference." And the cabbie says, as if heartbroken to realize it, "Nae coffeeshops? Nae space cakes?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Lisa, take care!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm David Dichelle:

And hello, Larry!
