Avatar 12:44pm Roberto:

There was also a great cover of this Melanie tune released last year for NJ covid relief.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm spodiodi:

Peter, i'm not doubting that, but Rodney claimed something about his getting Bowie played/breaking him in the US in the doc i saw a decade-ish ago

The snow is falling off the roof at my house. We got about four inches of very fluffy snow. And luckily it happened yesterday and last night, so driving this morning was a piece o' cake. Damn! I forgot to buy cake while I was out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Handy Haversack:

Heh, these things happen, sphere! The fellow at the pet food store sent home a pig's ear for Bagpipe, who knows *exactly* where it is and is doing his level best to induce guilt every time I approach the kitchen right now.

i've seen potatoes explode in there, and can attest to my sister's' being a big mess, most of the time, due to exploding food.

we sold our microwave when we sold our apartment (it was built in), then we lived without one for more than a year, then several months ago, I went out on trash day and found one within 10 minutes. works great, but it's only 900 watts, so a little slow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Charlie:

All's good here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Handy Haversack:

Never actually owned a microwave. And since one would take up like 40 percent of the apartment at this point, that is likely to continue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm steveo:

just get one big enough to sleep in and you're set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm spodiodi:

we currently have the biggest microwave i've ever had, and we use it to mostly reheat tea :-B
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm spodiodi:

you could stretch out in this one, steveo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm steveo:

thanks. let me drink some tea first, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Charlie:

I never had a microwave before the house I live in now (it's built in). Managed ok without, but I like using it now for various things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm coelacanth∅:

if i had a microwave oven i'd use it only to reheat leftovers, which means i'd use it about once/month or 2.
3 times i've been offered one for free, and declined.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Phillippe Bastille:

How could anyone possibly get that smell of burnt popcorn in their house without a microwave? Damn luddites.
Avatar 2:22pm Michael:

For a while, we had a microwave/toaster combo thing. It was huge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Charlie:

never heard of a microwave/toaster!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Charlie:

I have a hot air popper, so I've never made popcorn in the nuke-ro-wave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm coelacanth∅:

i do reheat tea now and then, maybe 1-2X/month. a microwave oven would save me a good 30-60 seconds and only use double the electricity, over an electric stove. i guess i can justify it.
Avatar 2:24pm Sem:

This Pugs is getting to me. Thx, Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Phillippe Bastille:

we've transitioned to an induction cooktop. Can't get gas where we are and electric ranges suck. Induction comes with its own challenges, however
Avatar 2:25pm βrian:

We have a dedicated popcorn pot, an old ceramic steel beast from the 70s. Makes great popcorn.

Can someone please pass the nutritional yeast?
Avatar 2:26pm Michael:

It was from Sears. I never saw one before either. Had a microwave side and at one end a little door pulled down to reveal tow toaster slots. It saved space in a way but like I said was quite large.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm steveo:

someone gave us some microwave popcorn before we had a microwave so we just made it in a pot. worked fine. also, i am making microwave popcorn now, hurrah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm coelacanth∅:

i've made popcorn in someone else's microwave. something like 3/4 of them pop. all of them pop in the air popper.
Avatar 2:26pm βrian:

@PB: We have induction and gas side-by-side. Best of both worlds, though the induction is a little noisy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm coelacanth∅:

holy crap i forgot all about this song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Handy Haversack:

I was regifted a combo six-slice toaster with egg-poaching attachment and never even managed to get it set up because all of the counter space we have does not, technically, exist. GAR-DOCH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Phillippe Bastille:

@ βrian when we use cast iron, there's not any real noise. Some of the clad cookware can get kinda buzzy though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm coelacanth∅:

Phillippe i much prefer fire but i rent and for the past 15 years it's been electric. i still don't like it but i've got it down.
Avatar 2:32pm βrian:

Ours always sounds the same, no matter the cookware or whether it's on a low simmer vs searing the ceiling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Phillippe Bastille:

@coel my biggest issues with electric is how long it takes to heat up and when you turn it off, it's not really off for a while. There's no radiant heat with induction, so off is really off -- its just whatever heat your cookware retains. You can get a couple cups of water to boiling in about 30 seconds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm coelacanth∅:

(re:spector don't forget thief and douchebag in general)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Phillippe Bastille:

@ βrian I think we've collected our cast iron from a better class of thrift stores

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm coelacanth∅:

Phillippe yes those attributes are one thing i don't like but i work with. i know at what point before the thing (whatever the thing is) is finished to turn the power off. like with ramen i drop the noodles in then the seaweed and turn it right off.
roasting seeds in a cast iron skillet i turn the power on, put the seeds in and turn the power off as soon as the coils reach a glow.
it heats up fast here. the one in my last apartment it was slow. (and sparky)
