January 22, 2021: Is joy still possible?
This radio show denounces explicit and implicit racism. It condemns the culture of White supremacy, which enables the brutalization of Black people and other communities of color. It supports Black Lives Matter and the movement it stands for. |

Listener comments!
Fridays have been my sanctuary for 26 years.
Greetings, bobdc! Listener Gregory!
The only fine is for bogarting the beat!
Welcome welcome, dutchtheo! StringOFperils! TDK60! Rick from SC!
I'm in my lawn chair right now! (I had already started planning this set when Gary unveiled his show Wednesday. I took it as a positive sign!)
Oh I know. You've been up at 6am since before we were born.
You can't swing a cat and not hit a great show on WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio. (No animals were harmed during the writing of this comment.)
End of the week, start of the geek, eh, Brian in UK?
If a light is plastered when the switch is flipped, is the wired forest still dark? Let a Greek philosopher put THAT in his kylix and drink it.
Our coffee always comes with a side of glue.
(Very popular on the state fair grounds, I'd imagine.)
Good morning, βrian!
Yassou, Doug and listeners
I am ready for some Tsipouro. I hope you're pouring!
So involuntarily uplifting!
I have a love/hate relationship with Buddy Rich. Maybe more accurately, I have a less hate/hate relationship with Buddy Rich. It's complicated.
I'm not sure if Jerry every actually played Drums for real, but he loved drums and drummers and had a set in the house. His son, Gary, learned drums from having them at home.
I think I may have recommended here before Mel Tormé's Buddy Rich biography. It is really something, even if it is not complete.
I always found Buddy Rich too Buddy Rich-heavy. I agree, he was an amazing force driving a big band (and his bands were always amazing). But his presence was ill suited, as you say, to the small group setting. Nevertheless, Charlie Parker reportedly LOVED Buddy Rich's playing. So go figure.
"...and I felt like getting high."
WOOOOOOOOOO!!!
"...they're all WASTED!"
"WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"
Now THAT is a striking image to associate with this. I like.
There will always be a comfy cushion and a well-stocked hookah ready for you over here.
This is him singing. He was a triple threat.
"One of al-Atrash's most unusual and distinguishable traits was his voice. High and mellow at the start of his career, it evolved into a wider, deeper sound. A person not familiar with his work would find it hard to believe the singer in "Ya Reitni Tir" (1930s) and "Adnaytani Bil Hajr" (1960s) were the same singer. His singing style was deeply passionate."
Happy to see you, viecher!
All the threats!
@Mr C
As long as the records aren't being broken.
Yes indeed, Jeff "Oh Shit!" Golick!
"Listening stylings of Listener Gregory"??? I don't think so.
Dave plays beautifully the role of the sweet-natured curmudgeon. In real life he's just sweet-natured.
That comment makes me want to cry. (Happy tears.)
I am expecting a full report on today's broadcast, in triplicate, on my desk by five o'clock.
From your lips to the world's ears! Thanks for sharing that.

One keeps hoping that the hate is generational and will die off. Such thinking is a delusional fantasy.
It is uncommon. But unmatched was the fact he was an "all-star" for all but the first year of his career.
It is always tough when a sporting hero passes but those memories will never go away.

I'll take that any day of the week, and twice on Fridays.
For some of us, Hank Aaron transcends so more more than sports.
@TDK60
Holding on tight with both fists.
Thanks Doug.
Stay well everyone
