Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

  2:00pm DavidJ:

Hi Dave and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm fred:

I saw Gerald Cleaver with Joëlle Léandre and Mat Maneri at Instants Chavirés in Montreuil in January last year. So depressing how few I've seen since, but that show was a good memory
Avatar 2:02pm Sem:

Hello, Dave, the Stork, and DavidJ.
A good day for music for a free world.

Hey folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Dave Sewelson:

hey doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm fred:

I guess Cecil Taylor could be inspiring to a drummer. He definitely had a percussive side
Avatar 2:39pm northguineahills:

A Cecil album I have!
Avatar 2:39pm northguineahills:

(first one I got)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Dave Sewelson:

yeah ngh...
Avatar 2:44pm Sem:

Lovin' this Cooper.
  2:44pm Gerald:

More Cooper to come
  2:46pm Gerald:

Cecil really does justice to the idea of the piano as a percussion instrument
Avatar 2:46pm Sem:

Alright!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm doctorjazz:

This Cooper is cool!
Avatar 2:54pm duke:

Shoulda been listening, but I got distracted. Glad I'm here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm WR:

great memory, beautiful.
Avatar 2:57pm northguineahills:

Even (before last year), musicians still have to hide or show up w/o instruments b/c they had a tourist visa, not an artist visa. So, my friends and I had to find them instruments (if you use a laptop, or electronics, much easier to avoid)
Avatar 2:58pm northguineahills:

One band I was acquainted w/ from Europe got turned away at JFK b/c of the mistake....
  2:58pm Alberto:

Jerome Cooper! what a great discover for my ears ans spirit! Super selection!
greetings from Spain (9pm here now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Dave Sewelson:

welcome duke and Alberto

Avatar 3:03pm northguineahills:

ok, there's something wrong w/ me when I can't spell correctly en espanol. One more time, "bienvenidos". (I still can't spell in english).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Brian in UK:

What-Ho Mr Sewelson & listeners.
This sounds like avant-garde Frederick Delius.
Avatar 3:04pm northguineahills:

(I used to have a welcome mat that said, "Bienvenidos").
Avatar 3:05pm northguineahills:

What year is this Roscoe Mitchell from? (sounds like his latter period).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm chresti:

Hi free world!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Brian in UK:

fred, I saw William Parker & Hamid Drake in a trio a while back, I could not take my eyes off the drummer.
Avatar 3:05pm northguineahills:

same here, Brian....
  3:08pm Gerald:

This was commissioned in 2009
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Dave Sewelson:

hey chresti and Brian...
Avatar 3:12pm northguineahills:

danke schoen, Gerald, enjoying your selection!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, beautifuls!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm fred:

@Brian: I never got to see Hamid Drake. Which is a shame.
Though at this point I'd sign for a live show with Andy on kazoo, I'm that desperate. I'm a dance fan, but not desperate enough to want to see Andy perform. Might get there soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Dave Sewelson:

DOUG!!!!!!
Avatar 3:15pm northguineahills:

Doug has entered the building!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Brian in UK:

Are we going down the Danny Wallace route.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm chresti:

If you're French, the first answer is no, right fred?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Doug Schulkind:

So much wisdom from Master Cleaver. So much love for Master Cleaver.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm fred:

@chresti: sadly, I have no clue. I got a letter from a dear friend today and I don't know how to reply, I'm so cut off from French society (and language)
  3:23pm Gerald:

@northguineahills thanks for tuning in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm chresti:

@fred, it's something a friend of my ex experienced, working as an interpreter/liaison when they did television productions over there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm fred:

@chresti: Come to think of it, the French response is "yes, as you, wish, my lord". Backstabbing not excluded, but we're a nation of brown nosers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm doctorjazz:

Great set selection, wow!
Last got to see Mr Cleaver in Philly, at Johnny Brenda's (with Nels Cline and Larry Ochs), and a house concert at a friend's house that is up there with my best live music experiences! Hope to be able to catch you live again soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Pittsburgh legend Roger Humphries on drums there with Horace Silver. I'm hardly a native 'Burgher, but I know enough to revere Humphries. The good citizens of Detroit feel similarly regarding Mr. Cleaver.
  3:31pm Gerald:

DRUM LEGEND
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm fred:

@Doug: were you an army kid? You were in so many bands in high school, you must have moved a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm chresti:

With this person, she always got a "no, c'est impossible!", on her first try, which was expected before finally getting through after several tries.
Avatar 3:32pm Sem:

Needed that Muddy, wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm fred:

@chresti: Yeah, regular answer. Usually means a bribe is required, but sometimes chocolate might be enough
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Brian in UK:

Gerald, nourishment is what we crave.
  3:36pm ?:

I made it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I was in so many armies.
Avatar 3:37pm Sem:

I remember that band, Doug.
  3:38pm cooper-moore:

Preach it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm chresti:

Ha Sem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm fred:

Too bad "so many armies" split before recording a proper record, it would have changed hardcore noise folk history
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Dave Sewelson:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm chresti:

Recording technology has improved, is improving.
  3:44pm Gerald:

COOPER-MOORE FOR PRESIDENT
  3:44pm Altered Beets:

Has anyone played along to any kind of weather, just improvising? Like, outside, covered enough where it doesn't mess you up, maybe under an open pavilion?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Doug Schulkind:

My head is in the bass drum in the house.
  3:45pm cooper-moore:

I decline the nomination!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm fred:

@Doug: is that a new yoga position?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Dave Sewelson:

Altered Beets....sound goes faster in the cold....
  3:46pm JD:

Go brothers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Dave Sewelson:

JD is in the house...watch out....
  3:47pm Gerald:

JDA in the house
  3:49pm Altered Beets:

There's so many variables to play with, right? It would always be a gamble, never the same way twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Makes me want to pull out Blakey's "Drum Thunder Suite." But not until this show is over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Brian in UK:

I am imagining a train leaving a big city station crawling through the suburbs and getting up a head of steam as it heads along the tracks but the title belies that notion.
