Greetings everybody.
Wow! I know David. B. Doty through The Well - online community similar to Echo and still around. I've heard his music before but never on WFMU.
Avatar 12:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, heya, Dean and Sweet Corn Lizzie!!

@ SCL: Have never of The Well ... or Echo. Are they music-centered communities?
  12:35pm
Dean:

Uncle Michael is an early and avid Well proponent. Founded by Stewart Brand, I believe.
  12:36pm
Dean:

An online community, not strictly music, though John Perry Barlow was also a proponent.
  12:40pm

This is outsider music, I guess.

  12:46pm

The music feels more outsider than the painting, IMHO. Some more outside than others.
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Well, from today's playlist I'd only call Larry Aeschbocker and Neil Dick "outsiders" -- but then again, down with labels.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:49pm

at least the major labels.

Avatar 🥁 1:08pm
spodiodi:

Beatless track reminded me of the band belonging to the brother of one of the players of the band of which the Furniture Huschle track reminded me. nice set, Tony
  1:08pm
Mark R:

Like if you found some lunatic raving on the subway platform and you recorded him, he's an "outsider," not part of the mainstream of music, outside of even the "underground" or "indie" music scene. Some might say there's an Emperor's New Clothes aspect to the appreciation of such artists, but those people are strictly squaresville, baby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
coelacanth∅:

you are not lurking, you are listening out there.
Avatar 1:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, spodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
coelacanth∅:

Mark, hmmm. . .
...but it's not just a matter of sucking, right? like, you can suck pretty bad and not be "outsider"; and you can be interesting and even musical and not be considered outsider...no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
coelacanth∅:

Mark, hmmm. . .

(^that's weird)
Avatar 1:21pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Coel: Absolutely, yes.
Avatar 1:22pm
Tony Coulter:

except, I assume you mean "You can be interesting and even musical and BE considered outsider."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
coelacanth∅:

oh. yes Tony you assume correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
coelacanth∅:

(suddenly my computer's all sticky)

...but my question remains unanswered.
it seems that "outsider" just means essentially unknown.
Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

@ coel: It's a really slippery term, but I think it implies an unawareness of what's going on around the person, musically speaking, and a lack of awareness of how they sound to someone else. Someone who knows they sound unusual, or sets out to be weird, is probably not an outsider. People who make some of the strangest outsider music can think they sound "normal." They list the Beatles, or whatever, as their main influence. But they can still be very musical in their own weird way.
Avatar 1:34pm
Tony Coulter:

But, of course, the above is just my own personal definition.
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

These days there are plenty of "fake" outsiders in both the visual arts and in music. Meaning, they know full well what they're doing, no matter how whacked out or primitive they seem.
Avatar 🥁 1:40pm
spodiodi:

i like your definition and addendum, TC

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Yes the Well and Echo were early community sites, not about any particular subject, though the Well has a large Deadhead community.

I think of "outsider" art and music as being uncredentialed - outside the system of degrees, MFAs, galleries, etc. Though this applies more to art than to music.
