Elektra also had The Stooges (& Jobriath!), so they did sign some more "uncommercial" acts. Hardy anything compares to Forever Changes, after all - & the rest of their material reflects the weird exquisite L.A. balance of poetry, lounge, garage, folkrawk, psych & more they were.
No doors - no Iggy, Alice, probably Ozzy, maybe even Bowie as we know them. Certainly no Bunnymen, Mazzy Star &tc. &tc. Well - Joe said it already...

I like a lot of the Doors' stuff, but they're one case in which the "myth" of Morrison has sort of overshadowed the quality of their material. I like most of their early albums, hits, etc. It's the same w/Nirvana....a good band (with only 3 albums!) whose fame is out of proportion to their actual talent, thanks to some kind of martyr/angelic-junkie myth.

First heard Hutchinson here earlier in the pandemic, then watched his holiday livestream -- seems like a swell guy with a batch of great songs.

so what? no one is arguing against the merits of Forever Changes. This myth that it's Elektra's fault, that they chose to make the Doors a huge success at the expense of Love, is laughably not true.

Wow I am honestly shocked to learn that Love didn’t have hits. I guess because I grew up in LA and listened to alternate radio - they seemed major. Have their records, etc.

Agree about the Doors - loved when I was 14, now ugh.

Elektra easily could have afforded to promote both bands, and would have loved both bands to have been huge. Love wasn't interested. So when the band doesn't give a shit, why should Elektra keep trying?

DG & seen from the other direction - the myths actually obscure the work. I have a strong anti-populist (popularity) streak myself... & it's still true.

A band or artist can't control the mythology that fans or writers put on their musical legacy, especially after a key member dies. If Love had done tours and appearances to promote their music the history may definitely have been different in terms of nationwide success. But they weren't interested.

When ,listening to music that is too "popular" and surrounded by "myth," take the track out of context and pretend you've just discovered it on a comp or it was unreleased at the time. It will help with a new appreciation.

Imagine if, say, "Break On Through" was cut by a band that disappeared a week after it was cut and it stayed in a vault for 30 years. Once released, it would be heralded as a major classic and WFMU would not stop playing it.

I've heard that Arthur Lee was also into very subliminal and at that time underground/trendy marketing. He started to walk around wearing one sandal and the other barefoot. He wanted people to recognize him as the guy with one sandal. "Who's that guy with one sandal?" "Oh, he's in that band". And that was one of his marketing ideas for promoting himself and his music, at least that's what I heard somewhere.
