Avatar 3:58am
HyperDose:

My mother taught me to sew when I was little when one of my beanie babies ripped (tiny stuffed animals from the 90's that we thought would make us rich one day if we collected them). Super grateful for that because it really is a useful life skill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58am
mariano:

NikiA: No, fortunately. Kind of a miracle considering some of the places I've lived. My theory is that I'm schlubby enough to where I could conceivably be an undercover cop. I was called po-po by some kids in Bed-Stuy once as I walked past the stoop where they were hanging out.
Avatar 3:59am
NikiA:

Yeah seriously @Rich, this is trippy and I love it. It helps that I am also smoking some good good

Good lord, your dog is better dressed than I am!

Emily I love how your sets can be upbeat, but it feels like there's a certain line you don't want to cross to keep everything in the "chill zone". I dig it.

Yes, he is the only dog I see here. Now if we're talking about dawgs, then that's another story. Lotta cool dawgs in this chat 2nite. d^_^b

Bend Sinister:

Thanks, one of my alltime faves. "What's There Left' is also epic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am
mariano:

Speaking of police matters, anyone know that Gainsbourg song "You're Under Arrest," with the chorus (sung by an American guy) that goes "You're under arrest, 'cause you're the best!"? It's 80s, past-his-prime Gainsbourg, but I always loved that part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18am
mariano:

I love the heraldic handle, Bend Sinister.
  4:19am
David in London:

Yeah, Nabokov and The Fall, good moniker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
Emily L:

Gainsbourg full of surprises. Only discovered his reggae album this year. Need to get the Sylvie Simmons bio on him
Avatar 4:21am
HyperDose:

Not familiar with Serge Gainsbourg. Makes sense I missed him since his album came out the year I was born, but a quick google shows it was recorded in both NJ and Paris. Intriguing, thanks for the rec!
Avatar 4:24am
HyperDose:

AND he covered the Hungarian suicide song? Ok this is going to the top of the must listen pile.
Avatar 4:24am
slugluv1313:

yes trippy indeed . . . ya, i thought i kinda recognized that Simon and Garfunkel song! . . . was diving into the Xmal Deutschland rabbit hole . . . which led to Propaganda ("Goth" magazine that featured Xmal Deutschland a number of times -- gorgeous photos, & pretty sure i still have my issues) . . . that led to Genitorturers, Zeena LaVey . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26am
mariano:

Wow, David. I've read a goodly selection of Nabokov, didn't know he wrote one called Bend Sinister. TIL from DIL.
Avatar 4:27am

Tuxedomoon <3 <3 <3
(STILL trying to figure out where i saw them in NYC, early 1980s . . . there IS a book about Tuxedomoon, but last i checked, it was long out of print)
Avatar 4:31am
slugluv1313:

@HyperDose -- YES! Gainsbourg does Gloomy :)
(my Mom always said, "You think it is depressing in English? You should hear it in HUNGARIAN!""
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32am
mariano:

slugluv: Is that "Gloomy Sunday," banned in Hungary in the 30s because it supposedly drove some people to suicide?
Avatar 4:36am
slugluv1313:

@mariano -- yup! ahhhh my *lovely* heritage :)
but yes, it was banned because it really was driving people to suicide -- i think in Italy, other European countries too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43am
mariano:

slugluv: One of the signature desserts in the New Orleans recipe book, the doberge cake (pronounced "do-BAZH") is Hungarian in origin. And it makes one want to live. It's obscenely sweet. The best one is from Gambino's bakery (not affiliated with the NY crime family far as I know): gambinos.com...
Avatar 4:50am
HyperDose:

I don't know. You could fit half a key of Bolivian marching powder in one of those cakes, easy. 👀
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54am
mariano:

HyperDose: Well, they did it with pizza parlors in the 80s. Come to think of it, considering all the powdered sugar on beignets, they'd be the perfect vehicle. Everyone always leaves Café du Monde looking like they were auditioning for the role of Tony Montana.
Avatar 4:57am
slugluv1313:

@mariano -- oh yes! what my Mom and Grandma used to call Seven Layer Cake! there were bakeries near where my Grandma lived (Clifton/Passaic NJ) that made the cakes from scratch, was always a treat when we had that -- years later, one of my best friends in high school was also Hungarian, describing the cake to her, she was like, "Oh, Dobos Torte!" (was always so "envious" that she had learned Hungarian when she was a child) -- pronounced "DO-boss-TOR-tay" (one of the few things i remember about Hungarian is that usually the accent falls on the first syllable)
Avatar 4:57am
HyperDose:

While I can't say I've been to Café du Monde, I have been treated to Serendipity 3 in NYC. Absolutely outstanding.
Avatar 5:01am
slugluv1313:

hah! considering that this Hungarian pear liquor that my Grandma had back in the 70s was the first time i ever saw a whole pear in a bottle of booze . . . i have no doubt that Hungarians have stashed other *substances* similarly :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03am
David (in London):

A bottle of Zwack Barack should see us right. A Hungarian once told me, "Only soldiers and madmen drink that."
Avatar 5:03am
slugluv1313:

awwww love Ronnie's version of Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory (thinking of Johnny and Sylvain <3 <3 <3)
Avatar 5:03am
HyperDose:

So THAT'S why Harry & David pears are so juicy. They're soaked in Hungarian hooch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04am
mariano:

slugluv: Oh, that's really interesting. I guess doberge would be a Creolization of dobos, maybe? Speaking of sweet Hungarian things, I love tokay. I hardly drink at all anymore, but I love a good dessert wine. That pear brandy is something else too. A Hungarian guy I met years ago gave me a slug and laughed at the obvious wallop it gave me.

HyperDose: Serendipity's amazing. It's been years since I've been there, but I think I'm still feeling the vestiges of the sugar high.

Avatar 5:14am
HyperDose:

@mariano My grandparents took me there when I was young(er). Afterwards, my grandpa took me to get my first pocket knife. I foolishly cut myself later that day and learned to respect the blade. It's a cherished memory.
Avatar 5:17am
slugluv1313:

do not think i have ever had Tokay?? unless it was back in the Grandma-sneaking-us-kids-booze days :)
i used to REALLY like Egri Bikavér ("Bull's Blood") though -- but have kinda avoided red wines over the years, i think they give me headaches -- ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17am
mariano:

Wow, HyperDose, what a memory indeed.

The word serendipity has a really interesting origin; it's the old Arabic name for Sri Lanka: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21am
mariano:

*...it comes from the old Arabic name of SL, that is.

slugluv: Maybe it's the sulfites? At least that's what I've heard when it comes to reds. Tokay is amber in color though, so you should be good. Oh, and I guess the preferred spelling these days is Tokaji, guess I'm behind the times as usual: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 5:24am
HyperDose:

I guess the ice cream business as a whole was kind of a serendipitous venture. I for one will never turn down a chocolate dipped waffle cone with two scoops of strawberry.

Mrs Stanley's Zumba class has started and so has the strange music that accompanies it. I had to look it up and it's a sort of autotune, Latino dance stuff; Ricky Martin, Shakira sort of thing, I believe. Terrible stuff.
