  9:26am Gina Bacon:

These lyrics! So great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Listener Gregory is conveniently forgetting to mention the 900-pound gorilla. In the back of the stall.

Pee Wee Crayton was SHREDDING all your important documents right there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

"Young Beichan" is Child ballad Number 53. Also performed under the titles "Lord Baker," "Lord Bateman," and "Young Bekie."
Avatar 9:47am northguineahills:

Doug has gone full David Dichelle....
  9:48am Really Lisa:

Aha.. so the not so random Child ballad, versus David D's Random Roud set. Love this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahills
I'll take that as a major compliment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

"Young Beichan" is also Roud ballad number 40 (for those keeping track at home).
  9:51am Really Lisa:

I feel seen 👀
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am WR:

i cannah but wonder where my pint is for me to take a quaff upon hearing the final verse of such fine recounting .
Avatar 9:51am TDK60:

Dichelle does get pretty Roudy, over there in Leipzig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Hail and welcome, WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am dutchtheo:

Davids Roud is not random, his road is, though. Love Ewan MacColl, his pronounciation of daughter sounds like the dutch version: "dochter"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

Stonehenge is situated on the Salisbury Plain, I do believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
My daughter, home from university for holiday, gets annoyed when I call the pup "dogter."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Andrew Waterloo:

My dad named his cat Doji. I asked "what is that Japanese?" he said.. no.. it's dog... d.o.g.
Avatar 9:59am Listener Gregory:

I got into a lot of trouble singing about my instrument of joy, but of course, I am not a "folk singer."
  9:59am Really Lisa:

K, sitting down and just listening. I keep posting inaccurate info this wk, quite unintentional. Sorry, Roud not random, road is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am dutchtheo:

and what about the pup, gets s/he annoyed, Dougster?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Put that thing away, Listener Gregory. This is a family show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Andrew Waterloo:

But these are good Christians Gregory
  10:00am davefromtoronto:

that's more like f**k singing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Artie:

Squishy Tropes for all my friends. Try the pistachio, it's delicious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

Sounds delicious (delicious sounds), Artie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Stanley:

Funny to hear a song about Geordies sung in a West Country accent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
Not like coals from Newcastle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Stanley:

I'd like to make comment about acccents on this one but I'll desist
Avatar 10:05am still b/p:

Had it in mind a while to gather a few voices and rehearse Last Train to Clarksville in the style of that fine set of songs.
Avatar 10:09am Listener Gregory:

Have not seen an actual salisbury steak for 30 years, and I have loved every minute of that.
Avatar 10:11am northguineahills:

I got to go to Stonehenge when you could wander and touch the stones (i was 17). Yep, on the Salisbury Plain.
Avatar 10:14am northguineahills:

@Stanley, how do you feel about Yorkie and Doric accents??? 😉
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
We called it "mystery meat."
Avatar 10:14am Martinibomb:

There's a to scale copy of Stonehenge here in Oregon. I've been to that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

I prefer the full-scale Martinibomb, thank you very much!
Avatar 10:16am still b/p:

Salisbury steak from a plastic pouch made for a few classic 70s meals.
Avatar 10:16am Martinibomb:

I think I'm not righting it write -- it's full-scale copy of the original I just need more coffee. It's your fault doug that's what you get for having an early show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Still b/p
Mmm! TV dinners!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Martinibomb
I'm not a morning person either.
  10:18am Dean:

Like @northguineahills, I, too, saw and touched Stonehenge at 17. I make Salisbury steak with some frequency. It's delicious.
  10:19am Sam Segal:

Greetings, Doug and Drummersomebodies!
Avatar 10:20am northguineahills:

Lusophone Africano! (the african hair)....
Avatar 10:22am northguineahills:

Salisbury steak in elementary school was one of my favorite days (taco day was crappy, and pizza day was just ok [I had really subpar cafeteria cooks as a kid])
Avatar 10:24am Listener Gregory:

@Dean, how do you make it? I assume if one doesn't use mule meat and apply half a cup of salt to the gravy it could be good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

Wait?! Is that THE Sam Segal?! What a fancy crowd we've got here!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, Dean! Good morning, Stonehenge-touchers everywhere!

Good Morning Doug AND Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Wandering in the KWilderness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am listener Rey:

Hi there Doug and drumma peoples. Had to take a break from work to say Im enjoyingn these most excellent mozambiques. The similarites between Pello's & NYC-style are very evident. This is not so true when comparing Eduardo Davidson's Pachanga vs. NY-style pachanga
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am listener Rey:

This track appears to have very little mozambique in it.
  10:33am Dean:

Ground beef (mince) with grated or finally chopped onion, a Tb or two of Worcestershire sauce, some catsup, mixed and molded into patties. Fry 'em up, add onions and mushrooms to the skillet, beef broth, and simmer. I usually snoop around for a recipe to follow, but I don't have an exclusive one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

@lisener Rey
Not much mozambique with Johnny Zamot's track either. They are coasting on the fad.

Next week, wall-to-wall Eduardo Davidson!! (Not.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am listener Rey:

Salisbury steak was my favorite Hungry Man frozen dinner selection
  10:35am Dean:

I think I've used this one: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ree-drummond/salisbury-steak-recipe-2126533

Oh, yeah, add bread crumbs and egg to the mix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Dominick:

ah hah!
Avatar 10:39am Listener Gregory:

Thanks, Dean. The bread crumbs and egg stop it from just being hamburger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am doctorjazz:

Never cared much for salisbury steak, but have only had the diner version, the home made may be worth trying.

That Billie Holiday doc sounds like a must-see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am adamdoesit:

Hi Doug and drummers.

Thanks for the tip on the Billie Holiday doc, Doug. Adding that to my watch list. Always up for anything having to do with Mal Waldron, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am chresti:

Morning Doug and drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome aboard, adamdoesit! Yes, I highly recommend it. Howdy, chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 10:49am Martinibomb:

Avatar 10:49am northguineahills:

I need Sunny Murray to dissolve my brain.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Jeff Golick:

Did someone say jazz?
Avatar 10:51am still b/p:

"Hungry Man vs. Manhandlers."
There's a summer movie blockbuster for ya.
A recent conversation led to a look-up of Manhandler ads, and subsequent to the viewing, the jingle (Frankie Laine!) keeps getting shouted out, of course. I think the jingle is what started the conversation.
Avatar 10:51am Listener Gregory:

Or anti-jazz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am chresti:

Hello Martinibomb!
  10:53am Dean:

I like Sunny Murray's take, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

This track was composed by the trumpeter on the date, Jacques Coursil, who died this past June. There are two alto saxists here, Byard Lancaster and someone named Jack Graham who is a complete mystery. Anyone out there know anything about Mr. Graham?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Jeff Golick:

(I'd wager this Murray is earlier than '69?)
  10:54am Jim:

Ahoy Doug! A quick note to say that this set is FIRE and that I've received my listener schwag from the WFMU vault. At long last I have my HEARTMELTERS ❤️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

You'd win that bet, Jeff Golick. It was a typo. Try '66.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

@Jim
So sorry it took so long to get you your swag!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Jeff Golick:

  10:56am Really Lisa:

Peace, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

Peace and love, Really Lisa
  10:57am Jim:

@Doug absolutely no worries!!! Least of our troubles. Also on a gentle Pittsburgh note, go easy Joanne Rogers, beloved classical pianist and life partner of the sweetest man on earth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Jim
Joanne Rogers was no less a saint than her adored spouse. I just read a lovely tribute to Joanne on Facebook by the great pianist Matthew Shipp of all people. Fred and Joanne were universally loved.
  11:01am Jim:

@Doug that's such a wonderful thing to imagine, Shipp sending up the tribute. They were truly phenomenal folx and I'm grateful to have even barely rubbed elbows with them during my brief Squirrel Hill tenure. Hope the 412 is decent for you and yrs these days. (Hey, sidenote: finally using the chat! off to make an official account to receive my sought-after badges!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Matt Shipp explained that he was on a panel assembled by ASCAP that bestowed an award on Joanne Rogers. She ended up sending Matt a trove of recordings by Johnny Costa, the pianist/music director for Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. Sweet story.
Avatar 11:05am Listener Gregory:

The name of this label seems to translate to Discs of the Oak. Is that what they were made of??
Avatar 11:06am northguineahills:

This Trovesi is very Braxtonian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am alanr:

Is this the soundtrack of the USA at this moment?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahuills
Trovesi performed and recorded with Braxton, so... possible!
Avatar 11:07am northguineahills:

yes, anthony braxton is now an adjective....

@alanr
The USA soundtrack of this moment would carry a parental-warning sticker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am viecher:

(Now with an actual account) @Doug that story is so terrific! Costa absolutely achieved a feel for that show. It's a lightness you gotta love. / This Trovesi is bliss
Avatar 11:09am northguineahills:

I think Anthony Braxton and Wolf Eye's "Black Vomit" would be an appropriate sndrk to the USA todya....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Actual viecher
I live in Squirrel Hill. Not far from the Rogers homestead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am viecher:

I remember you saying that a few years back! I discovered your show twenty years ago when I was living in that neighborhood.
Avatar 11:10am Andrew in Toronto:

Thanks for the Trovesi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Andrew in Toronto
Prego!
Avatar 11:17am Listener Gregory:

Would like to see a double bill of Okukuseku's No. 2 Band with Konono No 1. Then we would really see who is No. 2.
Avatar 11:18am northguineahills:

@Gregory, you'd get a Kasai Allstars Congoese-Ghananian super group....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@viecher
After the Tree of Life massacre here, Trump came a few days later to everyone's disgust. There was a rally and march to protest his visit. Milling around with my assembled neighbors waiting for the march to commence, I found myself standing in front of the Rogers home. It was a poignant but powerful moment.
Avatar 11:24am northguineahills:

@Doug: You moved to Squirrel Hill in 2011? (I have no concept of time anymore).

I lived in Pittsburgh in 1977 (I was 1).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

OK, I want everyone to vote:

Madam Hassanah Waziri's voice...

Velvety

or

Not Velvety
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahills
July 2010. (gulp)
Avatar 11:27am TDK60:

Hmm...not really "velvety."
Avatar 11:29am northguineahills:

I miss July 2010, t'was a good month...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

So far that's one vote Not Velvety. Maybe TDK60 will decide this all his/her self!
Avatar 11:30am TDK60:

But maybe Nigerians have a different way of judging vocals. [?]
