This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello Explorers!
  6:55pm chresti in tennis booth:

Hi Flash! Listening for the first hour or so at work/on the way home. Had a last minute fill in for a co-worker.
Avatar 6:58pm Flash Strap:

Hi chresti! always happy to see you in any event
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Happy gnu ears to you Flash and to all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm listener james from westwood:

Evening, Flash and all!
Avatar 7:02pm slugluv1313:

hiya flash, skeletons, everyone!
happy to be here with you all :)
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Hello hello darling Doug, listening James, ranking Slugluv!
Avatar 7:03pm slugluv1313:

hi chresti!
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Liebezeit on this track of course
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

this whole album is so damn creative – such an A+ project
Avatar 7:08pm slugluv1313:

ahhhhhhh YES this Holger Czukay is such a perfect healing elixir
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

@slugluv: he is such a wizard, his music has an incredible effect on me no matter the mood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Bebey's tracks are immediately and delightfully recognizable as his. Even BEFORE he begins singing.
Avatar 7:11pm slugluv1313:

agreed! re: Czukay and Bebey
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

so true Doug, he's so distinct no matter the mode (vocal, instrumental, electronic, acoustic, etc.)
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

one of my favorite of his protest songs, it's such a rave
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

"Believe me, there is something wrong with the system
Oh yes, definitely
We need a change to come, a new order
Cultural, political, economically, whatever
A new order, something to make us feel free to eat our banana and dance on the new track"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm listener james from westwood:

@Doug: Agreed on Bebey! I feel that way about William Onyeabor and Omar Souleyman, too.

In other words, gods bless WFMU.
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

War Ina Babylon is about as good as a record can be - endless replay value, exquisite production from Lee Perry, and a masterclass in call-and-response with backup vocalists, who are perfect throughout
Avatar 7:19pm Frog Mover:

Happy New Year all! What's this creature feature art?
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

hey Frog Mo! Max Ernst, The Barbarians
Avatar 7:21pm TDK60:

Hello Flash! Yeh, that Max Romeo album is one of the greats. || I still have eggnog.

  7:23pm Shaw:

Greetings Flash and all. Killer set so far!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Little Danny:

This past week I came across the term "flash strap" in the wild. I had no idea it was a thing.
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

Hiya Shaw, many thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Aitch:

Hi explorers all.
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

@LD:what is it?
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

Hi Aitch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Little Danny:

A leather band for a horse's nose.
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

@LD: haha wow - it basically began life as a crazy character name for a movie i was improvising while on acid, representing the character's sadism and adventurism. used it as a pseudonym when first getting involved with online. always bemused that it's stuck to me for whatever reason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Little Danny:

Amazing. I've always wondered.
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

Frog Mo can attest, he was there
Avatar 7:29pm slugluv1313:

although as much as i adore Max Ernst's art, i gotta admit that i love Leonora Carrington's and Dorothea Tanning's creations even more :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Little Danny:

"Little Danny" began as a joke in college. Saddled (no horse pun) ever since.
Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

i always assumed you were very tall & that it was an inversion
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

@slugluv: i think Ernst is pretty hard to top visually but Leonora Carrington is one of my very most favorite artists & her writings represent some of the finest surrealism has to offer. some of the best short fiction ever written imo. & her novel is a masterpiece. a true genius, a guiding light
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Little Danny:

Not very tall but just over six feet. But yeah, drunken humor related.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm doctorjazz:

Hello Explorers!
Avatar 7:42pm slugluv1313:

@Flash Strap -- i believe i have read some of Carrington's fiction -- which novel are you thinking of?
and it REALLY hit me when i saw Tanning's "Birthday" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (had seen photos but never in real life) -- i was totally knocked out, mesmerized -- and realized i had to dig deeper into her work and Carrington's work again :)
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc!
  7:49pm Shaw:

Had an intense but great salvia experience listening to Harmonia once
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

The Hearing Trumpet is the novel I meant - she wrote another, a nonfiction about her time in the asylum. Her short stories are worth tracking down exhaustively, though they seem to appear in different collections w/ lots of overlap. her paintings and drawings are amazing but i didn't know how blown my mind could be till i read her writing
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

salvia + music is dangerous but you can just live decades inside a 3 minute song so it's kinda worth it
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

"dangerous" – i mean, easy to freak out
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

incredible performance from Harmonia here, would give a pint of blood right now to hear it without those clicks
Avatar 7:54pm Frog Mover:

Never heard this before but damn
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

re: Leonora carrington: there's also a children's book called Milk of Human Kindness, very weird little collection, that has the funniest story i've ever read
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

@frog mo: only four tracks on this release, wish there was a hundred more, but they're all so illuminating
Avatar 7:56pm Frog Mover:

Who's drumming on this? Dinger?
Avatar 7:57pm TDK60:

These guys were ahead of the curve; so minimal. It was '75, you had to try something..
  7:57pm Shaw:

This is great! I need to get ahold of more Harmonia
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

@Frog: Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru
Avatar 7:58pm Frog Mover:

That makes sense, cool!
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

@shaw: Musik Von, Deluxe, Live 74 is a holy trinity imo
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

@FM: would love to hear more of him with them - i think there's another on Doc. 75 that he drums on tho
Avatar 8:00pm Frog Mover:

@Flash: yeah his drumming is my favorite part of Guru Guru
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

@FM: agreed. i think he guests on Deluxe too but i don't remember what parts
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Leonora carrington stage set: i.pinimg.com...
  8:04pm Shaw:

Thanks Flash! Deluxe is the only one I have. Will have to seek out the others
Avatar 8:04pm Frog Mover:

I'll never forget seeing Faust mad as hell after having their show canceled cause they wanted to shoot hay and fireworks in an underground club. almost died with them I guess
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

@shaw:my pleasure! of course then that leads us into the worlds of Cluster, Moebius, Roedelius, and Moebius & Plank....
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

@FM: haha so perfect, i wonder which Faust that was – there's 2 Fausts now but I can't keep them straight
Avatar 8:08pm Frog Mover:

It was this Faust I believe. They had a giant crazy looking hay blowing machine parked outside the club.
Avatar 8:09pm Frog Mover:

Real bummer to not see them play tho, in Prague too
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

70s Faust split into 2 distinct Fausts which i think were both intermittently operating around that time, but i can't keep the personnel straight honestly
Avatar 8:10pm quinn:

welp I always love this
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

REAL bummer not to see them play, yeah. scary fire potential though!
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

Quinn! welcome aboard friend!
Avatar 8:11pm slugluv1313:

@Flash Strap -- thanks!
yes, i think i must have read some of Carrington's stories when i was in college? late 1970s/early 1980s -- i had a class that was called something like "The Avant Garde in Literature" -- we read a lot of experimental, surreal stuff -- thankfully i still have the books from the class! (now if only i could FIND them! sorting through all my books, music, etc. -- daunting! and i always feel like i make more of a "mess" than when i started, hah!)
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

i hear that slugluv
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

this Heldon LP dedicated to Robert Wyatt; guitar used is a 1954 gibson les paul
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

Richard Pinhas playing, of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Little Danny:

Wow, this is great. Totally new to me.
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

@LD: i've heard a lot of Heldon / Pinhas but haven't really studied it or made any sense of it yet so it still always feels new to me!
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

just started checking this Besombes album out - i've enjoyed so much his Libra album & Besombes-Rizet that it was high time I look into this one
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

he can be so brain-meltingly psychedelic, love the way he edits
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm WR:

late saying hi. missed most of the first set but since listening doing a lot of wikipedia and discogs wandering inspired by the playlist and comments.
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

hi Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm coelacanth∅:

- been tuned in for a while
really cool stuff!
Avatar 8:38pm slugluv1313:

was looking for Carrington's works at my local library's website -- The Hearing Trumpet is nowhere to be found in their inter-library catalogue :(
however, i just found this -- apparently the novel has been reissued, YAY! nyti.ms...
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

@slug: i saw that the other day, very good news indeed
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

we have 2 copies - one with Carrington's wonderful original illustrations, and another with (oddly enough) her son's very dutifully copied replicas of her illustrations (his are greatly inferior but there's a charm)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm WR:

you played a short track by Tokyo Kid Brothers. Looking at Japanese Wikipedia and discogs can see they have many releases. on my watch list, curious what their other work is like.
Avatar 8:41pm quinn:

i always love this one too
  8:42pm Francis:

Wow that Tietchens track was incredible!
Avatar 8:42pm slugluv1313:

@Flash Strap -- SO COOL! thanks, again, for reminding me of Carrington's writings :)
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

me too WR - until very recently i only knew Throw Away the Books! which is really excellent (reminds me of J.A. Caesar) but i really want to know more of their extensive catalog
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Hi Francis! i agree
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

my pleasure Slug! i worship her work in all mediums i just really try to highlight her writing when it comes up because it feels underappreciated at every level & it's all-time great stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Little Danny:

This is incredible, I don't think I'd ever listened to this Cluster album before.
Avatar 8:45pm Flash Strap:

me too Quinn it's so bucolic and blessed
  8:46pm passiflora:

I've been listening to this album lately
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

@LD: it's good. creeps up on you
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

hi passiflora! i've been thinking i need to listen to it more & this is strengthening my resolve
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Little Danny:

I'd only been previously familiar with Curiosum and Zuckerzeit. That was more the Motorik drug I crave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm chresti:

Home at last! Great soundtrack for the ride home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm doctorjazz:

Enjoying the sounds (family liked it better when I couldn't use the main stereo...)
Avatar 8:55pm TDK60:

Yeh Chresti, great traveling music. Fun how a lot of that 70s German stuff remains groovy.
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

Chresti! back just in time for some toasting
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

they'll come around Doc, we'll get 'em hooked

Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

Hiya Jay!
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

beautiful dub of Watty Burnett's Rainy Night in Portland (1977)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Clifffiscal:

I liked how the guitar was responsible for the majority of the reverb/delay on that Keith Hudson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Hey Flash, looking at that Max Ernst and this dub is making me woozy - in a good way!
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

@cliff: I totally agree - one of my favorite things about Hudson is that he does that a lot
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

Hi Franco! happy to woo your wooze
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Clifffiscal:

yeah...that separation is an intriguing detail. Love it too.

Exactly, doc.

Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

Dub of Prince Alla's 1979 "Lot's Wife" - not sure if it's the same Version as the B-side or a different mix
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Aitch:

Love a bit of dub. Very nice
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

Some of Tubby's best dubs were for the Freedom Sounds label, among them that Prince Alla single
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Dead on, Flash. One bizarre nightmare, that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm WR:

want to give this Horace Andy 10 stars!
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

re: man ah warrior - i believe most copies come from the 77 reissue, and my god it sounds like a 77 LP! but its first release was 73 and it's so ahead-sounding
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Aitch:

Only knew Horace Andy from Massive Attack era. Clearly they were fans.
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

@WR: it's so perfect!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm chresti:

Horace Andy is great.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm chresti:

Problems, both of them, are among my favorite Horace Andy songs.
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

@jay: amazing record all through
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

@doc: i don't know if it is but Hudson does do cool stuff like that - i think on this LP he has Augustus Pablo on harmonica instead of melodica, for instance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm chresti:

"Don't let problems get you down, it will put you in a hole..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm doctorjazz:

As it went on, I was more convinced.
Gonna skank my way to bed with this Perry Thanks, Flash!
