A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I could look at this brice marden for hours. Wish I was seeing it in a quiet museum...but then i wouldn't be sitting here with you playing music. so this version is better.

Hi Handy, I lived in Newington a few years back at the foot of Arthurs seat! I'm temporarily out in Craiglockhart at the moment. Where are you based?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Handy Haversack:

fionnland, I'm in Brooklyn, NYC. Two of my closest friends moved from across the street to Edinburgh five years ago when one of them got a faculty job at the university. Kate and I were actually in Scotland when they got the news! We hope to be there again as soon as we're vaccinated!

Yes, my friend looked at Arthur's Seat from his desk window before they moved around the corner last year.

YB, I should have thought through the context a little more before announcing to Kate, "There's a documentary about Death!"

I'm going to restock vodka, gin, rum, and vermouth today, Threemoons. I am taking no chances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Trouble:

@prudy: it's coming along. still in a restrictive brace. lots that i can't do, but my fingers are getting stronger and allowing me to do more everyday. thanks for asking...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Threemoons:

@Handy I would have picked up a good bottle of absinthe but I am broke even though I am temping at the moment--bills to catch up on etc. But at least I have a solid foundation of basics and a bottle of cheap bubbly for the 20th.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Phillippe Bastille:

My next door neighbor reported an extremely large bald eagle flying over our yards this morning. Maybe it was the one on the great seal that decided it had enough of that nonsense yesterday and came to life?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am adampsyche:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Handy Haversack:

Wow, nice, Phillippe! Are they around your neck of the woods regularly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Threemoons:

@hwait didmo If you think this chat board isn't political you are obviously very new here. WFMU is a station for thinking people and cultural critique, and also a fantastic forum for under-represented artists. Yes, as a family, we are as lefty as f**k and if you don't like it, then also please step away from all of the culture that Left leaning causes have brought to the US. That would include your right to vote if you are anything other than a White male, public education, PBS, and arts foundations. The Right NEVER votes to fund culture. We do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Threemoons:

@Phillipe that is AMAZING. I had the privilege of seeing a pair of bald eagles over the course of several days many chilly early Novembers ago...it was after a late storm and they were rebuilding their nest. This was in Upstate NY near an aqueduct. You don't realize how strong they are--the female flew up to the nesting platform (built by local water rangers) with a branch that was at least 3" thick and 7' long, and she was holding it with only maybe 8" trailing on one side, and she flew straight up with it like she was carrying a twig.
  9:50am oscarfate:

song request: anybody singing Which Side Are You On?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am steveo:

i'd like to see some longhair eagles sometime
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Threemoons:

@hwait would that be the side of the fence that is pro-invading Government offices, trashing them, and flying the flag from the losing side of a war in its halls, while resting in the fact that because they're White they won't be shot on sight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am karlward:

steveo: Clay was playing Deep Purple a little while ago, I'm sure the longhaired eagles were flying then
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Goyim in the AM:

hwait -- the moment you say "both sides" -- as if there were two, not one or many -- you make a political judgment and statement. The decision of what sort of conversation is ok in a shared space is also a political judgment. Dig yourself.
Avatar 9:52am Listening Out There:

Hope you're mending well, Trouble...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Threemoons:

Yeah, the one downside of sleeping in a little bit today was that I missed Clay's show..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Threemoons:

@Goyim--here to say I love your handle.
Avatar 9:54am Andrew in Toronto:

Hi there Trouble and everyone else!
Avatar 9:54am Mike W:

apropos of nothing more than the bass on this sounding great — after a night and morning of hard static (some of which was pleasing) the 91.9-FM signal is back and STRNG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Handy Haversack:

Now I'm picturing a bald eagle starring in a new narrative video for "Signs."

Supposedly there are some in Upper Manhattan, but I have never seen them. They have made a real come back in Western Michigan -- we now see them whenever we go out there after not seeing them at all for decades.

We had some pretty wild eagle close encounters in Maine this summer. They were windsurfing and fishing while we were fighting to keep our canoe from capsizing in the same wind. Pretty wild!

@hwait, OK, sweetie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Trouble:

Since all wfmu dj's are volunteer human beings, and we are not representing a major corporation that silences our beliefs for marketing purposes, it is natural for DJ's to talk about what is on their minds. Especially in this fragile moment of growing hatred and the rich getting richer these feelings are the source of many of our musical interests as well. I will not change my ways to avoid offending people who like what i do and not what i say and believe. That said, i don't enjoy my feed being filled with lots of bluster so I sometimes avoid topics that are important and outrageous to me because i don't see the benefit of going back and forth in a space I chose to fill with great musical sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Threemoons:

@Handy actually bald eagles have a few permanent roosts up near the Cloisters in the Bronx--apparently they tend to return to good fishing spots every year and have fairly fixed nesting sites (which is why the water keepers upstate built the platforms for them).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Goyim in the AM:

@Threemoons -- it's what I used to call the fill-in shows for Nachum. Thanks!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Threemoons:

@Trouble WORD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Phillippe Bastille:

@handy @threemoons there's a nest not far out of our line of vision that a male eagle has been occupying the past two falls and winters. There are a LOT of osprey nesting in our small river and they run him off in the summer. The big one our neighbor saw today was larger than him, and likely a female based on her size, if my neighbor's research is correct, so maybe we'll have a nest of little eaglets to watch this summer. The eagle population is starting to pick up here (just outside of Annapolis). We saw three of them hanging out in a tree that was maybe a 15 minute boat ride from our house. The Maryland Eastern Shore (referred to by a former governor as "the outhouse on the other side of the bridge") has a couple thriving populations.
  9:59am Peter in SEA:

@threemoons; Thank You
@Trouble: Preach & Spin, girl!
thank you WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Threemoons:

@Handy and most of NY State has Golden Eagles, terrain allowing. IIRC they are the largest eagles in the Northeast and they are truly spectacular creatures. I'll never forget, one time I was in the car with Mom. We were driving a few hours North to a friend's place in Orange County on 9W and had a gorgeous view of the Adirondacks. Then, in clear view, we saw two golden eagles mating mid-air--a blazing wheel of gold feathers and wings. It was amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Handy Haversack:

Threemoons, there's one river paddle we have done in Michigan several times, not a long one, but that goes to a sandy bank in an otherwise reedy, wetlands river where bald eagles nest. So every year we see them and their young flying around there, and the water gets deep and clear enough to tie up and go for a dip. That's the life!

Also: WORD, Trouble!

@PB, ah, I remember that governor! That's from back in the day when there was such a thing as a conservative Democrat in Maryland. I come from that "outhouse". I never thought it was a very apt description. The Eastern Shore isn't gross and stinky like an outhouse. It's just boring.

Eh, implying that Black protestors only show up to loot Foot Lockers is pretty damn racist. Own it.

@Passaic it was weird to be shown that info, i’m not a particular fan of either but it’s still just a weird confluence. i know ariel pink has some...gender-relations issues? from stories that emerged some years back. so maybe he’s a natural as a tr***er

@Trouble I haven’t read any Nina Stibbe, but my to-read pile is so big I’m having to apply to the council for planning permission. I’ll add it to the next floor up! I managed to get my reading habits up to steam again over the break. Now I just want to read and not work at all. Currently reading an excellent romp, Harrow the Ninth (lesbian necromancers in spaaaaaaaace).

Over the break I read David Mogo, Godhunter (godfall in Lagos) and Mouthful of Birds (short stories, Samanta Schweblin).

Current pile:

Bruce, Honeybones
Devlin, Engines Beneath Us
Chiang, Stories of Your Life
Whitely, Greensmith
Hill, The Breach
Mills, The Restraint of Beasts
Pheby, Mordew
Hansen, The Way to Hudson Bay
Dickinson, The Tyrant Baru Cormorant
Clark, Ring Shout
Clarke, Piranesi
Anyuru, They Will Drown in Their Mothers' Tears
Jarboe, Everyone on the Moon is Essential Personnel
Merbeth, Fortuna
Jemisin, The City We Became

Can we all take 2021 off and just read and listen to the radio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Threemoons:

@Slaboch try importing the URL directly into whatever desktop player is installed on your system? I am using the live stream player with no issues. Then again I'm in Chrome...try that maybe?

looking at newspaper footage yesterday: the lack of police and their previously seen over the top weapons was shocking. as wanda sykes said: "are they completely out of rubber bullets and tear gas?" this demonstration showed clearly law enforcement 's fear of the peaceful black lives matter protests vs their tolerance of a white foaming at the mouth mob.
Avatar 11:31am βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Threemoons:

@Trouble YES YES YES. It's a common thread in all of my social media avenues. Those terrorists were treated with kid gloves. Let's pretend for a second what would have happened if the mob was from the DC branch of the NOI instead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Threemoons:

And while I have individual problems with Farrakhan, I have no issues with the NOI as an institution. When I went to law school in DC, they were the ONLY local law enforcement in many very poor parts of DC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am YETI BOB:

Only 13 arrests?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Threemoons:

@gwtg that’s what burns me up so much — they just shooshed them all away, as if each one of them had not just committed a felony, into the surrounding area. in 2013 they shot Miriam Carey after she made a u-turn at a nearby checkpoint (you may guess why).

it doubly burns me up to think that there will be no ramifications whatsoever for ANY of them. it’s definitely being watched by those who would send (or be) the next fascist to roll down the chute
