Three Chord Monte with Joe Belock
In addition to reviving the legendary DMZ, guitarist J.J. Rassler has put
together the Downbeat 5, who echo the pop-punk spunk of acts
like the Muffs & the Queers with the classic punk sound he helped pioneer
back in the day. Also appearing, the Flaming Sideburns, who are the latest Scandanavian rock sensation. They claim they will save rock and roll, and it's hard to argue with this quintet from Finland!

and more. Famed for playing unusual venues (Buddhist temples, caves,
subway stations), the band produces live performances of the highest
order, whether in acoustic or electric mode, and this is only their second
visit to the states, doing a short tour around the Terrastock fest. Today,
we're lucky enough to land them on Brian's show and you'll hear the band
in full effect: hurdy gurdy, keyboard, theremin, bass, flute, tin whistle,
sax, ripping electric guitar courtesy of Kurihara, and special guest
vocalists Damon and Naomi!

Dame Darcy Monday, October 21st, 2002, 8pm - 11pm
on
Scott Williams's show
The last time we saw the one-&-only DAME DARCY, she was deep in
conversation with a piece of lasagna at WFMU's 1997 Marathon wrap party. Now, the ridiculously talented cartoonist, performer, and warped interpreter of turn-of-the-last-century music and manners returns with a banjo, a friend named Jonny A, and some murder ballads and sea chanteys. We've invited all the ghosts of Appalachia to this one, so tune in!

on
Give the Drummer Some with Doug Schulkind
Give the Drummer Some welcomes back to the airwaves Prince Oliver Trager, author of the newly published -- and 15 years in the making -- "Dig Infinity," a biography of visionary verbalist Lord Buckley. Before Cool (b.c.) there was Lord Buckley: the hemp-headed ex-lumberjack who invoked both the manners of English aristocracy and the street language of Black America; the picaresque pill-popping darling of Al Capone; the jazz philosopher who jammed with Charlie Parker; the stand-up comic who could celebrate Jesus Christ and the Marquis de Sade in the course of a single gig. Tune in for three hours of ultra-rare home recordings and plenty of stories about this neglected American genius that will break your heart and make you wet your pants at the same time.
SubArachnoid Space Monday, October 14th, 2002, 8pm - 11pm
on
Scott Williams's show
Scott's favorite review of SubArachnoid Space says simply this:
"Man, I wish I still did drugs." It's funny cos it's true. Instrumental improvised space-rock from the School of Hawkwind, with a sensibility that denies false noodling, the insatiable aural curiosity of SubArachnoid Space will be on full display this evening.

Sweet-voiced Rebecca Hall has been on WFMU a few times on former DJ Andy Waltzer's program. Her music is beautifully simple, in the vein of Appalachia-style ballads and folk tunes but stir up sentimental feelings. Rebecca's working on a second album with includes spare but lush string arrangements.

HEROES OF THE ALAMO's frenzied guitars and roughhewn hooks simultaneously

DJ Rupture Friday, September 20th, 2002, 2am - 6am
on
Advanced D & D with Donna Summer
Yes, we just couldn't keep him away. He's been on Re:Mixology, and you've certainly heard the hype by now. That's right "the best DJ in the world" (according to the German magazine "De:Bug") sat in with Donna Summer on the wheels of steel a few weeks ago and laid down some awesome, awesome tracks including a handful of originals from his forthcoming albums! He plays some wild stuff, maybe a tad more experimental than his newest CD on Tigerbeat 6, "Minesweeper Suite", but there's certainly no lack of intense breaks seamlessly mixed with everything from R&B to dancehall to Japanese noise! You won't hear this one on CD or anywhere else, so tune in you rabid dogs!
The Pedal Steel Transmission Monday, September 16th, 2002, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
The Pedal Steel Transmission has been performing in the Chicago area for two years. Its blend of unexpected dynamics and distressed ambience has gathered a large local following. The band wears its influences on its chest, from the Velvet Underground to Can, to other more folk inspired artists as Japancakes or John Fahey, but with a vocal style all its own. The underlying current is still rock and roll, but the nature is improvisation. The band frequently performs amidst 8 and 16mm films that add to the group's fractured approach at songwriting.
Soul Junk Friday, September 13th, 2002, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
Check out this amazing session of the utterly brilliant, hiphop/noise-
damaged group Soul Junk! Featuring Glen Galaxy (from the legendary Truman's Water), you will be blown away by his gift for dropping crazed drop-ins, fat beats, sick noise, punk rock and an unashamed love for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Also playing tamborine, toy piano and singing on this session is Daniel Smith of the Danielson Famile! Soul Junk will be playing tunes from past records and from their great new "1957" LP.

The Modey Lemon Friday, September 6th, 2002, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
Pittsburgh PA sends us this powerhouse duo of drums and guitar and moog! This band is so rockin' and so original, you can't believe they get all that sound from just 2 guys! Think of the great power and songwriting of the Volcano Suns, early Urge Overkill, and Golden Earring. Now think of ALL THAT coming from just 2 fellas! DAMN! Their new album is coming out on In The Red Records this fall!
Joseph Suchy, Wolfgang Brauneis, Georg Odijk and Hrvatski Friday, September 6th, 2002, 2am - 6am
on
Advanced D & D with Donna Summer
Joseph Suchy just released a new solo record on the Entenpfuhl label and has
also released recordings on Grob, Tonschacht, and Whatness, in addition to
touring with Mouse On Mars, playing on Burnt Friedmann records, etc. but none
of this takes away from what a fine guitarist he is. Wolfgang Brauneis and
Georg Odijk DJ as the A-Musik Soundsystem. Georg runs the A-musik label;
Wolfgang runs the Tonschacht label. Together they run the A-Musik shop,
proclaimed as "the best record store in the world" by many. They mix
everything from pricey double-digit number art records to noise-tom-foolery,
but artfully done, as only two insanely obsessed collectors of out-sound can.
I have no idea what Hrvatski will do besides lob out the occasional obscure
remark.
Kevin Blechdom plus Goodiepal Friday, August 30th, 2002, 2am - 6am
on
Advanced D & D with Donna Summer
One half of the notorious Blechdom from Blechdom, Kevin Blechdom will
create antics from her new Tigerbeat6 album "I Heart Presets." Simon
Reynolds says: "Imagine some three-way collision of Tori Amos, the Frogs, and Stephen Merritt, operating with a studio outlay restricted to under $100. "
Donna Summer saw Goodiepal play last year, and he says it was easily one of the strangest shows he's ever seen; a combination of frantic energy, Nokia radio commercials, madrigals played on the recorder, digital noise and a Prince Valiant haircut. Goodiepal will be supporting his latest
album "Mainpal Action" on ski-pp.
Zod Tour Friday, August 30th, 2002, 2am - 6am
on
Advanced D & D with Donna Summer
I don't know what Zod means either, but I do know this Milwaukee record label
rules the earth like cruel mastodons! That's right - bratty kids with names
like Emotional Joystick, Curtis Chip, Soplerfo and Destro invade the WFMU
studios and thereby conquer the Advanced D&D program in the name of Zod. So
what do they sound like? Zod has, in 12 records, redefined the sound of
experimental noise, sometime pushing the limits of emotional speed-noise
(think Philip Glass backed by 250 BPM drum-machines) and other times they are
pretty and sweet and have lots of crackling and bleeping noises. Who knows
what they are doing? We'll find out on very early on Friday morning what
their barbarous plans will be!
All times listed are Jersey City time, EST.
