Chandeliers Tuesday, October 14th, 2008, 9am - Noon
on
Talk's Cheap with Jason Sigal
Chandeliers drink the same Chicagoland water that hydrates fellow hyperrhythmic abstract electronic pop groups like Mahjongg and Lazer Crystal. This water turns the vibraphone of late-90s Chicago post-rock into a synth, and adds a phat trigger to every drum. Chandeliers' debut album The Thrush was recently released on Pickled Egg (UK), and on the group's own Obey Your Brain imprint (co-run by Griffin of Icy Demons, also home to Man Man and Need New Body). Tune in to hear Chandeliers refract light in the WFMU live room like a warped disco ball.
Michael Chapman
Monday, October 13th, 2008, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
As a contemporary of Nick Drake, John Martyn and Roy Harper, guitarist Michael Chapman first emerged on the folk-music circuits of Cornwall, moving on to the fabled London scene. Blending elements of folk, jazz and classical styles, he created his own unique catalog of challenging, often autobiographical original compositions and established a formidable reputation as an intense live performer and musical innovator. Michael Chapman is about to release a new album and drops by Irene's show on WFMU.
JACK Quartet plays Xenakis Sunday, October 12th, 2008, 10pm - Midnight
on
Stochastic Hit Parade / A440 with Bethany Ryker
For the first time since the show began, the Stochastic Hit Parade
features a live performance of Xenakis' stochastic music. What's that you say? By definition, a stochastic process is one that is unprovable by theory....random, in other words. Xenakis  (an architect, composer and all-around genius-type) used computer algorithms, game theory and algebra to generate random sequences of notes. The JACK string quartet comes to WFMU's studio to perform all four of Xenakis' string quartets, including St/4-1,080262, one of Xenakis' emblematic stochastic works.
Steven R. Smith
Sunday, October 12th, 2008, Midnight - 3am
on
Daniel Blumin's show
Tune in for a session recorded by instrument builder and musician Steven R. Smith at his Worstward Studios in L.A. Smith, a member of the fabled West Coast Jewelled Antler collective and bands such as Thuja, Mirza, Ulaan Khol & Hala Strana, rarely performs live in a solo setting, so do not miss this treat recorded especially for WFMU. Once described as Blixa Bargeld covering Swell Maps instrumentals, Smith traverses the worlds of folk, improvisation, psych and drone, and this first visit to WFMU finds Smith on a sparse lo-fi cosmic journey into the big night sky. Check it out & look for the second Ulaan Khol album to be released on Soft Abuse in December.

Local indie-rock guys Takka Takka come by to play a set of tunes from their latest album, Migration. They've ditched the rootsy Lou Reed stylings of their debut for a burbling understatement of interlocking guitars, ethereal synths, and overlapping rhythms, casually informed by Philip Glass, Balinese gamelan, and Afropop. The perfect soundtrack to declining temperatures.

Steven Stapleton / Nurse With Wound
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
In 1979 Nurse With Wound entered a UK recording studio with no musical training whatsoever and created an album called Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella, which promptly was awarded a rating of five question marks from Sounds Magazine. Since then, NWW has confounded critics and listeners alike, both pioneering and mining the areas of improvisation, Krautrock-influence, electroacoustic experiments and more with unparalleled sense of invention and quite often humor. The shifting group's enduring central figure, Steven Stapleton, gives Brian a rare radio interview via phone today from his Irish goat farm, talking about NWW past, present and future. We'll also be playing choice cuts from Stapelton's 40+ album discography.

history. Today, join Brian as he broadcasts the duo's June 22nd performance from NYC's Knitting Factory and say so long to Charlie and the Girls.
Matt Wolf, Director of Arthur Russell documentary "Wild Combination" Monday, September 22nd, 2008, 8pm - 11pm
on
Sound and Safe with Trent
Experimental film director Matt Wolf originally wanted to make an
expressionistic account of Arthur Russell's life and music, but then
he met Russell's parents and boyfriend and a new scope emerged. While there's still a lot of art in the film, like Wolf running through cornfields with a VHS camera in Russell's native Iowa, Wild Combination is very much a historical document. Phillilp Glass, Allen Ginsberg, Russell's parents, and onetime AR boyfriend Tom Lee (among others) take time in front of the camera to shed light on a brilliant musician who combined and altered the courses of dance and avant-garde music in New York in the 70's and 80's. Matt will talk about and play clips from Wild Combination, which will run beginning Friday 9/26 at the IFC Center in New York and the ICA in London - check the website for screenings in other cities.

Crom
Tuesday, September 16th, 2008, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
The grindcore kings of Los Angeles take time out from obsessing over Glenn Danzig's house to book a bonafide East Coast tour and stop by Brian's show. For the uninitiated, this band gets a heavy goofus tag for all their Arctic-warrior, sword-wielding, cocaine-sniffing album artwork, ridiculous lowbrow culture samples and, well, generally limited attention span. But when they crank and get things going they create some of the most chaotic,
freeform metal out there. Epic, furious blasts of the heavy and classic vein today from a bunch of guys who are true students of all forms of metal.

on
Put The Needle On The Record with Billy Jam
Ever since the video for his first single, "The Devil Made Me Do It," was banned by MTV Bay Area hip-hop artist Paris has been stirring up controversy. The lyrics for his nineties track "Bush Killa" which suggested taking a hit on then president Bush Senior resulted in him getting dropped by his label, the Warner distributed Tommy Boy Records. Since then Paris has stayed true to his confrontational truth telling lyrical ways. Five years ago he caused more controversy with his album Sonic Jihad which strongly suggested that 9/11 was an inside job. His soon-to-drop new album, "Acid Reflex," whose release will deliberately coincide
with the upcoming presidential election is packed with more of his
no-holds-barred political beliefs. The artist, fresh back from an
Australian tour, will talk via phone with Billy Jam.
