The Pink Puffers brass band regularly fills the streets, squares and historical sites of Rome with their buoyant brand of funk, soul, jazz and New Orleans inspired originals and covers, not to mention the occasional Italian 70s film soundtrack. The youthful Italians hit our shores earlier this month at the invitation of the annual Boston-area HONK Festival of activist street bands. HONK festival bands are known for their Vaudevillian antics - stilt walking, juggling etc. - and outrageous costumes. The Pink Puffer's own trademark bright pink outfits are more carnivalesque than "haunted house" - but their Vespa-throttling volume is definitely not for the timid. The thirteen Puffers squeeze into FMU Studio B for a blood-curdling live session.

Brooklyn's Slasher Risk combine so many elements close to the heart of the Castle: basement/practice-space noise; the sonic echoes of everything from Albrecht D, to The Velvet Underground, Total and Whitehouse; all this, and an overpowering live show. Basically one man, one woman, one or two guitars, sometimes a drum kit, some screaming, some effect boxes, and anything goes. In the songs, Stefan transposes the rings of hell from Dante's Inferno to modern America, and describes contemporary life in Portland, Oregon in terms of the long process of atonement for sins in Purgatory. Katie is now an academic, author, and violinist for indie psyche-pop band The Special Pillow. But her bountiful vintage indie rock 7" collection was gathered primarily during her youthful years in the indie-rock label biz and at the great college freeform station WCBN (from whence, not too coincidentally, Rob also sprouted). Rob will again unsuccessfully attempt to find a way to smoothly segue Katie's rocking oldies with vintage global 45s.

As the legions of dealers busily set up all around them at the Metropolitan Pavilion on Friday afternoon for this year's WFMU Record Fair, Billy Jam and his numerous guests will be broadcasting live from the Manhattan venue in a non-stop hip-hop open mic session. In addition to Maryland turntablist DJ ALF laying down beats and cuts, and visiting San Francisco "scratch guitar" pioneer The Genie freestyling on his instrument, there will be numerous emcees (many in town for the CMJ music conference) stopping by including D. Black, the Blue Scholars, Tame-One, Shafiq Husayn, Bilal, Vic D, and Jahdan. Also stopping by will be West Coast esoteric hip-hop production duo PANTyRAiD, and more guests TBA. Their sophomore effort, "Arrow," was conceived by Clare in their kitchen, and arranged by Olivier with their two cats nearby nodding in approval. This week, The Brother Lucy Show welcomes sound artist Daniel Neumann, curator of the "10ms - Perspectives on Microsound" festival at Diapason in Brooklyn. For the month of October, Diapason is presenting performances and installations of sound based on time scales "shorter than musical notes," a style that overlaps with glitch, lowercase and onkyo styles across the globe. The festival concludes with a Microsound Dance Party at Santos Party House.

NY-based Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man is usually a performer, not a curator. But she was enlisted by the folks at Carnegie Hall to travel far and wide in China to seek out village musical traditions - and bring some of the performers to NYC as part of Carnegie's wide-ranging Ancient Paths, Modern Voices Festival of Chinese music and performing arts. The festival starts this weekend and features concerts and other events at Carnegie and other venues, including some free concerts. For the first time ever New Yorkers will hear the compelling women's vocal music of the Dong ethnic minority (from remote Southwestern China near the Burmese border), as well as an ebullient Daoist village ensemble from the north near Mongolia, and much more regional Chinese traditional music and performing arts rarely (if ever) seen in the US. Wu Man will be participating in the festival as well, but never one to slack off, she's currently in California with the Kronos Quartet rehearsing her next project (which will also hit Carnegie, November 3). She takes a rehearsal break to join us by phone and talk about some of the artists she's bringing over.

Additionally this premier episode in the new WFMU season's lineup will feature an interview with director Jamie Jay Johnson whose 2009 documentary "Sounds Like Teen Spirit" takes an affectionate yet comic look at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, and Nick Abrahams - the co-director of "The Posters Came From The Walls" about diehard fans of Depeche Mode around the world, both of which screened at the recent Branchage Film Festival in "old" Jersey where these interviews were conducted. Also in the studio on Friday will be Belinda and Hova - hosts of legendary former WFMU program "Greasy Kid Stuff" who are back visiting the East Coast this weekend for a WFMU benefit Greasy Kid Stuff Dance Party at Maxwell's in Hoboken.

Then, just minutes before an attempted rebroadcast on Sept. 27, Thor tossed a celestial fistful of lightning bolts at the WFMU Building, knocking out the power for hours. collaboration between Indoor Life vocalist Jorge Socarras and legendary disco artist and producer Patrick Cowley. The album was recorded between 1976 and 1979 but never saw the light of day due to initial delays and Cowley's untimely death in 1982. Those familiar with Cowley's work with Sylvester and Donna Summer will be in for a surprise! The tracks run the gamut from minimal synth haunts and pre-technoid dream action to catchy weird wave and glammy power pop, yet somehow it all makes sense and "Catholic" is an essential album that never was! She's Malian by birth and often sings in her native Bamanan, but with a diplomat dad, Traore grew up around the world, and she has based her career in France. She has incorporated traditional Malian music into her sound but she would not call herself a traditional musician. Her lyrics often support women's rights and other socially progressive themes. Her latest CD, the sparse, intimate "Tchamantché" (Nonesuch) takes a step further away from her West African roots - but still does not abandon them completlely. Rokia joins us to talk about the new CD and other musical adventures.

Noise Nomads is soul survivor Jeff Hartford improvising vocal mayhem through a contact mic and hints of rock god excess on a Tyco toy guitar buried under squalls of white noise. The two bands have a new split 7" on Spooky Tree records.

NYC's very own extra special Menya, the sexy, hip hop trio of NYU undergrads, whose album "The Sleepover Series Volume One" will find its way into the world on October 2, work up a dangerous sweat at DJ Keili's second slumber party. Come hear the noise that's making parents blush all over the Metropolitan region as Menya brings the Jolt Cola and Devil Dogs that every slumber party needs on Beastin the Airwaves with Keili at 11pm on September 21.
Then at 10 o'clock, Swedish two-piece Wildbirds & Peacedrums rock the studio with stripped-down Kate Bush-ian tribal vocals and bold, bare drums tinged with splashes of production that will make your face tingle. Their new album "The Snake" is out now on The Control Group, and they're playing around New York from the 15th through the 22nd, including an opening spot with Deerhoof.

While everyone is having fun on the WFMU Booze Cruise, this radio host has to work! So he's decided to bring his show onboard to lead an oceanic expedition to the tropics! The program will feature a solid two hours of the finest exotica this side of Waikiki, Hong Kong and Nairobi, with the centerpiece being a live performance by the Waitiki 7. Hailing from both mainland coasts and Hawaii, this septet carries on the Polynesian pop tradition of Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman, down to the expertly human-sung bird calls. If Thor Heyerdahl had a band like this on the Kon-Tiki, he never would have gone ashore!
Performing live (in approximately this order): Clay Ross and Matuto's visionary explorations of Brazilian musical forms; New York's premier Haitian rara group Djarara (who are profiled in the new documentary film "The Other Side of the Water); Happyfunsmile, NYC's first and foremost Japan / Okinawa roots band; and guitarist Smokey Hormel's latest project Smokey's Secret Family, who revisit entrancing old-school Congolese guitar styles.

The Evan "Funk" Davies Show
What happens when you try to cram a 30-piece self-described "circus punk marching band" into the modestly-sized WFMU Love Room? Find out Tuesday night, Sept 15, when Chicago's Mucca Pazza attempt to play live on the Evan "Funk" Davies Show. Traditional band instruments are augmented by electric guitars and accordions, which are played through head-mounted amplifiers. Their music will remind you more of Seuss than Sousa; they've also been known to cover Serge Gainesbourg, Le Tigre, Ali Hassan Kuban, the Bar-Kays and others. They're playing at the Knitting Factory on Saturday the 12th, and at Mercury Lounge on Sunday the 13th, so you can see the full spectacle first and then hear how it translates to radio.

Tagging along for the fun will be the king of Boggle himself, The King AdRock, Adam Horowitz of the world-altering Beastie Boys and BS 2000.
Listen as the studio walls buckle under the pressure to contain so much sheer talent and the floor shakes with the realization that these superstars are still relatable people who can make time to have a fun chat on freeform radio without having to promote any product.
