Banda de los Muertos - the lost Barbès tapes
Saturday, April 30th, 2011, 6pm - 9pm
on
Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg
Well, not really lost... it's just that technology failed us during the first hour of our remote broadcast from Barbès in Park Slope on March 26 - so Banda de los Muertos's scorching set didn't make it to the airwaves. But we'll right that wrong by airing their set this evening. Banda de los Muertos, by the way, is a stellar unit of NY jazz, experimental and multi-culti musicians playing the bombastic yet sublime brass band music of Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico - the first band in New York to take on this great tradition. And they hit the Brooklyn circuit again soon - for a big Cinco de Mayo show with Chicha Libre at Littlefield in Gowanus - plus another Barbès show on Saturday May 7.
Tyler John Tyler are a Chicago trio featuring former members of the Ponys and Daily Void that play a lean brand of rock that brings to mind the Modern Lovers fronted by Poly Styrene (rest in peace)! They have a new LP on Slow Fizz records.
It's a double dose of greatness this Saturday, so get ready to be rocked two times by Shannon & the Clams and Tyler John Tyler!

Dominic Lash & Nate Wooley
Friday, April 29th, 2011, 9am - Noon
on
The Long Rally with Scott McDowell
When Scott found out Oxford, UK double bassist Dominic Lash is currently living and playing in the States, he knew he had to ask him down to WFMU. Scott admires his holistic approach to free improvisation, utilizing (and expanding upon) the full language of his instrument: violent plucking or tapping of the strings, dense resonant bowing, rhythmic thumping or tapping the bass's wood, etc. Dom is adept at a range of styles (minimalism, lowercase music, Derek Bailey-esque free improv, jazz) and sometimes even uses them in all in the same passage, yet he plays with a sense of humor, sensitivity and spontaneous intensity that is worth witnessing. Dom brought along trumpet alchemist, improv expert, and WFMU pal Nate Wooley to spar and chatter with. Should be a doozy.

Moon Unit
Tuesday, April 26th, 2011, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
One of the best bug-out psych ensembles to hail from Scotland in some time, Glasgow's Moon Unit's debut LP "Hell Horse" on the Blackest Rainbow imprint rained some serious sci-fi shred over the WFMU airwaves this past winter. Influenced by the frozen-space zones of UK combos like the Vibracathedral Orchestra and some of the best 90's skree from Japan's PSF label, Moon Unit lock into focus as often as they drift into netherworlds and foggy deconstructions where space and time collapse. Awesome sounds today. The band will be playing live in NYC April 10th at Death By Audio in Brooklyn as well.
Elks Tuesday, April 26th, 2011, 6am - 9am
on
Marty McSorley's show
Brooklyn power sludge outfit Elks stampede into the WFMU studios with a huge heavy sound reminiscent of KARP and Godheadsilo. Tune in, turn it up, wake up the neighbors and party.

Longtime co-conspirators Edward Haber and Kenny Kosek drop by to pay tribute to the Citizen on Irene's show.

Bare Wires Saturday, April 23rd, 2011, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
The Cherry Blossom Clinic is honored to welcome back Bare Wires to the WFMU airwaves! Imagine if Yardbirds/Hollies songwriter Graham Gouldman joined the Flamin' Groovies instead of 10cc---the resultant band would sound something Oakland's Bare Wires, who mix punk temperament with the British Invasion's fondness for hooks and sonic scope. Having first appeared on the Evan "Funk" Davies show last year, Bare Wires return on their new tour with brand new songs! Check out the rest of their N. American tour this month (see their myspace page for tour dates) and be on the lookout for their forthcoming album "Cheap Perfume," due out later this year.

Castevet Friday, April 22nd, 2011, Midnight - 3am
on
Wm. Berger presents My Castle of Quiet
New York's Castevet create introspective, complex black metal, with gutsiness fully intact -- that is to say, they're neither as oppressively brainy as Deathspell Omega, nor as lunkheaded as Carpathian Forest, and with force aplenty. Their debut full length on Profound Lore, Mounds of Ash, is a loaded document, with one great song after another. Castevet's songs take you through their considerable chops as a band, with that extra touch which comes only when the musicians can really manage their instruments with expertise. Death/grind heads will make the blanket statement that all black metal is overtly simplistic, but you'd be hard-pressed to make that accusation with Castevet. Without question, the songs on Mounds of Ash are grimy, riff-laden and monstrous, making Castevet somehow "pro" and "dirty" at the same time. What more could one ask of their black metal? As with the overwhelming percentage of My Castle of Quiet guests, Castevet have also opted to play absolutely live and in the moment, no pre-recording, do-overs or alt-takes. Don't miss a night of groundbreaking, modern black metal, as MCoQ continues its trend of bringing great local underground metal to the airwaves.

Travis Just: "Innova"
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011, Noon - 3pm
on
Miniature Minotaurs with Kurt Gottschalk
Composer Travis Just of Object Collection presents a live excerpt of his three-hour modern opera Innova. With five vocalists, electric guitar, percussion and electronics, Innova is a raucous piece of Robert Wilson inspired nightmarish futurism. The story is set "within an urban grotto that evokes a cosmopolitan
vision of productive decay and resonantly colliding languages," according to the producers. Tune in as they remake WFMU's Love Room into their own frightful grotto, and then catch the full production May 13-22 at Manhattan's Abrons Arts Center.
Blank Realm + Slug Guts
Tuesday, April 19th, 2011, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
Two excellent exports from sunny Brisbane, Australia visiting Brian's show today. Up first, Blank Realm who create a levitating atmosphere built on improvisations that focus sharp into excellent, tuneful songs reminiscent of a grimier early Pere Ubu. Following up are fellow locals Slug Guts, who wage serious sax-inflicted junkyard reverb chaos with the spirit of Rowland S. Howard hovering close above. They recently did a split single with the Primitive Calculators and a full LP called "Howlin' Gang" on Sacred Bones records and are a stomping, Stooged-out, snarling sextet in the live forum. Hear both bands live today after they cris-cross the USA on their first ever tour.
Still Saffire Sunday, April 17th, 2011, 6am - 9am
on

Keili can't say it better than Karla, Director of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls: "Still Saffire is not just one of the most talented 'kid bands' around right now, they're quite simply one of the most exciting and interesting bands of any age. Their songs are pop gems, with some that will move you to tears, and some that will have you humming for weeks afterwards, all performed with a combination of natural stage presence and a lack of pretentiousness that should be the envy of bands twice (and three times) their age." Listen to them live, Sunday, April 17th, 6-9AM on Beastin' The Airwaves! with Keili.
Elikeh
Saturday, April 16th, 2011, 6pm - 9pm

The album and live set is a nod to the classic Minutemen song approach, written on D. Boon's Telecaster itself: 30 short blasts of songs strung together as a whole reflect on Watt's past, present and future and are also based on individual characters from Hieronymus Bosch paintings. Watt's Missingmen trio assemble on Brian's show today and feature Tom Watson on guitar and Raul Morales on drums, they're going to perform the album in its entirety live in the WFMU studios!

Formed in 1976, the group immediately staked its place as one of Britain's most celebrated exports of art-punk whose first three records (Pink Flag, 154, and Chairs Missing) are universally regarded as picture-perfect documents of innovative experimentation in songcraft. Traversing the lines between raw minimalist punk and complex experimentations, they've influenced everyone from Minor Threat to Guided By Voices, the Minutemen to the Futureheads, and continue to create new soundways with their latest release Red Barked Tree. Wire's 30 plus years have been marked by constant flux, side projects, regrouping and reinvention, and the 2011 lineup of Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, Robert Grey and Matt Simms play live on WFMU while in town for two shows: Music Hall of Williamsburg (April 5) and the Bowery Ballroom (April 6th). Long Distance Poison Friday, March 25th, 2011, Midnight - 3am
on
Wm. Berger presents My Castle of Quiet
Long Distance Poison present an irresistible concoction of convergent psychedelic and electronic energies, everything from a love of nature and Rothko-like visual aesthetics, to musical influences like Sky Records, John Carpenter soundtracks, and a less-jittery Mother Mallard or post-Phaedra Tangerine Dream. They've released some excellent tapes, on Life Like and Cryptic Carousel, releases that capitalize on the band's strength in long-form electronic composition with a wealth of improvisational wiggle-room. (Yet more can be heard at the band's soundcloud page.) There's a "ground" concept for each piece, but that merely serves as a taking-off point for LDP's pulsating extrapolations, typically about 30 minutes in length, or longer. They've been wowing local Brooklyn audiences for some time now, and part of the fun of their shows is the opportunity to experience the band finding their way in the moment, watching the clay of their ideas take on form and urgency. Long Distance Poison now bring their live power to My Castle of Quiet in a performance that's not to be missed; a collaboration of sorts with Castle host Wm. Berger, their live set will be a score to an imagined film by Wm., a Nordic romance entitled Sisu.

Over the course of that trip and subsequent tours, the three developed an improvised musical brotherhood tinted by shared emotional colorings. Matthews wields laptop synthesizer and manipulated field recordings, while Radding and Drury create the backbone on bass and percussion respectively. They play live on Irene's WFMU program.

Mike Hunchback is a well-known local celebrant of all things "low culture" -- early comics, punk rock and the kind of films Mr. Henenlotter makes. Together, they join Wm. for a discussion of Frank's latest film, a documentary on Herschell Gordon Lewis, another legendary American schlockmeister, known as the Godfather of Gore and creator of the so-called "splatter film." Frank's doc on Lewis screens in early March at Anthology Film Archives in NYC, along with the Lewis classics Blood Feast, Something Weird and Scum of the Earth. The fun begins promptly at midnight.
All times listed are Jersey City time, EDT.
