I love this track - they did this live on the Tonight Show in 67.
Avatar 6:38pm
cometothesunshine:

I wish this original mix of Last Night had been reissued on a CD - I have bought dozens of 45s to get a good sounding transfer.
  6:39pm
Matt:

did they have a flautist with them on the Tonight Show?
Avatar 6:40pm
cometothesunshine:

They just did it acoustic - all live, Matt.
Avatar 6:41pm
cometothesunshine:

That is how they felt most comfortable. And when I wanted a band to back them on the tour I produced, we fought.
Avatar 6:41pm

But, after the tour, they hired the band and we worked on another tour.

This is a new transfer off of my disc I made for this show.
Avatar 6:55pm
zivilars:

I'm dumb so I have to take the chance to ask an expert: What's the best rule when it comes to mono vs stereo? Everything which was originally recorded in mono = hands off from stereo mixes? or is it more complicated and a comparison advisable for every record, meaning that stereo mixes can be an improvement nevertheless? (sorry for bad English, no native speaker)

if anyone needs me, I will be checking Craigslist for harpsichords!! :)

You’ve knocked it out of the park, Andrew. Jason and I are listening and chatting as it plays.❤️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
Matt Clarke:

@Richard Whig: You gonna throw it through a fuzz?
Avatar 6:57pm
cometothesunshine:

zivilars - the situation is that often they made two totally separate mixes for mono and stereo and if you love the music, you gotta hear them both.
Avatar 6:58pm
cometothesunshine:

I love the major/minor fade of this one.
Avatar 6:59pm
cometothesunshine:

But, it is condensed today!
Avatar 7:01pm
zivilars:

I see – thanks for the info. Wasn't really aware that separate mono / stereo mixes were already made at the time of the recording (not only mono), but in this case, it makes sense to hear them both, of course. Thanks!

@matt......hmmmmmm...

Avatar 7:11pm
zivilars:

@Andrew: That's great – my knowledge when it comes to "technical" things like the definite mono/stereo mix is embarrassingly low, as you can see, but I love the music and as much as I like a lot of WFMU shows, yours is the best one to discover a single artist more deeply ... Thanks for that!
Avatar 7:12pm
cometothesunshine:

zivilars - these things are less important than a great song. But they can make a great song greater.
Avatar 7:13pm

That's awesome that Chad produced a Judith Durham song! She sounds as great on it as on Seekers songs.

Chad says he was happy when they graduated in media from "schlock rock" to "art rock." I loved their whole period. I never considered any of it schlock.

Avatar 7:56pm

Everyone has heard all of the package tours of the 60's and C&J made an effort to break with those and created their own tour of artists that took place in late 66 where they emceed the entire concert of stars that that made for a real memorable experience.

What a horrible end to the year. First Chad Stuart and then Gerry Marsden. R.I.P.

I've heard these guys ever since I was a kid in the 90s and I feel real bad. Can't imagine what people who listened to them since way back in the 60s feel.
