Mono tape destroyed in the 1970's, stereo + multis burned in UMG fire.

:(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Beantown Doug:

By the time I was making my living by spinning records at an AM radio station, the mono side of singles were like the back cover of MAD Magazine -- a fold-in.
Avatar 7:19pm
cometothesunshine:

yeah, these are true mono mixes, taken from my LP.

Avatar 7:23pm
sw2442:

Why ABC Records threw out those Dunhill mono tapes in the early 70's along with The Mamas and The Papas and other artists and groups still puzzles me personally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Beantown Doug:

The button that Phil Spector wore on his Santa Claus costume, on the Apple reissue of his Christmas Album, was the first time I saw "Back to Mono." Spector was allegedly given the button by a hi-fi guy who had started an anti-stereo campaign.
Avatar 7:24pm
cometothesunshine:

Michael Cuscuna thought no one would want anything other than stereo.
Avatar 7:25pm

If a track was only available in mono, he kept the mono tape, otherwise in the bin.

P.F. Sloan was the one-man Fifth Dimension on this demo, which that group followed to the letter, other than seemingly shifting the key up.
Avatar 7:28pm

Gaylord - I believe they hoped the Mamas & Papas would do this. Lou Adler thought otherwise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm

I've said this before...I'll never understand the short sightedness of some record labels and those in charge.

Andrew, of course —and, after all, early 5D were essentially a Mamas & Papas soundalike group.
Avatar 7:31pm

Well, I tried for like 18 years to make it happen, but the companies felt the market wasn't there.
