Playing a previously unreleased (by me, anyway) LIVE DEVO tape that I recorded on a reel to reel, from a board feed on August 2nd, 1977 @ the Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco. Probably in the second hour...

And what was the name of that band that Sheena spun after Otis' nude, lewd, rude show? Why, the Titty Twisters Orchestra, of course.

Hello Kitten and pals, tuned in, sitting at the bottom of the vortex. Lots of light down here to work by thankfully. Oh what's that in the darkness, it's

Whoa!!?? What!? DEVO off the board, to open reel in '77. I think I need to hear that.

for the longest time - anytime I'd see references to it online - I assumed that Tom Dissevelt and Kid Baltan thing was relatively modern. The name Kid Baltan sounds like someone's hip DJ name or something. I had no idea it was an Ur-Electronic thing.
Avatar 3:50pm

I know huh, like the music... the name sounds modern, like Tom and Kid on Warp records.

yeah, those cats were pioneers, goin back to the '60s. Perhaps the 'Kid' name was a reference to westerns. they were big in them days.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm

I remember seeing a feature on DEVO on some PBS show, were they were reporting on them like they were some kind of worrisome trend in music (perhaps tongue-in-cheek) and they actually scared the crap out of me, they were so strange. A year or two later, I was obsessed by them, esp. after their SNL performance.

Yeah, Aitch, there exists master tapes which had all of Eno's contributions. He played and sang all over it, and in mixing sessions, Jerry and Mark just politely faded his tracks down. You really don't hear too much of Eno on the final mix, but he's there.

Rich, one time I was at a church youth group event and we found out Devo was playing nearby and my friends wanted to go. I was afraid of going to hell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm

But Mark and Jerry have variously stated over the years that the tapes exist and both tease the possibility of releasing it as an album.
Avatar 5:01pm

in one hour, i mean, not now. But just a reminder that we have a new show following this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm

Never really thought of it, but this DEVO material bears so much similarity to Taking Tiger Mtn and Warm Jets
Avatar 5:02pm
Carmichael:

I saw them in '82, and they used the treadmills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm
Rich in Washington:

My maybe second rock concert ever was DEVO, and I remember getting into fights in school because I liked DEVO. When standing in line for the show, outside PDX's Paramount, I remember dudes driving by in Camaros and pickups yelling shit at us "DEVO ARE FAGGOTS! GO SEE VAN HALEN!"
  5:03pm
novakscene:

I was very flipped by DEVO's video for Whip it! I was probably around 11 and it was one of the most perverse things I'd ever seen. A few years later a tape I got from a fellow boy scout with Devo and B-52s convinced me that I, too, wanted to be perverse and I quit the scouts. The scout leader was an octogenarian fascist anyway.
